That was fascinating, Dave. Now that you've given it a cleaning, it seems to running really well. I don't think it needs any extra drivers, but that's up to your preference. Always interested in what's new in your tool box.

Earlier in the year Harry of Henning's Trains had a short segment on wheel removal. It's very simple and works very well. (I haven't damaged a wheel or axle since employing his method).
You take a straight punch that is just small enough to fit inside the wheel hole. Hold the motor assembly on It's side, in you lap. Then strike the punch with the hammer. One or two smacks on the punch should do.
If you have a vise, you can correctly quarter the wheel sets going back together. I've used popsicle sticks between the vise jaws and wheel to keep from marking the wheel.
I did purchase a hobby horse press and wheel cup set some years back. It does make quartering the wheels easier. But, not a 100% need.

I have fixed bent roofs by heating the roof corner on our electric stove top burner and then carefully bending it straight. I have also used a torch. You do not want to melt the casting. No guaranties but my attempts worked out okay.
Cool. I may try someday to straighten it. I’ve heard plenty of people say they’ve don it successfully. I’ll build up the nerve and try it, eventually
You're a braver man than I am! I've got two Lionels with bent cab roofs, obviously they were dropped on a hard floor at some point. However since the bends aren't really all that bad I decided that "Discretion is the better part of valor!" and have left them alone. Honestly I don't even notice them anymore.

I’ve got a 1656 somebody converted to an 0-6-0 using a 1666 or 2026 motor. They were able to mount the motor using that screw hole in the back head but they also dremeled out part of the shell so the gears had clearance. It’s a very smooth runner and out pulls all of my other 0-4-0s. Looks like it shouldn’t be too difficult to convert one

Drill out that hole ,run a counter sink and proper screw. That's pretty much what holds that motor in. May have to do a little shim or minor mod.however you were on the right path.
Hopefully I’ll find a shell at some point and I’ll try it then. For now I’ll keep this one how it is, I think

Pulling 10 Baby Ruth boxcars plus a caboose, I would say that a successful repair. Too bad about the original 0-6-0 plan, but maybe for another vid.

You can convert that engine into an 0-6-0 I did it years ago. I’d have to look at the engine on how I mounted a 2037 motor, but mine runs great especially with the magnatraction. I also installed a Lionel whistle in the slope back tender which surprises a lot of people. If you need help in converting it just reach out to me, I do live in Jersey and would be glad to help.

If you look carefully at that photo of the 'coverted' engine, there *is* a screw where that hole was that doesn't go all the way through. Looking at pictures of the prewar 0-6-0 models, it looks like they too used this hole. It must have been eliminated for the 0-4-0 versions.
I saw the screw through the top on that one and was wondering what shell it was or if someone drilled through it.
@@dagryffynhobby Either seems very possible. I once modified an MPC F-3 chassis by opening up the rear screw holes so I could use a repainted 2343 shell on it. I may have to try this conversion someday.
A lot of the 0-6-0 and 1662 prewar switchers are often found with 1 or both classification lights broken off. It take a very lucky person to find both that are still intact
Yeah they tend to tip. My 1656 has both as did the 1615 I had.

There is a very good chance that the 0-6-0 you showed the picture of is original. Lionel actually sold these engines as an 0-6-0 in the O gauge line in 1940 and 41. They were the 203 and 201. The 201 had the Magic Electrol relay in the tender. I have a 203 and it is a very nice runner. Lionel used the 1666 motor in them, so the early 2026 motor you have is pretty close. These definitely look better as an 0-6-0, and I think it is too bad Lionel never made them that way after the war!
I didn’t realize the 203 and 201 were that much smaller than the larger versions of the 0-6-0. My only info to go on is that it was listed as a conversion by the seller. Also I read somewhere that Lionel had directions or a kit at some point to perform the conversion.
I would like to pick up the prewar versions of this little engine.
@@dagryffynhobby the 1662 will not run through O gauge switches, so they put the 1666 motor in the 201/203 instead. The 1946 postwar 1665 has the same problem. Lionel redesigned the gearing in 1948, so the 1656 doesn't have the same issue. Lionel cataloged a 403 in 1946 that was supposed to be an updated 203, but never made it. I definitely wish they had!
Wow that engine can really pull. I like your videos because you do staff as I would. You fix as best as you can. I love that little locomotive it runs good. Try to put a smoke unit in it. You could fit a MARX motor with a smoke unit in that small engine I think,
A Marx motor and smoker would be interesting. I’ll have to do some research on small smoke units
After your TLC on that little cutie of a 0-4-0 I'd say it doesn't need any more drivers, the standard equipment's doing just fine!
I might be interesting though to see just what kind of chopping and channeling the guy who did the conversion to an 0-6-0 had to do to make it happen.
(Hardly seems worth the trouble but hey, this hobby's a big tent! Got an idea? Go for it!)
It really is performing very well now, I’m glad I got it back together. If I pick up a shell at some point, maybe I’ll do the conversion then.
what kind of spray do you use to clean motor
Electrical contact cleaner. Does a pretty good job.
Very interesting how you serviced and fixed your 1662. Did you end up using crazy glue on the loose drive wheel? If so did the glue hold after repeated usage?
Thanks. I did use crazy glue on the drive wheel and it’s doing fine so far! How it will hold up only time will tell.

My 1656 0-4-0 came with only one classification light. Then I wondered, "When did you ever see an 0-4-0 with running lights? Don't they always run within yard limits?"
They'd only need classification lights (at night) or flags (by day) if they were going for a romp on the mainline, and maybe not even then depending on the railroad.
I don’t think they need them. Based on photos I think the classification lights were lower along the side anyway.
Don’t run any rectifiers through those Marx bridges they will hit it !
I’ve run a train or two into the bridge. I hope to make a custom bridge for that spot eventually
