Leonard Cohen feeling sad

- It was a windy day in May in 1976. I never thought it would really happen, an interview with Canadian poet Leonard Cohen. But there was his voice, unmistakable, on the phone. Not his agent nor the record company. "Hi, this is Leonard Cohen". A few hours later we met in the lobby of the Hamburg Hotel Europäischer Hof. Management wanted us to film the interview in one of their suites. That wasn't right, not for Leonard Cohen. So we found an empty room in the hotel cellar, the dining hall for staff. While the crew lit the surrroundings appropriately, I asked Leonard where his guitar was.
He didn't know he would be needing it, he said. But he walked back to his room to fetch it. And we recorded a very magical, unimaginable personal interview that day. And aware our 16mm camera cassette only held 10 minutes of film, I waited six minutes and asked, "Why don't you sing us a song, Leonard?"
And he did.
This is the result of that magical day. Unfortunately, some one at the TV station edited out some of the music. And inserted a ridiculous video wipe in the post. And discarded some beautiful music.
But the result is still a historical record I wanted to share with you.

I love him so much
He's the poet who owns my soul
The poet that created my soul!
See above...
Swooning. From my favourite of all the albums.
Es todo un placer compartir momentos contigo Leonard Cohen,el escucharte,el mirarte,es un deleite!
Sua voz ê.maravilhosa, PARABÉNS.
Congratulations. You have captured a moment.
Awesome thank you Jay!
Thank you Jay Tuck!
Priceless!
What a wonderful piece of music history you have here! 👍🙂🎸
You know how Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, makes a motion with her hand, towards her heart: " I gave thee mine before thou didst request it-" that is how I felt, still, will always feel when I see his face, hear his rich voice- and yes it is sexual, why not! Much older, who cares- and he is right about marriage- I am married and mostly happy but words of his often echo in my head... It isn't what youth are told especially the jazz about "completion" of self- and not for the weak, I think Leonard thought that also- Thanks for posting. Namaste from I wish I'd Been a Muse of Leonard Cohen's
Thank you very mutch Jay.
Wow! How exciting... I just wish you had English subtitles as those of us who do not speak German, cannot make out Leonard's voice beneath sound level of the German narration.
@Cyril omg thank you!
Yeah I know it's ridiculous. What a waste of high quality footage
Oh, there are subtitles. They are hilarious. Reminds me of when my brother-in-law had a very early version of software that coverts speech to writing. My sister recited some Shakespeare. I never knew Blackburn was mentioned in Shakespeare. It was in that translation. An example of the subtitles to the video:
Frankly, it made more sense in German.
Love you Lenny !!
Thank you!
I can't hear him too good 😓 but he's gorgeous
@Cyril Thanks, it's really funny! Leonard was brilliant.
Yes, how I would love some sub-titles. Or better still, upload the original. Could you please?
@Cyril thanks ❤️
In the rings of her silk
In the hinge of her thighs
Where I have to go begging in beauty's disguise
WE NEED SUBTITLES!!!

"A singer must not die"... :'( no more new songs...
lolol. The first half is Cohen at his finest. But, haha, everyone needs to put on the youtube Captions for the second half. hahahahah
Here are some more clips of historical music and musicians I filmed in the 70s and 80s:
vimeo.com/showcase/5254160
you filmed this!?
@@MikesMusicMethod Yes, correct. For German TV.
@@jaytuck how cool. I'm gonna be poking around your vimeo this week. Any good personal conversations with any of those you interviewed?
@@MikesMusicMethod Mick Jagger's good. Sorry it's all in German. I produced the films for German TV.
Meghan Haas inch panel, and kind of Hoffa Hintington go to Havan for spam. haha these captions are a joy.
If any of my fellow Cohen lovers speak German ...pls translate? I’m suffering to know what he is saying here ... thank you
Thanks for sharing, sincerely, but the German overdub makes it very difficult to extract leonard's responses. Is the transcript available?
Does anyone know what guitar this is? Cant seem to find it online
What is the title of this song please?
"A singer must die", from the album "New skin for the old ceremony".
Thank you, I found it eventually. This way he sings it here is magic tho, best version I heard yet
Yes please add English - frau and Blake, are all I can understand and Leonard was expressing so much more probably about vilified Suzanne Elrod- of all the biographies written the "so called TRUTH" how I wish she, the mother of his children would speak. Nothing she could make me not desire him and live for his words and music but as a sufferer of depression, a victim of sex abuse ( Leonard would pulverize the creep, since he used 1 of his books to " groom me ") - Namaste off to rehab...
Thank you for sharing "yatuck", but what about titling in English the German part, and viceversa?
The splitting of the song in 2 is terrible! You should have it re-edited (if you cannot do it yourself) putting the interview at the end!
Li Lise 8
He explained all this in the introduction.
So, are you the guy that interviewed him?
Yes, I interviewed Leonard Cohen twice in Hamburg. Unfortunately, the original track with the English has been lost over the years. If you page down a little here, you can see other interviews I did with Mick Jagger, Andy Warhol and many others.
Song name ?
The Germans again
That language makes me vomit
Seems when he sings he always closes his eyes. Is he shameful, is he just going inward or just lonely depressed or he feels he's a terrible singer. He's made comments about the fact that he can't sing.
I know a singer called Willy Vlautin who has a similar singing voice, he too closes his eyes when he sings. Could be a self conscious thing
@@absolving I think he is feeling the words, it's like when people kiss, they close their eyes.
I speak not German.
Infuriating voice over translation.
Don't be infuriated ! This interview was recorded exclusively for NDR German Television, and translated into the native language of the viewers. When I salvaged this, the original mag track had been destroyed. So be glad - with me - that we could at least save this much.
@@jaytuck you're right. Thanks for posting
@@absolving Thank you for your understanding. I think we are both great fans of this incredible poet. You cannot begin to imagine the thrill I felt when he committed to an interview on the phone, topped only by the thrill as he sat three feet away on a chair and sang "Suzanne."
Oh for gods sake, will the whole world just speak ENGLISH! It's stupid to have foreign languages.
stfu lol
Don't forget, you speak a foreign language as well, lol.
I am addicted to Leonard Cohen x
I can feel your anger but that's a pretty dumb thing to say.
Skull Face was kinda right
