Why I'm not in School

- I should be in third year university but instead I'm trying something different. Let me know your thoughts.
My channel will still be mainly technology based and I will still be around the university to hang out with friends. I just wanted to shift my focus from the classroom onto projects that I'm passionate about.The only reason I am able to do this is because of you guys that watch the videos so I really appreciate it. Check out my website for a deeper explanation of what I want to learn.

What was I coding? Most of what you saw was the backend of my website which includes:
- JWT authentication server (backed by dotnet identity)
- hangfire background processing server
- mailing server
- mysql database
This means I already have the infrastructure in place to secure other microservices (with jwt), write background tasks for mysql database (hangfire), and send emails. This provides a good foundation for any future applications I want to develop. The front end is written in Next js + React. All services are deployed in containers on a kubernetes cluster (my first time doing this!). Read the software page on my website more detail on the technology stack.

@@Rugg-qk4pl I don't know what shit universities you guys went to, but our CS program was great. Ended up graduating with 1 year of paid work experience and companies like Google, EA, Amazon, etc hired us for CO-OP (paid internships) all the time, and it wasn't even close to being a top university. Sure, some of the courses were theoretical and never used much like discrete mathematics, but that's because there's a difference between CS and programming.

@@seancarroll4818 Yeah there are thousands of tutorials out there . I know that . But the way he learns stuff from simply documentation is amazing. I would like to see him explain stuff since " only people who understand can make others understood " (rm -r "grammatical errors")xD.
I dont think that's his strength.
It's one thing to be able to gain an understanding of something super specific on your own and be able to explain that one specific thing well enough that people can share the "Ah ha!" moment, but it's an entirely different domain to make full, scripted, comprehensive tutorials about *all* foundational concepts in a way that people understand.
I really enjoy the content he puts out now. He's doing his thing, he's entertaining, and his drive is really motivational. I always get a spark of inspiration to dive head-first into something when he drops a new video.
If he wants to then great, but I cant say I'd be excited at the idea of him dropping full fledged guides over what he's already formed his channel around

I just studied computer science and worked on programming. I am back in school but have an interview at facebook on the 28th for this upcoming summer. So don't let people tell you that you need to learn in school to get a good computer science job it is not true. I still attend community college

He's now fully focused on content/projects, it would be awesome if he could stream whole process of starting from scratch, learning... And then you have everyhing put together like a highligh in one awesome video for youtube, like he already does. I'm sure community would love streams. But yeah, you are right, chat might be distraction, but also, you have many streamers that do all kind of development on twitch, without being distracted much with chat. Computer Engineering wont need you to learn extensive programming. Comp Sci would.

Massive respect to you for pursuing this. I was in a similar situation a few years back and decided to just stick it out with university and regret it to some degree. Granted I do have a really solid job in software engineering now, but I mostly felt like anything major related at my university I could have just as easily if not more easily taught myself. All the best to you, and make sure you commit to this fully for the duration of this new venture.
It’s good to have some degree, you can finish the college and keep work with you project.

Getting more than one monitor is so satisfying at first, but sometimes it can be a little bit overkill

This is a great question! I'd be very interested in the process for synthesizing information from so many platforms, as well How do you manage the complexity and get results for specific tasks even BEFORE knowing everything about a given technology?

Yo man as someone who is young working in the (20 and have been working since 16). No one cares what you look like. Just put the effort in and be honest with the people you work with. Focus on getting better and better every day, watch online tutorials ( angelsix is a great teacher for c# ), work on personal projects and in a couple of months youll get the hang of it and give it a few years and you would have put in over 10k hours and will be a master

Dumb question: but how does one take it to the next level? From coding with simple nested loops and such to stuff like Devon is doing?
It's a full stack message type application, covers a simple database, and front end server communication. All in JavaScript:)
A good way to take it to that next level is to start looking at creating real world applications that actually serve a purpose. It's really important to learn all those basics like loops, arrays, functions, etc first individually because those are what you're gonna be using later when creating these big programs. But at the same time don't expect to know exactly how to code these huge programs like what Devon is doing. Big programs should be a learning process. If you pay attention to the timelapses Devon does when he's programming you see stack overflow on the screen because he's searching up something he doesn't know

You can always work on projects later in life. Why leave in the middle of school? This is the time that they really start hammering down for CS/engineering majors.
Teaching yourself and learning in the way he's learning teaches you more just what the classes will teach you. Definitely helpful later in life.
Jadwin I think college for CS/Engineering can be a bit hit or miss, I mean I went to school for CS for one year and had to drop out for financial reasons. Taught myself C#, VBA, Python, HTML, CSS, JS, etc. And I landed a job at a university as a Junior Software dev just a few months after dropping out due to a strong work ethic. A degree doesn't guarantee much if you don't have experience, but it really can help get your foot in the door of a job.

@@sioonhho A CS degree is not a programming degree. A CS degree shouldn't be about teaching you some random programming languages, but about the actual theory of computer science, which does involve programming, but it's not the end goal.

Well for some people it takes longer and he probably didnt know all the technologies in and out. But I think its kinda overkill to do such a simple site in Microservices. Maybe he does it more for learning that it actually being really usefull.

@@StudiosJJay ok, so will working on actual projects at school with group mates over 4 years, having a decent GPA, learning from prestigious teachers, and joining extracurricular clubs that can give you real work experience. Not to mention co-op placements and all the other learning resources. Everything can be demonstrated on a resume, it's how you frame it.
Whatever reservations you might have about university, if all things are equal and the only difference is that one person went to university and the other didn't, who are you hiring?
@@Street0yster tech companies have always looked where others have not when it comes to it's participants. There are certain careers that are quite difficult to be competent on without a degree, such as Chemical or mechanical engineering, Law, Medical stuff, though not impossible it is considerably harder to be self thought in such disciplines due to their nature and learning costs. (Not everyone has access to a CNC machine and metals to practice with, an expensive lab set and you FOR SURE cannot be an attorney if you are not officialy certified by your state and it is nearly impossible to get a corpse to practice surgety by yourself). Tech on the other hand, specially software engineering is a skill that requires logical and critical thinking, and then the ability to tell the machine how to take abstract ideas in some language it undertands, and actually do stuff with them. Both skills are very easily developed, and the tools needed are retatively inexpensive. Nowadays i'm almost certain that at least 95% of people have access to computers with internet connection, whether they own them or not, public libraries as well (if books cannot be afforded). They can grow the same skillset as recently college graduate because most of his classes are based on the same books that can be aquired by anyone interested in learning the topics. Although, it may take a bit more of effort and time to be a self thaught programmer, it is completely feasible to become a professional developer. Look a it this way: college is the easy (yet expensive) way in to the IT world or any career really. I've seen self learners crush people with a bachelor's degree on coding contests, both in experience and logical thought process. Therefore, the idea that a college degree will get you a job in a snap, especially in IT realted fields, is as archaic and idiotic as to think that you can become a millionaire by taking a loan and not investing it but rather spend it ilke there is no tomorrow.
@@edwinontiveros8701 See I never argued the feasibility of self teaching (I'm actually self-teaching myself pandas and NumPy for data analytics to enhance my skillset as an analyst), so you bringing it up is pointless to say the least. Your argument hinges on the fact that people *could* teach themselves these skills, but what is the likelihood that they *will* teach themselves all the skills they would learn in University. There's nothing holding you accountable and no one to give you feedback or help identify common bad practice in programming.
Sure, you've seen self-learners crush bachelor's degrees in coding contests, but that's completely anecdotal and doesn't prove a trend. The self taught programmers at the companies I've worked at weren't as good as the formally educated ones which counters your point, but is anecdotal as well. Logically, I would say that the average formally taught programmer is more competent than the average self-taught programmer because they have had the oppourtunity to garner more professional experiences commonly encountered situations in industry on top of their educational experiences. For every Mark Zuckerburg, there's thousands of average joes.
I also never said that a degree would give you a job instantly, but it provides evidence of commitment and education, whereas self-teaching is much more ambiguous when it comes to credentials. Again I reiterate, given two identical candidates with the only difference being education, which one is the logical hire?

Please keep teaching and learning. One thing that gave me lots of work experience is making projects like you are doing. I gave talks for freecodecamp in my local area, and read every medium article I could find.

Dig the fuck in man I've been watching your videos for a bit and watching how you teach yourself and just solve problems and you've just got a good mindset for all this shit. I'm working full time doing like enterprise level web development and Devops engineering and I just finished building our new cluster infrastructure with kubernetes. If you keep going as you're going you'll easily be able to do whatever you want to do, especially in regards to a career.

I'm so glad I found Devon's videos. He's inspired me to just do as many side projects involving programming as possible and building a portfolio on Github. I'm a Junior in college right now and I've been worried about being less impressive on internship applications as other people and so these videos motivating me to do more than I've done in the past has helped get a big boost in confidence about being a CS major.
