    Seed may well have all it needs to grow until it's "true" leaves appear, but it would appear that they can still benefit from quality fertilizer. Thanks for the video.

      Thanks for the support!! We agree! They do fine without anything, but if we add nutrients, they remain to do even better in every experiment we’ve tried!

  • @Trazynn
    @Trazynn 4 года назад +1

    It's very simple
    Sprouts = hydroponic as you want to eat the sprouted seed as well. It doesn't need any added nutrients and it keeps everything clean.
    Microgreens = soil, they need the nutrition and you harvest above the seed so you don't have to worry about dirtying your product.

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 года назад +2

      We’ve actually practiced a lot since this video and we have amazing results with organic hydroponics for our microgreens... we still continue to test out hydroponics vs soil to continue to compare the results though! We equally love both methods!

    Did you all take into account the fact that your growing media had greatly differing heights between the Hydro, and the soil grows? I didn't hear if you referenced that, however your soil is brought right up towards the top of the tray, while the growing mat rests way deeper in the tray, making it appear as if it hasn't grown a lot. Not sure how tall your trays are, but had you somehow raised the mat up to the same level as the soil in the other trays, it would have been much closer.
    Just an observation.

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 года назад

      We get much stronger hydroponic grows since this video! I can’t remember if we factored that in this experiment, but we generally harvest about 1inch above the grow medium, whether it’s soil or hydroponic so the harvest heights should be the same as the trays are only about 1inch tall!

    My amaranth damped off on soil. 🙁I was going to try coconut coir but your soil ones did best. Oh wait, you just said your soil was sandy! That would help it dry out. I don’t have any sand so I think I’ll try coconut coir.Amaranth is hard to grow. I have 5 seasons of experience with growing both flower and vegetable seedlings with 8 feet of fluorescent lighting, but this is my first time trying microgreens. So far I’ve got radish, pea shoots and arugula growing successfully.

    How much do you water these during germination?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 года назад

      So generally we mist them twice a day during germination. If they seem like they are still very saturated or moist, we will skip misting them until it seems like it is needed again. Amaranth doesn't do well if it is over-watered.

      @OnTheGrow  5 лет назад +1

      No added nutrients, correct!

    • @psychorooks
      @psychorooks 4 года назад +2

      This surprises me as well. Coco coir is said to have very little nutritional value. Perhaps it has more to do with the ability of the roots to better anchor. Amaranth taproots grow comparable in depth to large indeterminate tomato plant varieties. I suppose insufficient progress at the root level could stunt overall growth. I'm new to gardening though. So, it's all still a bit of a mystery to me.

    • @dexxxxxxxx

      Yes... Everyone says that coco coir have no nutrients and I know that till first two leaves don't need any extra nutrients but still the growth in videos of yours is fabulous 😍...

    Wow, it sure looks like you left a lot of amaranth in the tray by using a knife to cut it.....

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 года назад +6

      We don't like to harvest too low. We've tried the auto-cutting tools but they always tear and bruise the stems which greatly shortens the life-shelf of it. We've noticed that using a good sharp knife will give us the best life-span for harvested product. Our sunflowers easily last 1.5months. Same with the more delicate crops like Broccoli. We aim to have produce that stays fresh for longer over quantity.
