Hi Luis. You're absolutely right and unfortunately, people don't realize how dairy is put into almost everything - eggs too. I think that is why a lot of people are scared off from a vegan diet - they simply don't want to read all the labels and know what they are putting into their bodies. In either case, a serious life threatening event like that could hopefully change his mind.
He's vegan now. Says he's trying it for a year and if he can pull it off, he'll continue to do it.

I understand the not killing part, but I don't get the not drinking milk and not eating eggs. Could someone educate me on it's bad to have any animal products (even if they are ethically sourced)?
I could easily give up meat tomorrow, but eggs and milk would be hard.

What does ethically sourced mean and how often can that actually be found?
Animals used for our food are eventually killed. Baby boy chicks are useless and killed on the first day by grinding or suffocation. What happens to the spent layer hens?
Baby boy cows are stolen from their mothers to be killed for veal, the daughters are used and abused the way their mothers were until their production falls and they too are killed for low grade meat.
All animal products have cholesterol, hormones, and promote bacterial growth that harms us everytime we eat them.
Here is some food for thought. When I was a teenager, I was a part of a demonstration showing plants feel. A few plants were hooked up to lie detector machines and I stood nearby thinking about pulling a leaf off. The machines registered as if they were in great pain. In fact, the machines showed more pain than when I actually did the act without thought. I assume that their 'nervous system' is more chemically based than ours. We need to treat all life with honor and respect regardless if it has a soul or not because life does feel.

@@biprilly there are aprox 340 million people in the us; lets assume that 250 million are over the age of, say 10 (another glitch being that vegan diets are dangerous as fuck for children unless you have the proper supplements; which is another way of saying that vegan isnt as healthy as people want to act like it is). 250 million people suddenly go vegan (lets not talk about what happens to all those hundreds of millions of "food" animals; thats a whole other topic). what do vegans eat? plants. how many pounds of plants would be consumed every day by 250 million people? i would say the term "metric tons" would definitely be appropriate. hows that for simple math. yes, its unfalsifiable, which means you cannot say with absolute certainty that they do not have those characteristics. also, since we want to do fallacies, that is a false equivalency; there is no evidence of the existence of bigfoot. plants on the other hand do exist; making the assumption that they dont feel pain or dont have sentience is not scientific. sure, we can assume that they dont simply because we have never seen it; but its not like we can "speak" their language either. maybe they do scream when we cut them, we just dont know it because we have no way of "hearing" them.

You realize how many plants have a symbiotic relationship with animals to help them reproduce and survive? When animals defecate and it has seeds in it, it allows them to grow and spread. And if plants are sentient, then they would have to possess conscious thought, not automic functions such as healing or breathing. A person can be brain dead and their body will just keep going, but they are not conscious. Some people point to plants communicating with one another as them being sentient, but that is still not sentience. Cells communicate with each other too, but they are not sentient. Just because something responds to stimulus doesn't make it sentient. Sentient beings have emotions, empathy, love, compassion, and the ability to reason. Automic functions to stimuli is not conscious behavior. Much of the people claiming that plants are sentient are using anecdotal eveidence, redefining terms or using psuedo science.

Kevin had a great point on where do you draw the line? Plants are living, feeling creatures too, they are just easier to catch. Yes, the meat industry is quite unethical, but so is mass agricultural. Where do we draw the line? I can understand the Vegan point of view that they are by choice opting out of the meat industry, however, I do not agree with them that their choice is any more ethical or moral. Truth be told, most of us need to eat less meat; however, the flip side is that in order to do so, we need to gradually stop purchasing meat products so that the industry shrinks. Also, cultured meat is a valid replacement that is both ethical and moral, as it means no harm to any living creature beyond a simple tissue biopsy. I still can’t get passed knowing that the smell of freshly cut vegetables is their scream of agony, a scream that happens during and after harvest. Maybe we should eat purposefully bred algae?
