A black hole just has the same gravity as whatever sun created it. It doesn't suck any harder, it's just gravity you could orbit around like any other star or body. If our own sun became a black hole, other than everything getting dark it wouldn't change much else. Orbits would all be the same because the gravity/mass didn't change. If you can build a facility in orbit of a planet or sun, you can just as easily put one in orbit of a black hole.

This is a good point, though to exploit black holes to gain some exotic resource in the way they describe, I'd assume they need to get near the event horizon.
The use of the word "encompass" also implies these facilities wrap around the entire black hole, and afaik SW doesn't even have megastructures that surround normal stars like that.

#AskEck I've had the idea for a little while now that Lucasfilm should pursue adapting George Lucas's sequel treatments in comic form and getting Lucas himself to consult on it. This may sound like an out-there idea but Lucas was clearly unhappy that the story of his sequels was never told, he's had a life long love of comic books as a medium and even though he's retired, he's always been happy to consult on projects whenever Lucasfilm have asked him to (Solo, The Mandalorian, Dial of Destiny, etc). For Lucasfilm's part, they're fine with producing non canonical content like Visions and the rumored 'What if?' series. Marvel Comics has also just announced they'll be publishing 'What if?' Alien comics and Dark Horse recently published a comic adaption of one of James Cameron's old drafts for an Avatar sequel, so I don't see why Lucasfilm can't get either company to give Star Wars the same treatment. It could even be nice way to celebrate the upcoming 10 year anniversary of the beginning of the sequel trilogy, taking a look at what it could have been. So, what are your thoughts on this? Do you think it's an idea Lucasfilm should pursue?

One of the things that ran through my mind in the late 2000s involved the idea of the Dyson Sphere (think a specific episode of Star Trek). This one piece of techs biggest obstacle is material as well as energy as it would require so much of both to build and utilize. My thinking revolved around "if there was a way to manipulate, gradually slow, and pull material and energy FROM a Black Hole it could be potentially the perfect construction yard. If Star Wars expanded on some of the other tech mentioned in the early part of the video or perhaps using a group of Jedi/Sith or maybe interdictor cruisers to Jumpstart the process, it might actually be viable to go that route in the SW universe. Just a thought. (Hey, Star Wars has seen crazier and already proved moving stars and Black Holes is possible)

A lot of the stuff that happens in typical sci-fi (like robot/AI rebellions and relativity) are explained away by the banality of the tech. For example, droids are so ubiquitous that they fade into the background and are routinely treated as appliances. These droids are carefully programmed to appreciate organics, have regular memory swipes and programming updates, and often even have restraining bolts. All of this is a complex system to repress the droids so they don’t take over. But this system is so ancient that everyone forgets about it. Maybe they use the magic space-time particles to routinely avoid the effects of relativity, like time travel is outlawed so they manipulate spacetime with the particles so that a ship going through “sublight” which is clearly actually relativistic speeds experience the flow of time the same as people on planets. We see this in the Mandalorian story arc where he shuttles the frog lady in sublight from one star system to another in a matter of days, when that’s got to be at least a couple of light years apart. They
also have standard gravity in every situation, like even in Empire when they're inside they space slug in that asteroid or when they go to small
moons, so maybe all shoes for space-farers are made with a gravity corrector in them. Maybe this tech is so ubiquitous that people just take it completely for granted…

Sorry for this being a long winded post. But I think you may find this fascinating in light of the topic of this video.
This is how our real world science and math understand black holes and traveling at, near, or faster than light speed.
Traveling at near the light speed. As you approach light speed, your time slows down while everyone else’s time moves at their same speed.. You are moving forward in time relative to those you left behind.
Traveling at light speed. It requires near infinite energy to reach light speed. This is the galactic speed limit as we know it.
Traveling faster than light speed. This is the exact opposite of traveling slower than light speed. This where things begin to get really weird, but this is what the math predicts.
Instead of light speed being the top speed limit, light speed is now the minimum speed limit. You cannot slow yourself down to light speed because it requires near infinite energy.
Even stranger things happen to time. You are now moving backwards in time relative to those you left behind.
When you make a FTL trip, you briefly move forward in time as you speed up. And then you briefly move backwards in time as travel FTL, which negates your having moved forward in time as you accelerate and decelerate from light speed.
So traveling halfway across the galaxy at FTL speeds is not all that different from traveling across town in your car, at least as far as time for those you left behind is concerned.
The real world problem that we face is that upper/lower speed limitation known as light speed. Another name for this limit is an event horizon.

Black holes are awesome I hope they are space hazards in Star Wars outlaws they are underused in Star Wars stories I also wonder if they can trap force ghosts because the force is an energy field, and so are ghosts and no energy can escape a black hole, so would a force sensitives essence be sucked in as well that would be terrifying

  • @MrCode4money

3:36 black holes at least in our universe are generally smaller in mass than the star they formed from. The general misconception about them is that they "suck" everything into them. Yes by definition if you cross the event horizon you're not coming back. However their gravitational influence is no greater than the original star they formed from.
So if for example our Sun were to become a black hole and if you ignored any of the violent events that may occur during its formation then all the planets in our solar system would just continue to orbit the black hole like they did the Sun. It would be a lot colder but they wouldn't be sucked into it.

One thing I'd like to address is your comment on how the Republic doesn't have the technology to communicate with Tatooine, but has the tech to create facilities around black holes and "harvest" them. I think our world is a good example to use. With our level of technology, we can do unbelievable things. We can manipulate individual atoms, send individual protons on light speed collision courses, and even split atoms. We have genetic modification, we can learn so much about other planets and even other star system just by looking at them, our medical technology is incredible. But yet, we can only predict weather about a week in advance, anything beyond that is pure educated guesses. As great as our medicine and practices are, cancer is s till an insurmountable problem. We consider ourselves masters of this world, yet we still run from hurricanes because the wind is too fast. My point is, we are so advanced but there are little things here and there that we can't or haven't mastered. Every now and then I'll come across some problem that exists and I find it funny that even as advanced as we are, we still have certain problems. This was way longer than I thought it would be.

Not much science in this science fiction. 😀
Over the years, I have come to learn, as I am certain others have, that SW is much more fantasy than sci-fi.
And I love it more because of that. I get super excited when SW gets weird! 🤓🤩

In real physics if they wanted a black hole that could absorb a star fighter blaster shot it would need to have a mass similar to the earth

I don't think the scientists on Earth truly have any real understanding of black holes.

Building in orbit around a black hole shouldn't be difficult. We could do it with our technology.
At a given distance from its center, a black hole with, say, 10 solar masses doesn't have a gravitic pull different from any other object - like a star - of the same mass.
And a black hole doesn't blast out the power of a gigantic active fusion reactor in all directions. As a matter of fact, unless the black hole is active, e.g. absorbing matter, it shouldn't radiate any significant amounts of energy at all.
So, building around a black hole will leave you with the question how to replace all that sweet, sweet free energy you could get from building the same facilities around a star of the same mass.
I'm sure there are a few ideas, but they will probably be a little more involved than simple photovoltaic panels or solar-thermal generators.
The question here is how close those - totaly, absolutely, honest guv'ner, canon - "space-time knot factories" are supposed to be to the black hole's event horizon.
I suspect this guide is somewhat vague on this question...

So humans in Star Wars have mastered the power of vacuum energy a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. The technology likely came from a higher species. The Force constantly creates and destroys to maintain balance. Balance is sweetness to the Force. Ladies and Gentlemen, we have just confirmed Star Wars and Halo are in the same universe. I will not be taking questions at this time. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

this is why you shouldnt try to explain how fantasy tech works, no one can.
It just works, and whatever X-factor is at play to make it work simply does.
Just like it will work for us when we advance that far.
Dont be such a downer! XD
