Novablast 3/4, Saucony Triumph 20/21 and Kayano 30/31 got my vote. These are "relatively" cheaper than other model you suggested for LSD. For speed workout and goal marathon pace long run training I use my old plated racer. I couldn't resist the temptation to try out the new plated racer so I always have one pair which only log 100km on it.
I'm training for my first marathon (it's in 3 weeks) and my long run shoe is the Asics Nimbus, which I use for most of my easy runs as well. I use the Superblast (v1) for the runs that are on the faster side like tempo and threshold runs. The marathon itself will be run in the Metaspeed Edge Paris and I just did a 31km run with them yesterday to have them fully broken in before the race. I was quite surprised how well they behave in wet conditions (unlike the Superblast v1). Yeah, I also have a few non-Asics (Hoka, Adidas and Nike), but I decided to stick to Asics for my marathon training.

I recently wore rhem on a relatively warm ( for Ireland! ) 28k and found them really warm for the the last hour or so. Ive never noticed the same problem in the novablasts. Another thing about the novablasts, unless you need them immediately, the nb4 will probably be shortly making its way to the asics outlet, or at least i picked up a couple of pairs of the NB3 in November 23 on the outlet when they were just over a year old, NB4 are creeping up on that now
I have the Novablast 4TR ,Superblast 2 and NB Rebel V4. Use the Nova for any easy run especially over winter and raining. SB2 for everything else and sometimes my Rebel V4 for anything under 10K and quick plus treadmill. I agree Ben, it’s hard to stop picking up the Superblast 2 every time 😂 Got another pair on way as back up 👍

I think we're all now a victim of marketing nonsense. A couple of years ago, trainers we now call normal were considering max stack. I think running long in anything around 25-30mm+ is absolutely fine. There's enough data now confirming bigger stack heights cause you to put more pressure through your legs so brands have to try combat this whilst doing something different to sell shoes. I suspect brands will soon start dropping stack heights telling us its gentler on the legs.
Valid points there I considered my 25 mm heel stack quite cushioned back in 2017 when I started running and used new balance 1400 and 1500 models for my long runs and Pegasus 35 for marathons 😆 more stack causes fatigue and stability issues when cornering imo
Too many variables, honestly. I agree a huge part of what trends are in are all marketing (Harry Kane is making kids get Sketchers boots now), but in regards to max stack heights being normal, you also have to consider the materials and designs from, say 5 years ago, to now. There's also the variables of runner height, weight, stride, leg length, etc.
Stack really isn't that important, it matters but so does the materials and design. They also changed how it's measured, some companies used to only lk Ijst the height of the midsole foam where as others included the outsole and in sole.
my experience says differently, with max cushion shoe, I don't get pain in the joints the day after, and so I can run everyday, whatever training I do: I ran 17km yesterday in my Magnify Nitro 2, and my legs are absolutely fine: it would have been much different in my deviate. everybody is different, some people run without shoes without any problem, but they worked a lot on body reinforcement: I guess that is the key. I cycle a lot, I have good stamina, but before max cushion shoes, I would hurt myself running way before being tired. it is not a problem anymore, now you can run as much as you want without any pain, even if you are not a dedicated runner.
Puma velocity nitro 3 is a good pick but if you shop around you can get the magnify Nitro 2 which is great for long runs and a bit better than the velocity.
@@jlhuk52 good shoe for sure. Very protected and comfortable running.. My only criticism would be that they run a tad long to size and could have saved a little weight on the upper and the thickness of the puma grip. Great for the price you can get them at tho and should go 500 miles

Can’t comment on the Superblast 2 but definitely like version 1 which I do have, and they are great for a heavy runner at any speed. Not sure I want to try version 2 if they are softer. I did one 5km run in the Hoka SkywardX and they killed my feet and Achilles as they had to overwork due to how unstable they are. Enjoy running in my NB SC Trainer V3 however my knees ache afterwards, I don’t think they are stable enough. I took out my Speed 3’s which I’ve not ran in for months and preferred them to SC V3. Also loving the Hurricane 24 right now. And don’t know why I don’t use them more often but I would Boston 12 are my overall favourite for long runs as heavy runner. I would of course expect shoes to be different when I lose weight.
Hi Ben, even if I love your videos and they helped me a lot to choose my 2 new pairs of shoes, I really miss one detail you don't talk about : for which Runner weight does the shoes fit ? I mean, there's a lot of shoes you've tested that I loved but discovered that it was suitable for light runners (less than 75 or 85 kg). And for big runners as me (100kg) it could help a lot to have this information. Im following your 10k training as well and for the moment it's great. Thank you !
I am a heavy runner (110 kg) and I tried the Novablast 4's a couple weeks. Do not recommend at all. It was comfortable the first 2-3 kms each run but after that the forefoot felt like there were three pressure points because of the "holes" in the foam.
I like my pair as well. I also got the Brooks Hyperion Max for a marathon but I find them not so stable in curves, and they annoy me when the road is slanted.
@@AckerQ. The Hyperion max doesn't have a plate and if you land fairly hard right at the back it can be quite unstable, I really like it for slightly quicker stuff where I'm only putting weight through my mid foot
shoes depends a lot of the runner weight, a marathon shoes for elite can become a speed shoe for a 80kg average runner. It should be nice to talk about softness of foam
Oh man, I love my Puma Velocity Nitro 3 and even that the shoes are narrow and I overpronate, they work marvelously to me. In the next Black Friday I will see if I can get a different colorway of the Velocity to replace my old pair. The Nova Blast in the other hand, I did not like them that much. Too much hype and the Velocity 3 is a 9.5 out of 10 to me while the NB is a 7.5 /10 . Any other cushioning shoes from Asics are better then the NB4 . Not to mention, the grip of the NB4 can be bad even in a dry and clean ground ...
I just got Novablast 4 and have only had them on feet inside and have to say they feel considerably less bouncy than version 3 when they were new. I still remember walking and jumping in the 3 and how bouncy they felt on the same floor, now they have almost 1000km of running and I replaced them with 4. Has anyone noticed much difference between 3 and 4?
I start your intermediate 10k plan soon then marathon plan in January. Before I start I'm going to do a 17 mile run. I planned on using my magmax as it's a steady run. You have mad me question my choice now 😅
I'd add (at least) Reebok Floatride Energy Symmetros to the list, the model specially designed for long runs. Some .ON Running models are good, too, and especially good on hilly terrain.
We did want to include a Reebok shoe on the list, but the availability of the shoes was never great when we kept checking.. low stock in most places etc. But if you can get them then they are always a good option!
I haven't worn them but have the Hyperion max which I think is same foam. It feels rock hard when you first put it on but it's actually really nice to run in, really softens up under load.
As below have said, Triumph 21 is a great Long run shoe and can get a bit cheaper now, esp if you go for the 20 which is almost the same. The new Saucony Hurricane seems to be getting great reviews too, be good to see you try that one?
Great list. Saucony Tempus and Puma Magmax are also great options. I wonder how the NB Balos holds up on long runs. I do like my Superblast 2 although I prefer softer foams such as PwrrunPb hence thinking to pick up a pair of Balos when it gets discounted.
Hey Ben! I’m absolutely loving the videos. I am on a budget and am thinking about two shoes. Do you think the Pegasus 41 is better or the adidas adizero sl2 is better?
Hi Ben. Thanks for the video. Have you tested NB SuperComp Elite v4 vs SuperComp Trainer v3 ? ... in the market for a new long run shoe for upcoming training block for spring marathon and given UK pricing on trainer v3, maybe elite v4 better investment? Wondering if they are too firm as my legs appreciate the cushioning (currently in Nike Invincible3s) but if not much diff between them, ok option. Thanks for any tips.
Weirdly, I can’t stand the Novablast 4s for easy stuff, but love them for my speed workouts. Maybe it’s that I heel strike a bit more the slower I go, but the heel to toe transition feels weird going slower. But I would race in them if I didn’t have carbon shoes.
SC Trainer is so horrible expensive in Europe (Germany) I got lots of shoes but dont see the point of spending 250€ (what is a race shoe price for me) for a trainer.

You have mad me question my choice now 😅
How's the Superblast 2 compared to the Nimbus 26 in terms of midsole softness?
PS: Well done in Berlin!!
Glad this game up, I’m looking to get some new shoes
I wonder how Balos would fit into this mix
I love these shoe videos that are very informative. you should try to make a video about altar running shoes.
New Balance 1080 for me ❤
Can you please do similar comparison for long-run shoes starting as low as 50€?
I'm still running on the Novablast 3. Looking to get a new shoe and I'm tempted to just get the 4 once it (hopefully) goes on sale sometime soon.
Team Puma ❤
What about the new balance v more 5 ?? Love them 😍
I'd add (at least) Reebok Floatride Energy Symmetros to the list, the model specially designed for long runs. Some .ON Running models are good, too, and especially good on hilly terrain.
We did want to include a Reebok shoe on the list, but the availability of the shoes was never great when we kept checking.. low stock in most places etc. But if you can get them then they are always a good option!
What are your thoughts on the new balance more v5??
I would have recommended the Puma Magnify Nitro 2 instead of the Velocity Nitro 3. Full 39mm of Nitro foam and everywhere on discount
Great video…. Any thoughts on the Asics Gel Nimbus 26? It seems to have fallen by the wayside.
Have you ever reviewed Craft shoes?
How many miles / kilometres do they usually last? When do you throw them away, can you make a video about durability?
Superblasts just keep my feet and legs comfy during and after ❤
Yeah it may feel firm, but it's so protective.
Is the ghost max 2 softer than v1? That one felt so hard and firm when putting on right away!
I haven't worn them but have the Hyperion max which I think is same foam. It feels rock hard when you first put it on but it's actually really nice to run in, really softens up under load.
Saucony Triumph 22. Pricey, looks great in Orange and gives my dodgy Achilles the easiest ride of any of my shoes.
For 80 Kg, what's your advice for long distance train ...
As below have said, Triumph 21 is a great Long run shoe and can get a bit cheaper now, esp if you go for the 20 which is almost the same. The new Saucony Hurricane seems to be getting great reviews too, be good to see you try that one?
Congrats on Berlin Ben! What shoe did run in? Great vid, Superblast 2 would be nice for sure in my collection.
Have the SC Trainer v3, one complaint is that it needs to be gotten in half a size larger
What do you think of Under Armour Hovr as a budget option?
Please make a video on what shoes to invest in for plantar fasciitis patients like us. Please please please. Thank you
You have P F?
How about the Saucony hurricanes?
Great list. Saucony Tempus and Puma Magmax are also great options. I wonder how the NB Balos holds up on long runs. I do like my Superblast 2 although I prefer softer foams such as PwrrunPb hence thinking to pick up a pair of Balos when it gets discounted.
Can you review the brooks glycerin max
got vn3 in mid year with 35%+20% disc🥰
Do you have recommendation for my son? He's 13 years old, very skinny and running mostly 1500m
…well, I have 2 of the 3. makes sense as I am gearing up to my first 50 miler.., and possibly a 100K soon..
great video as always
Magnify nitro 2 should have been on the list instead of the Velocity Nitros: you can get them from 50€ to 100€ nowadays.
Are they any good for ultramarathons?
Hi, can you explain what do you mean by 1/2 size down in Asics
If you wear size 10.5(US) then get a 9.5 it would be exactly a 1/2 size down If up then 10.5. Understand?
Thank you. Understood.
Hey Ben! I’m absolutely loving the videos. I am on a budget and am thinking about two shoes. Do you think the Pegasus 41 is better or the adidas adizero sl2 is better?
SL2 edges the ancient Pegasus not that the Nike is a bad shoe.
BTW what is the distance of your long run to be called it long run?
Just picked up a pair of superblast 2’s in Japan for 135 pounds! Unbelievable
Adidas adizero sl?
Weirdly, I can’t stand the Novablast 4s for easy stuff, but love them for my speed workouts. Maybe it’s that I heel strike a bit more the slower I go, but the heel to toe transition feels weird going slower. But I would race in them if I didn’t have carbon shoes.
I like Brooks Glycerin.
Ben, any tips or suggestions for that inner thigh chafing. I like to wear shorter shorts when running, but my inner thighs aren’t built for it 😮
Body glide
I used Hoka one one clifton. 1200km:-)
Can you give us an insight what your general paces are? You mention marathon pace, but that could be 4min/km or 6:30min/km 😅
Glycerin max?
New Balance designs win coming from a designer's eye.
Hi Ben. Can you review On Running Shoes their latest Cloudboom strike. Thanks and More power
SC Trainer is so horrible expensive in Europe (Germany)
I got lots of shoes but dont see the point of spending 250€ (what is a race shoe price for me) for a trainer.
Saucony Triumph for me
You missed out the Saucony Triumph!
No he didn't! Lol
Not the max, happy with 20, 21, but the Max? I haven’t run in it, but don’t like the looks and some of the reviews
The 20 or 21 on sale is a steal (same with the Glycerin 20 honestly, kind of a similar shoe to the 2022-2023 Triumph)
**brickkk cough**
@@georgesoto5436Max? That's not a thing?
Nice video, nice t-shirt! you wear
