  • Silverlands was built as a large country house in 1820 by local brewer Robert Porter in Chertsey, Surrey
It was rebuilt by Vice-Admiral Sir Frederick Hotham in 1849 and became the Hotham family home
The Actors' Orphanage, backed by Noel Coward, moved to Silverlands in 1938 and remained for 20 years
The property was also used as a nursing school to train staff for a local hospital and nearby asylum
In 2002 plans to turn the abandoned property into a clinic for paedophile were blocked by the local community
It has remained empty ever since and these images show how the once grand building is rotting and decaying

Was my home, in the orphanage, when I was a little girl, about 1955-60. I watch some of these videos in the hope of remembering more than I do, but I don't, no memories are jogged.

Thankyou for sharing this fascinating building, it has some beautiful features. Sadly water damage has done for a lot of it now. Hope the staff were kind & children happy. Its good that you were able to document the place before it collapses.

Sarah Strong I was thinking the same. Hope for that even if some sadness came across to me as soon as I saw this building.

You always put such an emotional piano song as the opening of video, it makes the video even sadder you know! I'm touched !

The woodwork and staircase is very bold and very well made! The plasterwork on and around the ceilings blows my mind! Very old and intricate elevator or lift. Beautiful ironwork. Early 1900s or late 1800s. The fireplaces are magnificent all on their own. Fantastic glass work as well. Those pieces of the ceiling that has turned to dust might be asbestos, it was used extensively in buildings and institutions to guard against fires running wild and killing large numbers of people. In places this institution has a large case of RISING DAMP. By now you should know better than to look into toilet bowls!

Well that was a nice example of old craftsmanship that place, sadly now it is: oh dear how sad, nevermind. been painting places like that in the netherlands here, and it is sad too see them rot away.

such a shame to see a beautiful building like this. would look amazing if it was restored. the massive fireplace in the basement would have been the original kitchen. the room has been divided up

I think contractors need to remove as much as possible to preserve what is remaining of the beautiful architect; it is a crime to allow the decay of such beauty.

At 25:41 I thought the massive fireplace in the small room may actually be a laundry Shute.

Stealing lead off old buildings like that is so crap. Ought to lead to a long jail sentence as the damage it causes would cost so much to fix & causes the building to be lost to us all. Wanton destruction of history.
