- “I don’t feel any compulsion just to stand under the spotlight night after night unless I have something to say“ - Leonard Cohen

One evening in December of 1974, Leonard Cohen went on WBAI FM in New York City. This radio interview has rarely been heard since the night it aired. But it's been preserved by the Pacifica Radio Archives (pacificaradioarchives.org).
Cohen talked about his creative endeavors and influences during the interview, but we circled in on the conversation about his writing and his poetry. Cohen read a poem he had written nearly 20 years earlier, Two Went to Sleep. There's something about hearing him read his own words and taking a journey into his mind. RIP.

i just discovered this while looking for the link to the interview. kathleen kendel...the interviewer, was my mother...she would have been 69 years old today 1-31-17. im glad i found this.
That sure must have been a wonderful feeling....I know the feeling. I wish I could listen to my mother’s voice one more time
May she rest in peace, and I'm sure that wherever her soul lies, she remembers you just as you too remember her.
I have my mother singing My Yiddishe Mama her favourite song ❤️
Rest in peace in Montréal.
i started crying at this comment i dont know why
his voice is intoxicating
Melanie Anne Ahern his voice is ASMR to me.
He can't help it. He had no choice. He was born with the gift of a golden voice.
Juste en parlant, je le trouve très sexy...
It's an ASMR.
I'm never going to get over his passing. I loved his music and his poetry, so amazing! This makes me want to cry. I didn't discover Leonard Cohen till 2009 right after I turned 21. I was in a very depressing state and wanted to kill myself. A friend of mine borrowed my iPod and uploaded some music on to it, I hadn't gone through all of the artists yet so I had no idea what was on there. Anyway, I was walking around town, listening to my iPod on shuffle, thinking about blowing my brains out. It was a warm summer evening, and I had just snorted some OxyContin and was just trying to figure myself out, I was lost. All of a sudden a song popped up that stopped me dead in my tracks. It was "The Butcher" by Leonard Cohen, I just stood there listening to the strange lyrics and found myself mesmerized by this song. I decided to see if I had more of his stuff on there and lo and behold! I had 3 full albums on there. "Songs Of Leonard Cohen", "Songs From A Room", and "Songs Of Love And Hate". I clicked on a song titled "Avalanche" and the crazy guitar strumming mixed with the intense lyrics sucked me in and I instantly changed the way I looked at the world. I became a hardcore Leonard Cohen fan!!! You will be missed Mr. Cohen, thank you for saving my life.
Juaquin Rodriguez Excellent post.I would suspect many of us found Cohen in similar ways.Sort of an unexpected hand on your shoulder when you are stumbling down some very dark corridor of your life.Thank you,Leonard.RIP
Juaquin Rodriguez found in 1994 with the natual born killers soundtrack. thank you trent Reznor
@Juaquin Rodriguez: The sound that Cohen achieves is not by strumming, but picking in triplets (bass note, followed by G and then B strings, usually)... Search on here for "The Stranger Song," or "The Partisan;" he uses the same technique in those songs. To get the sound that he does requires a great deal of skill... hours (years?), of practice to achieve that kind of right hand speed.
Radagast-2013 Those are amazing songs.
Sammy Howell yes. The world lost an amazing man. There will never be another like him.
I love the sound of his voice, it is so deep and smooth.
One of the most famous poems from Ancient China is also about the moonlight reflected off the snow as seen from a window.
That poem was so relaxing his voice is so relaxing this is what it's like to enjoy ASMR back in 1974.
I love the way he reads the poem...
That was a really beautiful yet grim poem. He was one amazing poet. (And hearing the interview parts during the credits makes me wonder how he felt about Jeff Buckley's cover of Hallelujah )
well, he was in need of money at the time, so atleast he wasnt too unpleased about the royalty checks coming in
Jeff had a beautiful voice I don't see why he would dislike it.
John Cale's cover is better than Jeff Buckley's.
You’re free to feel that way
I'm in love with his voice.
The animation is so beautiful and insightful, it gives a new set of meaning to the words it seems. I love all of this so much
Every time I hear this mans voice my heart sinks like it did from heart break back in the day... :( I miss you sir
I’ve never heard something so freakishly moving. The way he told the story, and the story itself !
Sisters of mercy is one the most beautiful songs ever.
Give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld, so I can sigh eternally......Kurt cobain. Pennyroyal tea
Mikail Stacy I was thinking the same thing
Mikail Stacy That line kept boiling over in my mind when I heard he died. Even Cohen was shocked that Cobain was a fan.
Hope they meet on some astral plain...
Yes Kurt maybe would have done better as a spoken word musician more than the superstar they tried to make him he seemed really uncomfortable and miserable which I guess he was. Cohen did not have those same industry pressures on him the 60s were different than the 90s.
he was a bard, he will be missed
my favorite one since the patti smith one
This isn't the Hallelujah I wanted, but this man will always be a god to me.
Thank you, Mr. Cohen.
Such a beautiful story. So masterfully told. 👍
RIP Dear Soul... Take this waltz, TAKE this waltz! :'(
That is absolutely beautiful. Please do more of these with Leonard interviews and audio if you can. Thanks!
These videos ALWAYS put me back on track in life. They truly and deeply Inspire me. I love them dearly. Thank you!!!
Rip my man, you'll be missed.
mayank sharma agreed I enjoy his poetry.
Beautifully done.
Mesmerizing. I dearly wish I could create art like that.
such a nice voice, I wish I could fall asleep to him reading each night
the poem is so beautiful :''''''')
That was wonderful.
Amazing I love it!
wonderful this!
Thanks to who made this...
That was so beautiful
Love this series ❤
beauty! thanks Mr Cohen
I think that's the best ending to a non-sexual menege-a-troi that's ever happened to anyone AND will ever happen to anyone!
LEONARD COHEN SAYS IT ALL RIP MY FREIND
Wonderful
I want to have a tape or something with his voice reading this poet and i would listen to it constantly...
I've really enjoyed this! 😄
Wow! Edmonton, my home! ♡ Awesome.
thanks :)
I do appreciate!
Thank you.
hasta luego apóstol lo llevo en mi corazón y gracias por tan hermosa doctrina
RIP Cohen, love that guy.

Such a loss...rest in peace.
amatissimo Leonard
You guys should do one on Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon
Wow. . .
Ahhhhhhhhh.....I said.
To all lovers of poetry.
"It was dawn and I had this completed song to sing for them." and then they went to bed.
See you later, space cowboy.
+maynor marin :)
Some people call me space cowboy I remember that song. Some people call me Maurice!.
I used to carry around a copy of Let Us Compare Mythologies in my backpack in high school. Profound artist and wonderful man, and this is a great tribute to him!
Would you guys ever consider making one of these for Bill Hicks or George Carlin?
R.I.P in Montréal!
so much love. what's the song that plays in the background at the end? i'm not very familiar with his work
The song used in the video is Night Watchman - David Lawrence
Do you know the other music in the video?
What's the soundtrack in the background in here? I like it.
❤
Any one know what the track is in the intro?
Just curious if its one of his songs or some other persons because its really cool
Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan influenced me to write more poems. I been listening to their stuff for years now it's unhealthy. lol
Make one of these with Judy Collins
quite an artist!
#OdedFriedGaon #OdedMusic #Audioded
He left out the bit where, after he'd read them Sisters Of Mercy, he said 'now will you let me do you? If you don't, I'll re-name it Couple Of Cockteases - and I'll change all the words'.
hay quá đi mất
Could someone give their interpretations on the last two couplets - "Visiting death till they wore out their welcome; visiting death till the right disguise worked"? My native language isn't English but I find this poem beautiful.
That's the beauty of poetry. You can interprete it however you wish.
@@rythianblacktheblackemporium What would be your interpretation? If you don't mind sharing. :)
what's the songs used in this video?
could you link in the description the pieces of music you’re playing throughout the video?
Joni's" the jungle line" is a master piece in comparison to this, Leonards comeback, it has to be said, was great.
Does Patrick Smith have an instagram or anything? I love the way the animations look and I wanna see more

Two went to sleep
almost every night
one dreamed of mud
one dreamed of Asia
visiting a zeppelin
visiting Nijinsky
Two went to sleep
one dreamed of ribs
one dreamed of senators
Two went to sleep
two travellers
The long marriage
in the dark
The sleep was old
the travellers were old
one dreamed of oranges
one dreamed of Carthage
Two friends asleep
years locked in travel
Good night my darling
as the dreams waved goodbye
one travelled lightly
one walked through water
visiting a chess game
visiting a booth
always returning
to wait out the day
One carried matches
one climbed a beehive
one sold an earphone
one shot a German
Two went to sleep
every sleep went together
wandering away
from an operating table
one dreamed of grass
one dreamed of spokes
one bargained nicely
one was a snowman
one counted medicine
one tasted pencils
one was a child
one was a traitor
visiting heavy industry
visiting the family
Two went to sleep
none could foretell
one went with baskets
one took a ledger
one night happy
one night in terror
Love could not bind them
Fear could not either
they went unconnected
they never knew where
always returning
to wait out the day
parting with kissing
parting with yawns
visiting Death till
they wore out their welcome
visiting Death till
the right disguise worked
Leonard Cohen ~ 1964
what's the song playing at the end? starting at 4:23?
It's the instrumental version of a song called Night Watchman by David Lawrence
Great sonf
Very nice interpretation of his poem. How many hours does an episode like this take to animate?
animation takes a few weeks.
Anybody know what the song in the end is??
I have tried to search for the Spanish translation without result, could you help me?
What is the song at the end

Mr. Rogers
Eddie Guerrero
Bob Ross
Prince
Bruce Lee
J Dilla

Anyone know where the music is from?
anyone know the song at the end?
The caricature misses his feel. He is softer.
I wonder what he thought of K.D Lang's version of Hallelujah. Definitely the best version of it.
His opinion was that hers is the best following the Olympic performance. I ag

Dos se fueron a dormir
Dos se fueron a dormir
casi todas las noches
uno soñó con barro
uno soñado con Asia
visitando un zepelín
visitando Nijinsky
Dos se fueron a dormir
uno soñaba con costillas
uno soñaba con senadores
Dos se fueron a dormir
dos viajeros
El largo matrimonio
en la oscuridad
El sueño era viejo
los viajeros eran viejos
uno soñaba con naranjas
uno soñó con Cartago
Dos amigos dormidos
años encerrados en viajes
Buenas noches mi amor
mientras los sueños se despedían
uno viajó a la ligera
uno caminó por el agua
visitando un juego de ajedrez
visitando un stand
siempre regresando
esperar el día
Uno llevaba fósforos
uno trepó a una colmena
uno vendió un auricular
un tiro a un alemán
Dos se fueron a dormir
todos los sueños fueron juntos
vagando
desde una mesa de operaciones
uno soñó con pasto
uno soñaba con radios
uno regateó muy bien
uno era un muñeco de nieve
una medicina contada
uno probó lápices
uno era un niño
uno era un traidor
visitando la industria pesada
visitando a la familia
Dos se fueron a dormir
nadie pudo predecir
uno fue con cestas
uno tomó un libro mayor
una noche feliz
una noche de terror
El amor no pudo atarlos
El miedo tampoco pudo
se desconectaron
nunca supieron donde
siempre regresando
esperar el día
separarse de los besos
despedirse con bostezos
visitando la muerte hasta
ellos gastaron su bienvenida
visitando la muerte hasta
el disfraz correcto funcionó

Spotlight uh
The calm writer never gets laid. And that's me. . .
:)
Leonard didn't exactly have a great singing voice, but boy could he read poetry.
I didn't really understand that poem.. Could someone explain to me?
it is what you think it is.
John Werner Relationships, dear boy, and the distances and differences between the sexes that prevent full cohesion.
cactaceous thank you! I thought it was somethings like that. But I thought the dreams meant more than just that they are different
All the poem was for me is words that sound nice together. I got no meaning at all. It was a wandering surreal monologue with no purpose, unless it was to suggest that the two could never find any connection outside of sleep but always came back for that anyhow. Which means nothing to me either. I didn't really like it. But then, I've written poetry many times and always hate it later.
John Werner I can tell you the meaning
Music?
David Lawrence - Night Watchman (Instrumental Version)
FuckJimmyPop Can't seem to find it :( Love the guitar tone.
i don't understand "Two Slept Together"...
🙄😞🤔
I didn't understand the poem... :/
two Lovers dreaming two Lovers sleeping one Dreams of light one only knows darknes
two Lovers dreaming about what
i could listen to him speak all day about nothing.
Would love me a girl with a Southern accent .. y'all!!
The person in the animation doesn't look ANYTHING like Leonard Cohen, including not looking like a 1974 Leonard Cohen.
i have no idea what is happening
