  • When You Shouldn't Increase Stomach Acid// Lot's of videos talk about how to increase stomach acid, but this video shares when NOT to use stomach acid. I discuss the negative effect of using stomach acid HCL, and whether you should use HCL acid when you have stomach acid problems, like ulcers, h. pylori infection, or gastritis.

    I just discovered your channel. I was about to go buy Betaine HCl supplement and I am so glad I watched your video first and now I know not to. Can you please do a video about stomach ulcers and what supplements to take and food to eat/avoid. Can an ulcer be healed naturally?? I am taking DGL, Zinc Carnosine, ginger , mastic gum and I drink cabbage juice. I must admit that these things are helping. I am also eating a very bland keto type diet. I believe I have an ulcer brought on by misuse of ibuprofen when I was young and I believe I have h pylori.

      Hi So Flo, if you have ulcers, I strongly suggest getting tested for H pylori. Your GP should be able to order you an H.pylori breath test. Ulcers are most often caused by this one infection. They can be treated naturally, thought it's a little more involved than the conventional treatment. Your supports are spot on, though. Keep going with what helps! Thank you so much Amanda for this helpful video. I have GERD / Silent Reflux and because I didn’t want to take the H2 blockers or PPIs I started ACV and lemon. Wow! It kept me awake and took me a full day to recover. Plus everything I ate after the ACV and lemon repeated and caused a lot of gas (just fruit, veggies & protein). I was trying the apple cider vinegar then I saw your video and advice for people in my situation not to use apple cider vinegar or HCL, and instead try the aloe vera juice and deglyc. licorice. I immediately got those and last couple of days I have been feeling better. No bloating, or burning. BTW is it OK to use them both together, also I noticed the aloe vera juice I got has little lemon juice in the ingredients. I was very sensitive to lemon before. Does it come without the lemon juice, to be on the safe side, or this is standard for aloe vera juice?. Thanks again.

    Hey Amanda. Thank you very much for the informative video. I’ve been experiencing GERD symptoms for over a year now and it took forever to identify the problem. I constantly experienced sinus issues and many ENT’s could not help me. I was also having tonsillitis a lot. Thinking that was contributing to my sinus problem, I had a tonsillectomy. Soon after the tonsillectomy it was very clear what I was experiencing because my throat did not heal completely do to what I know now to be acid reflux. Ironically my tonsils were blocking the reflux, keeping it toward the back of my throat. So, now my symptoms are so bad my entire mouth constantly feels acidic and now I have foul smelling breathe.
    I’ve seen a gastroenterologist recently. I received two procedures; endoscopy and colonoscopy. My colon was completely fine, but there was acid reflux. Tissue was taken for a biopsy. I’m waiting for results.
    The gastroenterologist prescribed a PPI, which made my reflux worse. I discontinued after four days. I’m now taking slippery elm and DGL. Its getting much better, but the acidic mouth and foul breathe is still wrecking havoc. I am hoping you can assist me further. I will definitely schedule a session.

      I've read it after an interview of Dr. Mark Pimentel, this is an extract that you can find here www.drkarafitzgerald.com/2020/10/01/dr-mark-pimentel-presents-new-perspectives-on-sibo-and-ibs/:
      Dr. Mark Pimentel: We could take it one step further. One step further is that the methanogens, and this was the paper we published on PPIs a number of years ago, if you’re on a PPI you have less methane, because the PPI prevents hydrogen from getting into the gut. Acid hydrogen is also a source for methanogens to produce methane. If you’re on a PPI, you produce less methane. What’s the twist on this? The twist on this is that a lot of practitioners use betaine HCL or apple cider vinegar, a mechanism of treating SIBO. If you have methane SIBO, you’re basically putting gas on the fire. You have to know what kind of SIBO you have before using these acid containing products.
      It is interesting because I suffer from methan SIBO and I will like to understand if this will put gas on fire....
      Alessandro

    • @ConfluenceNutrition
      @ConfluenceNutrition  3 года назад +1

      @@AlessandroMolly thanks so much for clarifying and sharing this excerpt. I have not heard of this particular mechanism before, but I have heard Dr. Pimentel talk about how hydrogen feeds methane producers, so if methane is very high, it often indicates an underlying hydrogen excess. And by this mechanism, supplementing something that increases acid could increase methane SIBO.
      Regarding whether or not to supplement stomach acid...ultimately, focusing on this mechanistic action is a little deep into the weeds. I have heard Dr. Ruscio say before that you want to support secretions like stomach acid AFTER you have treated for SIBO or other infections. This is certainly true for H. pylori infection. On the other hand, these supports sometimes help improve the symptoms and avoid the need for deeper treatment. To help someone decide, I usually suggest a low-and-slow trial with the stomach acid support, and evaluate. If it feels like it improves things, keep going, and if it seems to make things worse, hold off until later. Does that help clarify it for you?

    Thank you for your video. There is so much information out there it can be overwhelming and difficult to find out what is right for you. What if you know from taking a Saliva at home PH test that you are more acidic? I have been taking ACV for my GERD symptoms which include pain in the upper stomach that radiates to the back and other symptoms of possible acid reflux. The ACV does seem to help but not completely eliminate my symptoms. However I do know my stomach is more acidic. If I stop taking ACV how long does it take before you see improvement in symptoms with the Aloe Vera Juice? Thanks!

    • @ConfluenceNutrition
      @ConfluenceNutrition  2 года назад

      Hi Christy, saliva pH and stomach acid are not really related, so acidic saliva doesn't indicate you have too much stomach acid. A better indicator is the baking soda test (1/4 tsp baking soda in 8 oz water first thing in the morning...do you burp shortly?), and also digestive function (do your foods digest fully? does your digestion move at a normal pace...i.e. do you poop daily, 1-3x per day?). It sounds like the gentle approach with ACV helps. You can use both Aloe vera and ACV. Play around with timing and amounts, and see what feels best...take care, and keep me posted!

    I just finished taking antibiotics and PPI for hpylori. I suspect I have stomach ulcers (can feel them hurt when I take ACV) and gerd. My stomach and lower back BURN when I eat. The PPI only lowered my stomach acid further and it's tempting to take ACV just to stop the burning sensation, but I know that will only delay the healing of ulcers. I started taking zinc, slippery elm, DGL licorice, chlorophyll, and mastic gum daily but it's only been a week and no relief yet. Slippery elm works but not effectively. My diet is reduced to cabbage, potatoes, spinach, grapes, and ripe bananas. Everything else inflames my gut. Really don't know what to do now. I don't feel the ulcers unless I take ACV. But the burning is persistent.

    • @ConfluenceNutrition
      @ConfluenceNutrition  3 года назад +1

      Hi, well it sounds like ACV is a definite no, for now. You're on the right track, to work on healing the ulcers. Have you retested to make sure the H. pylori was eradicated with the treatment? I would request that of your doctor. And it can take some time to heal the inner lining. Of all the things you're using, the slippery elm sounds like it's working best, so I might double down on that. Thanks for watching, and I hope you find relief!

    I was diagnosed and put on meds for the H pylori infection 6 months ago. Is it safe to try the betaine tablets now or would I need a round of healing the gut before I do? Thank you for everything you do!

    • @ConfluenceNutrition
      @ConfluenceNutrition  2 года назад +1

      Hi Rahul, did your doctor retest you for H pylori after treatment? It's important to confirm the infection is gone! Again, betaine HCL should not be used wtih a current H pylori infection. As with any supplement, with the aloe, you would test it out to see if it helps. Aloe is helpful before meals, so 1-3 times daily. If so, you can continue for a little while (1-4 weeks), and then stop and see if you maintain your results. If not keep going, if so, you're done!

The reflux wasn't noticeable in the past 2 years but in the last 6 months it got bad and my esophagus started to get ripped. I am also dehydrated easily from it.. All I do is drink 2 cups of liquorice tea which helps but it's taking so long.. I know I need for acv and hcl to remedy the reflux but each time I try it, it just causes the gastritis I've been recovering from to act up.. What other tips can you advise? I don't feel the slippery elm helps me.. Aloe Vera seems to throw my electrolytes off and I get dehydrated.. @ConfluenceNutrition  2 года назад +1

      Yes, in some cases, probiotics can help with acid issues, to the extent that some cases of reflux or acid problems can be due to an imbalance of good and bad bacteria creating gas pressure that affects or triggers reflux. And again, with H pylori, in some cases, probiotics can get the infection under control. They can also minimize side effects during treatment. Thanks for your questions, and thanks for watching!

    Hello Amanda, recently I was diagnosed with GERD and the images of my endoscopy showed erosion on my esophagus. Another endoscopy report revealed that I have a small HH. And I experience pain after eating. I have been dealing with gut issues since 2017. My GI doctor prescribed Pepcid AC and Sucralfate. I really don't want to take these medications because of the long-term side effects or health issues they can cause and the fact that it suppresses the stomach acid which is not good. So, unfortunately, I am following the GI's instructions to take the medication. Along with the taking the medication, I am taking Aloe Vera juice, DGL, and, and HCI-Ease.

Since I drink 1-2 diluted acv glasses the pain has heavily subsided. However I am scared that it will silently affect the gastritis as I am having diarrhea atm. Any advice? Hi Chioma, are you experiencing increased pain or decreased pain with the ACV? If your body is showing signs of improvement, I would focus on this, and not worry about the gastritis. Hello Amanda. I’ve been taking omeprazole, 20 mg for GERD, for the past 30 years. I wanted to discontinue use and begin taking ACV and lemon juice for GERD. My wife and I started the keto diet on or about Oct 16, and we both have lost weight. My GERD symptoms returned shortly after stopping the Omeprazole, and I’ve added Betaine HCL. My symptoms continue to return shortly after eating. This morning I was awakened by lower abdominal pain, nausea, and bloating. I haven’t eaten anything yet … still have a burning sensation in my stomach. Thanks for any insight you may have. Don

Some chiropractors and naturopathic physicians know how to "adjust" a hiatal hernia, by physically pulling it back into place. Postural approaches, like not squishing your abdomen while sitting for example, may help. TO permanently correct it, surgery may be necessary, but this is certainly invasive and expensive. Hi Amanda, what if I have trouble breathing when eating and after I’ve eaten? Would you recommend increasing acid in this case? I know I have some form of gerd because apple cider vinegar capsules give me relief and allow me to breath a little better during a meal or after. Overall the shortness of breath seems to be associated with gerd but yet uncommon, I can’t find many resources on shortness of breath and gerd. The main issue I have is that I have trouble breathing when I eat, feel full quickly after just beginning a meal, and feel like food is passing very slowly down my esophagus or getting stuck around my chest causing discomfort. Do you think this sounds like gerd or something else that I’m completely missing? Do you think the acid supplements are harmful in my case? Thank you in advance

    • @ConfluenceNutrition
      @ConfluenceNutrition  2 года назад +1

      Hi Hala, shortness of breath is a common symptom of silent reflux. GERD is more advanced disease from reflux, which you may or may not have. THis is diagnosed by a doctor.
      Though reflux may be triggering these symptoms, there can be a lot of causes. I usually suggest people handle things in this order: stress relief practice daily (no excuses), diet changes to identify any food triggers, support digestive function (like acid supplementation), then managing infections or diagnoses. Any one of these levels may be involved, and working methodically can help you figure this puzzle out. THe acid supplements may or may not be helpful, your body will tell you...if they seem to help, then they help, if they make things worse, then they're to be avoided. Keep me posted!

      Hi Amanda thank you for the detailed response! It’s really interesting that you pin pointed the silent reflux because nearly 10 years ago I experienced silent reflux for a short time. I took pantoprazole for a couple weeks and it went away completely. It was slightly different because I felt like I had a lump in my throat. Happens to me occasionally now within the past year but its not a serious concern because it doesn’t happen often and doesn’t disrupt my day as the breathing issue does with each time I eat. Do you have any videos or blog posts on silent reflux? I will try to look into that topic more now that you’ve brought it to my attention. Thank you so much!

      Hi Dickie, I’m sorry to hear that you are also experiencing shortness of breath, I know how much it can disrupt one’s day. My symptoms have not gone away so until I’m examined by a professional I’m just trying to minimize my symptoms. There are 3 main things that help me cope: 1) eating 3 solid meals a day without snacking in between, 2) avoiding food/liquid 3 hours before bed time 3) limiting my fluid intake. I don’t know why but in my case I feel my breathing issues come on the most after drinking water and if I try to eat a meal after drinking more than a cup of water then I’m gasping for air during my meals. I also have benefited from using slippery elm, I find it very soothing and my breathing issues subside faster if I take it. Just as you’ve mentioned I’ve also tried acv, betain hcl, digestive enzyme’s, eliminating various foods, and following a keto diet as well but none of those things really worked for me. I know it can be very frustrating but hang in there and I hope you get well soon.

    Just love your videoes❤️
    One thing I need u to know that whenever I take apple cider vinegar my heartburn gets worse overtime the whole day and i get loose mucusful stool and chest tightness and I am also suffering from chronic nose congestion for 2 months
    But whenever i am on ppi or h2 blocker i tend to feel well and stool also comes out normal
    But the problem is that when i take this medications i feel gas in evening through the low abdomen area.
    Also probiotics tend to give me acid reflux
    Can't figure out the problem here

      Hi Lala! Thank you for your kind words :) It sounds to me like histamine sensitivity may be part of your picture here given the symptoms you mention, and then you said that H2 (histamine) blockers help you feel better, so that's 2 flags on the field for histamine. The evening gas may suggest you have a bacterial or other gut microbiome problem farther downstream in your gut...WOrking through to a custom solution for this situation can absolutely be done, but it's a step by step process that is too long to go into in this little answer! But here is a video that summarizes how to do it: ruclips.net/video/z2E0LsPoaAA/видео.html Sorry it's a little long, but it's value packed!

    Is it possible for BetaIne HCL to cause an ulcer?

    • @ConfluenceNutrition
      @ConfluenceNutrition  3 года назад +2

      Hi Millie, betaine used in excess may be able to irritate the gut lining, but in most cases ulcers are caused by an H. pylori infection. You may just have an irritated area, and it can heal if you give the HCL a break! You can also include something like slippery elm or DGL to help soothe your gut lining. Thanks for watching!

    • @Millie1nunez

      Yes I stopped B. HCL for the past 3 days and are taking DGL chewable, juicing cabbage juice, L glutamine. Hopefully that is the case just irritation and not an ulcer 🙏🏻
      One other question is there a way to tell if it’s an irritated area vs ulcer? Like if it’s an irritated area will it dissipate in about two weeks or less and if it’s an ulcer I’ve heard it last for months correct? Or is there really no way to tell without an EDG?

      @ConfluenceNutrition  3 года назад +2

      @@Millie1nunez Hi Millie, ok, now I understand where this is all coming from! I did a quick search on PubMed for cabbage juice ulcers, and did find a few studies that reported that cabbage juice healed gastric ulcers. The trouble is that these studies were very small (only up to 100 people), and all of them are from the 1950s. Apparently, there hasn't been any fresh research on this since then. My understanding of the science of ulcers is that in the vast majority of cases, they are caused by infection with the H. pylori bacteria. Gastritis is a much broader condition, and has many causes. I suppose cabbage juice is a fairly benign food-based option, but cabbage is also a high FODMAP food, which may increase gas and bloating, which might increase reflux or other symptoms. My suggestion would be the same as for any intervention, whether food, supplement, or behavior: try it carefully. Start with a low dose, evaluate how you feel, and slowly increase to the recommended amount. If it helps, more power to you! If not, starting low and increasing slowly protects you from a major flare and minimizes any setbacks you might experience from something. I hope that helps! Thanks for your question :)

      I encourage you to see your doctor to make sure everything is a ok, but usually, bright red blood in the stool is caused by hemorrhoids bleeding. Thanks for watching!

    Is it possible Protonix for stomach pain caused my silent reflux?

      @@ConfluenceNutrition I had an endoscopy ultrasounds and hida scan all coming back fine. Had slight stomach pain at first which is why the gastro gave me the 40mg of pantoprazole for possible ulcer. Prolly messed myself up cause I didn’t even need the ppi

      @@krogge10 you should discuss this with your doctor...a lot of people I speak with have rebound symptoms from reducing or stopping PPIs, so a slow tapering may be better, along side some stomach/reflux/heartburn soothers. I discuss in this video: ruclips.net/video/80JudNO2V4A/видео.html

    Hello, I have active heartburn everyday regardless of anything I take to make it go away. I have acid reflux and heartburn for over ten years now. When will be a good time to take the hcl supplements then?

      You could carefully test drive it for yourself and see if it improves things. If not, back to the drawing board. Have you ever tried the Reflux Gourmet product, or Gaviscon Advance LIQUID (from the EU market)?

      @@kaeeroyal3124 Yes, though I might suggest using it first to stop the reflux and allow the tissues to heal before trying HCL. I discuss all this in my reflux video: ruclips.net/video/80JudNO2V4A/видео.html

      Thank you, which one would you recommend the most? The gasviscon or the reflux gourmet. My reflux is so bad that I been on ppi meds for oven ten years, and finally decided to stop taking and started taking the betaine hcl, but everytime I take the betaine. The reflux and heartburn is so bad. I'm not sure what to do with dealing with the symptoms. So how long did you take the reflux gourmet and gaviscon until you knew when to stop taking them?

    • @ConfluenceNutrition
      @ConfluenceNutrition  Год назад

      @@kaeeroyal3124 You could try either one, they are equally effective. Sometimes the Reflux Gourmet is backordered, and depending on where in the world you live, the Gaviscon can be tricky to access too. In any event, if you are having severe pain after using the HCL, this is a strong signal from your body that now isn't the right time. It may never be right for you. But usually I suggest stopping and preventing the reflux and allowing the tissues to heal before trying the HCL. Hope that helps.
