I have a smaller variety of varnishes. The only one I've used and not have a good outcome is the triple thick as the last time I used it, it dried tacky so I haven't used it since. However, I may give that a go again when I get the chance to buy a small bottle! Have you tried the Mont Marte (Australian brand) Gloss Clay Varnish Signature? It is made specifically for polymer (apparently may dry tacky on polymer clay due to plasticiser in clay) and air hardening clay (Dried absolutely perfect with no tackiness in my experience). I think it may be polyurethane based. They also made the iridescent varnish with pretty glitter in it.... might look tacky (not feel) to some people but it is quite pretty! Mont Marte makes air dry clay too. Similar to Jovi but a tad more fibrous. I also have the Jo Sonja Polyurethane gloss varnish, Dura-Clear Matte and High Gloss finish. in my experience, they all dried perfectly fine on air dry clay... and the water droplets test. I will get back to you on that! Thank you for your educational videos as always! 🥰
Thank you JoJo. That’s not good that you found it went tacky, I wonder if the bottle needed a good shake or reacted with something, not sure. I really love it. A lot of this style of varnish are fairly similar so worth trying any we can get hold of. What I like about the triple thick is the small sizes they do them in so it’s really not expensive to try a few. I’ve not tried that brand no, sounds like you are a pro crafter 😁 happy crafting 😊❤️

What do you recommend for dog paw prints on clay? I was told to use a clear acrylic coating to protect it, but there seems to be a lot of options. I want to preserve his paw print without damaging it or leaving brush marks.
Thank you so much for this video💕 im planing on using DAS to make some watercolor palettes, what would you recommend as a sealant for these? They will be repeatedly subjected to water, watercolor paint and washing so i would want to make sure the palette does not soften. I have never used air dry clay, this will be my first go 😊 Thank you🥰
If you are happy with using resin then UV resin is really robust and water resistant, otherwise I would use a polyurethane varnish or any other varnish that is like a yacht varnish, best of luck and thanks for watching ☺️

super informative video! is the das varnish non flammable/fire resistant? I want to make an ashtray for a friend but don’t want it to turn into a fire hazard lol. thanks !
After watching this, I let my air dry clay dry for 72 hours and coated it with Triple Thick. I'm having an issue with the Triple Thick coming up/off on some of my pieces. Any advice? What could be going wrong?
I’m wondering how thick you put the triple thick on, or if the piece wasn’t fully dry, it shouldn’t be peeling off, sorry to hear it’s no quite gone to plan, hopefully can fix it
Hi im a newbie to clay sculpures an just starting getting into it i wanted to ask a few questions, would you recommend air dry clay or oven bake clay for faster dry times ? Also after i make my sculptures i will be using acrylic paints to paint them an im going to use the decoart triple thick gloss varnish will be ok to use over the acrylic paint once the paint has dried ? Thanks
Hi and welcome, if you need the clay to dry/cure fast then you want to use polymer clay that you bake in the oven to cure. Yes on my air dry clay I paint with acrylic pains and the coat with triple thick, best of luck, as any questions you like and I will do my best to help ❤
Depends on your varnish, I’d add a glass dish or similar inside to make sure as the stubs are likely to damage it, did you see my paint palettes video? Someone commented the one looked like an air dry clay ashtray! 😁
This was so helpful! But I have a question and I hope you’ll be able to see this 🥹 I am currently using DAS varnish on my air dry clay piece that I’ve just done with DAS clay. What I’ve made is a little box to put jewelry and stuff like that in it, so it consists of a box and then the lid to the box. Do you know if I can varnish the whole lid and the whole box part, or if I shouldn’t varnish where the lid meets the box in case they somehow stick together or if it ruins the varnish? Basically what I mean is if the das varnish is sticky and if it’s ok to rub against another piece that is varnished? I’m really struggling 😖😖 so far I have only varnished the parts where the lid and the box don’t touch just in case it’s not a good idea 😫
You do want to varnish it all yes, but let one half dry fully then turn over and varnish the other halves, then dry for way longer than you think before you put them together as one, hope this helps, best of luck
What sealant do you recommend if you have used watercolour paint instead of acrylic paint to decorate? Tired modge podge on a test piece and like I thought as it's water based it smears the paint so needing options
Hmmm, I tend to use mod podge and brush it on gently, then use something shinier over this: AIR DRY CLAY with Watercolor Video ruclips.net/video/IKSAEC-BKKE/видео.html
Hi! So I live in Cyprus and most of these brands aren’t available here! Are there acrylic varnishes suitable for clay, or do they all seep into the clay? If so what brands would you recommend?❤ (I’m also not comfortable with using resin due to it being toxic!)
Hi, any craft varnish should work, if the first coat soaks in, a second layer should sit on the top, I always just say to do a test piece first on a dry scrap of clay, best of all
They don’t seem to go as far as say a tin of varnish, the triple thick is thick 🤪 so doesn’t last so long as you end up putting more on, depends how big your projects are and if they are much better value for bigger bottles or if any are on offer ☺️❤️
Hi, just wanted to ask if after a coat of acrylic paint and one of these varnish, does the the paint have any peeling? As in those the coats comes off of the clay? Also does the Triple Thick and the Matte Varnish leave any brushes marks at the end?
You can get some brush strokes and I have not experienced peeling with either of those, always let dry really well not touching anything against it and you should be good, thanks 😊
You could leave it for now and then coat once you have some more, even if that is a while away, just don’t put near any moisture or it would soak that up and go soft. Or if you have any mod podge you could give a coat of that and then at a later date still varnish over the top. I have a few unglazed pieces that have been just fine for a while, thanks
@RedRockingBird, Have you ever tried a using Minwax Water Based Polycrylic Protective Finish [Brush On ] which comes in matte, satin, semi-gloss & gloss? It has little to no VOC's and is easy for clean up. Also, what about Varathane's Water Based Interior Ultimate Polyurethane which also comes in multiple finishes and is low VOC's with easy clean up. Just curious, if you've tried either product, how did it do with the air dry clay? ~~Christy~~
They will be great I’m sure, i don’t think I can get them as easily here in the Uk but have had similar. I could do with a shipment of them ALL 😂❤️ give a try, thanks
I wouldn’t want to make a sink out of air dry clay, if water got in it would go soft again. You would need to make it out of clay that is fired in the kiln and glazed
I’m not as familiar with mud clay, air dry clay is not food safe but traditional earthenware ceramic clay that can be fired is best for being food safe
If you like using it and it works for you then yes of course…no ooops at all, it’s just not my preference. But at the end of the day I did cover a clay piece in dishwasher mod podge and it actually survived the dishwasher 😂🥰 I made a video!!!
I have in the past and not had a problem but I don’t recommend as many people say it can become sticky over time, so many different ones they’ll all be different, thanks for watching
I just tried duraclear matte varnish on my air dry clay creation. It has caused the acrylic paint to bleed off of my clay!! Anyone have experience with this? What should I do :(
Oh no, sorry to hear it didn't quite go to plan, the only thing I can think is that the acrylic paint wasn't fully dry first, once fully dry acrylic paint shouldn't move 💗
hi! i’ve been trying to glaze a piece i made but i painted it with oil paint instead of acrylic and i somehow find it isn’t working as expected. It is not giving it a glowy finish but rather darkening the paint and I don’t know if it’s something I’m doing wrong or if it’s because I’m not supposed to use oil paint. Can you help a girl out please? 😭
Hi, I've not painted the air dry clay with oil paint before, you do have to wait a long time for the oil paint to 'dry', an awful lot longer than acrylic paint
@@RedRockingBird i’ve waited for weeks 😭😭 idk i think i’m just gonna buy some acrylic paint and try to paint over it to see if it works. Thanks anyways!!
question - i am doing a project for my mum's birthday and am making it out of das air dry clay. i am hoping to paint it with acrylics, and then seal it with one of these. do i need to seal the clay or use any of these on the clay before painting and then seal again? or can i paint straight on my dry air-dry clay and then seal it after? anybody's advice would be greatly appreciated! thank you 😊💞
Hi, how wonderful you are creating something special for your Mum’s birthday. Let your piece 100% dry, more than you think, paint with acrylic paint, leave to completely dry again and then varnish, this varnish top coat I find is more important than undercoating, thanks and best of luck 😊
So I remember in 4th grade my teacher had us make magnets out of real bagels. She sprayed something on it so it was basically plastic. I’m trying to remember what is was.

Do you think the triple thick would work if I wanted to make a paint palette for myself? :) I saw you use UV resin, but I am very much a beginner and still don't want to invest with buying resin, but I'd love to have a palette as one of my first projects! Your videos are very helpful, thank you!
I really would think so and I would give it a go, if the varnish wears off with time then you can coat it again for sure, thanks for watching, give it a go 😊❤️
Hello, do we need any protective measures (gloves, etc) when using varnishes like acrylic varnish for example?
Hi, yes I’d always recommend gloves, a mask and good ventilation, and protect surfaces
super informative video! is the das varnish non flammable/fire resistant? I want to make an ashtray for a friend but don’t want it to turn into a fire hazard lol. thanks !
I’m not entirely sure on this one
After watching this, I let my air dry clay dry for 72 hours and coated it with Triple Thick. I'm having an issue with the Triple Thick coming up/off on some of my pieces. Any advice? What could be going wrong?
I’m wondering how thick you put the triple thick on, or if the piece wasn’t fully dry, it shouldn’t be peeling off, sorry to hear it’s no quite gone to plan, hopefully can fix it
May i ask, if it also gives stability for the clay? Like a liquid risin?
In my opinion yes it does, resin the most yes
Are any of these varnishes waterproof? It wouldn’t be to drink out of, simply for holding water
Resin works but I also made this video to test out a resin alternative:Air Dry Clay Vase for Flowers

Thanks!
I made an ashtray out of air dry clay. Will it last if I use it after varnishing it?
Depends on your varnish, I’d add a glass dish or similar inside to make sure as the stubs are likely to damage it, did you see my paint palettes video? Someone commented the one looked like an air dry clay ashtray! 😁
Can it be glazed without uv light ? Will it just dry normally
All dry normally in the air yes, apart from in resin that can be cured under a lamp or in the sun
Hi, can you use varnished/glazed air dry clay as tea light holders? How do they react when put on top of a candle?
Use one which is not flammable and we never leave a flame unattended. It’s on my list for a video, thanks 😊
Well explained
Hope it was helpful, thanks 😊
Thank you ❤️Can i use Liquitex pouring medium gloss ?
If you’re ok painting it on then yes I would
This was so helpful!
@@RedRockingBird thank you so much!!! I didn’t varnish everything because I was too unsure about what to do but this helped me so so much 🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶🫶
@@ebbafrisk3002 best of luck ❤️
What sealant do you recommend if you have used watercolour paint instead of acrylic paint to decorate? Tired modge podge on a test piece and like I thought as it's water based it smears the paint so needing options
Hmmm, I tend to use mod podge and brush it on gently, then use something shinier over this:

Do you think the matte varnish could work on ceramic? Not sure how different ceramic is from air dry clay.
They are quite different, ceramics need glaze and to be fired to get their protective coating
Hi! So I live in Cyprus and most of these brands aren’t available here! Are there acrylic varnishes suitable for clay, or do they all seep into the clay? If so what brands would you recommend?❤ (I’m also not comfortable with using resin due to it being toxic!)
Hi, any craft varnish should work, if the first coat soaks in, a second layer should sit on the top, I always just say to do a test piece first on a dry scrap of clay, best of all
Thank you for this!!
You're so welcome, thanks for watching ❤️
Thank you for such an informative video! 😊
Glad you think so, thank you 😊
Would you say the small tubes of the Deco Art last a long time? Or would you recommend getting the 8fl oz over the 2fl oz bottles?
They don’t seem to go as far as say a tin of varnish, the triple thick is thick 🤪 so doesn’t last so long as you end up putting more on, depends how big your projects are and if they are much better value for bigger bottles or if any are on offer ☺️❤️
Which would be heat resistant if using for coasters but not wanting to use resin?
I’m not so sure on that one
Hi, just wanted to ask if after a coat of acrylic paint and one of these varnish, does the the paint have any peeling? As in those the coats comes off of the clay? Also does the Triple Thick and the Matte Varnish leave any brushes marks at the end?
You can get some brush strokes and I have not experienced peeling with either of those, always let dry really well not touching anything against it and you should be good, thanks 😊
Try putting gesso before painting it leave it for a day, It also might be because of the clay isn’t fully dry
OOO thanks you so much for this video! I need this knowledge :D
Hopefully you find it useful, thank you 😊❤️
But can you write me which varnish on the circe is A glass ? this change color @@RedRockingBird
@@Klaudia-q4l top left is the acrylic gloss medium yes the one that darkened the bare clay
Does dust get stuck to all of them???? Pls replyyy
I don’t find dust to be a problem, if you do then place a Tupperware tub lightly over the top while drying to keep free of dust
I've ran out of varnish and cant buy yet cause my fav one is sold out. Is it okay to not use any varnish or coating?
I have a big clay bowl (DAS clay) that i want to make into a sink, how can/should i waterproof the inside? If even possible🙏🏼
I wouldn’t want to make a sink out of air dry clay, if water got in it would go soft again. You would need to make it out of clay that is fired in the kiln and glazed
Are any of these food safe? Like could I use them to cover a ceramic mug and make it safe to drink out of?
Earthenware clay that you fire in a kiln is what I recommend for being food safe
@@RedRockingBird Ok, thanks so much!
Can we use this if we used pastel colours on airdry clay
I don’t tend to, but you can experiment and as long as you can find a varnish or topcoat to not reactivate the pastel
Varnish and seal before or after painting?
Fully dry….for longer than you think. Then paint, let dry and then seal
Thank you very much for your tutorial
You are welcome, thank you 😊
If I make things with mud clay then varnish with any of these will it be food safe?please reply ❤
I’m not as familiar with mud clay, air dry clay is not food safe but traditional earthenware ceramic clay that can be fired is best for being food safe
@@RedRockingBird thank you 😊
could you suggest how to varnish clay without smudging the paint? everytime i varnish it somehow always smudges my acrylic paint under it :(
If you are using acrylic paint and letting it dry 100% before varnishing it shouldn’t smudge at all
If you use watercolor paint or acrylic gouache, those will re-wet and smudge
oops.. I have been using mod podge.. Is that still okay to use..?
If you like using it and it works for you then yes of course…no ooops at all, it’s just not my preference. But at the end of the day I did cover a clay piece in dishwasher mod podge and it actually survived the dishwasher 😂🥰 I made a video!!!
@@RedRockingBird Thank you so much..!! Watching it now💗💕
Can I use clear nail polish for glaze?
I have in the past and not had a problem but I don’t recommend as many people say it can become sticky over time, so many different ones they’ll all be different, thanks for watching
Can you paint over something that you have varnish or glaze?
Try it, as long as you then seal over the top again I would guess that would be ok
Can we wash them after dried? I want to make coasters . Thanks
Meant to add - which varnish for the above purpose. thanks
Best sponge with a damp cloth
For coasters I like UV resin
Hi @@mooncat444 can you remove any of the oil paint first, if you plan to paint again I would remove the oil paint first, worth a try ❤️❤️
question - i am doing a project for my mum's birthday and am making it out of das air dry clay. i am hoping to paint it with acrylics, and then seal it with one of these. do i need to seal the clay or use any of these on the clay before painting and then seal again? or can i paint straight on my dry air-dry clay and then seal it after? anybody's advice would be greatly appreciated! thank you 😊💞
Hi, how wonderful you are creating something special for your Mum’s birthday. Let your piece 100% dry, more than you think, paint with acrylic paint, leave to completely dry again and then varnish, this varnish top coat I find is more important than undercoating, thanks and best of luck 😊
@@RedRockingBird thank you so so much! i will keep you updated with how it goes! 😁

Did you see the water test at the end?
would sweat make it go mushy?
Moisture on bare clay would soften the clay
So I remember in 4th grade my teacher had us make magnets out of real bagels. She sprayed something on it so it was basically plastic. I’m trying to remember what is was.
real bagels as in I'd add cream cheese?? Let me know when you remember, truly intrigued ❤

You can and I did in my previous varnishes video, I have one that never went tacky, but plenty of people say that nail polish eventually goes tacky with time, thanks
