I went through the North Sea while being deployed for Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Our battalion loaded its equipment on to merchant marine ships in Bremerhaven Germany. Upon completion of loading our unit was picked for volunteers to accompany that equipment along its journey, I volunteered. I spent 32 days aboard a merchant marine ship laden with 5 ton, 2.5 ton, 1/4 ton vehicles, tanks. APCs etc. We left Germany the day after Thanksgiving, dinner at port was THE BEST I’d ever had in the military, we sailed through the North Sea and around all the way to the Gulf. I did not experience one bit of sea sickness, but my buddy did. I did not know people could actually turn green whilst still alive, but they can lol. As soon as we got into calmer waters the captain of the ship had us join his crew and learn our duties during emergency operations such as putting out a fire, deploying life boats etc. There were male and female sailors on that ship, and at the time they were all making over 100 grand a year. I chose the wrong career, as an E4p I was earning right around $1300 a month with base pay, BAQ, and hazardous duty pay. The food aboard the ship was the absolute best anyone could ask for, and was available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The ships store opened 1 time a week, and as deployed soldiers we were allowed to write checks to purchase whatever we wanted, which I was very gracious for. I bought every carton of Marlboro 100 reds they had and 1 bottle of Jameson, which I snuck into my duffel bag and did not open until the end of hostilities, which we all toasted our success and drank IN SAUDI ARABIA, which is a huge no no in that country. We sailed through the Suez Canal to reach the Gulf eventually and leaving the country of Germany in November reaching the Middle East in December I was literally shocked at the difference in temperatures, it was HOT. We spent a week and a half at port unloading equipment and then finally rejoined our unit in a giant warehouse at port. 2 days later we boarded a bus and traveled for hours out into the desert eventually being basically dumped onto the side of the highway and then boarding deuce and a half’s and traveling miles into the desert before setting up shop along side MSR Green. 2nd CosCom 2nd ACR 7th Corps. The rest is history. But I will NEVER forget that 32 day trip spent aboard a merchant marine ship as an Army E4P, and from what I was told, I’m glad I volunteered as the rest of our unit flew to SA and spent that month on cots in a hot warehouse waiting on us to arrive.

@@thecannaiseur1535He's referring to his balance and his inability to maintain it on dry land. When you're working out in the ocean, you eventually become accustomed to constant movement of the waves, in order for your body to remain upright and not constantly falling over. This is colloquially known as "Getting your sea legs". Subsequently though, if you've been at sea for lengthy periods of time, when you actually return to dry land, the lack of movement under your feet can cause some people to have to face a readjustment period where their balance is continuously off-kilter for awhile as their mobility adapts back to walking on dry land. Hope that helps.😊
