- A short video giving you quick and easy tips on how to use Inktense Blocks. The video covers using the block on it's side to cover large areas, using the side of the block as a pan of paint, splattering, using paint from the Grate 'n' Shake and other great techniques. Running time approx. 9 minutes.
Does it matter that the result is not professional? Most of us are not and she is doing a demonstration on how do use a product...very helpful. If our work had to be fabulous all the time, none of us would create. The point is to enjoy yourself
I just purchased 2 packs of the inktense pencils and 2 packs of the inktense blocks on ebay. (I paid less than $20 for all 4, Great deal) I have been wondering exactly what to do with the blocks. I bought them to use in my art journaling. This tutorial was very helpful. Thanks for posting. You were a pleasure to watch. :)
Just got a set of 72 and have the pencils on the way. Played around with them yesterday and loved the vibrant colors and ease of use. They are amazing! Thanks for the demos to give me some ideas. Yesterday was just a test run and I'm loving what I can do with these!
I just bought these today! Needed to see this video😊😊😊
Excellent demo! What a versatile medium! I’ll be using my set of 72 Inktense Blocks.
Glad you enjoyed this video. We would love to see what you could create with our Inktense Blocks. Best, Derwent
I purchased the product under the recommendation of Susan Moss Jenkins from Monet Cafe. Her RUclips tutorial convinced me to buy the product. Susan is great!
I bought the blocks and I am thrilled with the way they perform! I was not very familiar with Derwent products, but thanks to Bunny Design's videos I started buying first the coloured pencils, then the pastel pencils, and now the Inktense! :)) I am really a happy customer...
That's great to hear Marija! Thank you for commenting.
Your sound effects 😁 .... nice demo, thanks!
Fabulous video. I can't wait to get these thank you for all the ideas. I have some inexpensive watercolor colored pencils but I'm ready for more fun. 👍🏼
I definetly NEED those blocks! Awesome product!
Love all these tutorials. Thank you for the ideas and the guidance, and the inspiration.
thank you, what a great video and very nice presenter.
Very nice demonstration! Thank you so much. New in the art quilt world and to the pencils.
Super diverse product!
I've just started using these for toy theatre scenery. The colours are indeed intense especially when watercolour is too weak. It takes a bit of practice before you can get beyond the "happy accident" stage.
Very nice demo
I NEED this! ... going to add it to my Amazon wishlist ;).
I just got the Inktense Blocks and I had the Inktense Pencils for a long time. Well the blocks are so much more opaque then the pencils, when I take the color pigment off of the tip of the pencil particularly the darker colors with a wet brush they just lays down much more smoother than the blocks, The blocks tends to get grainy especially when you don’t use enough much water. I think the pencils are made a little different from the blocks the pencils must be wax based because if I touch the tip of the pencil with my finger I get no color pigment on my fingers tips.
Hi Raymond, thanks for your comment. We are glad you like our Inktense products. Best, Derwent
@@derwent I was a little disappointed with the blocks. I think the best way to use the blocks to get a nice good smooth texture is to add some water in a palette then put the color pigment in the water that way you get a nice good smooth texture but the colors won't be as bright and vibrant. I think it would be nice if the blocks were semi moist.
Just got these and the intense pencils. I'm so excited to try them out! :D
Wow this product looks fantastic. I knew the inktense pencils but not the blocks before now.
I have no idea where I can find then In Vancouver (Canada).
So the paint dries permanent. How does that work if you paint straight from the block would it then have a layer of permanent pigment?
If you activate the pigment fully with water and then let it dry, it will be permanent. Best, Derwent
This tutorial was amazing - WOW!!! I just love these Derwent blocks, they're incredible. Sorry about all the gushing over these, you did a great job of showing us how to use them and your painting with the buildings, where you used that purple colour to fill in the sky is so gorgeous. Just like the name says! Do you ever use the Derwent Inktense Pencils with the blocks? I saw another video where the artist used both, but, from the look of your painting, it doesn't seem that necessary, because you've drawn in the details with the blocks alone. Thank you for all the tips and tricks. Oh, BTW, can you use these blocks on fabric, like you can with the Inktense Pencils? Love from Amanda inside Melbourne, Australia ❤❤❤
Thanks for the love Amanda! You can use the products separately or mix pencils, blocks and paints together for a variety of different effects. Try for yourself and see what you can create! Best, Derwent
This will be very ideal for oriental art on bamboo paper, grinding an ink stick on an ink slab.
Great video for me. Two questions: where do I order the grater/shaker and the wrap you used on the block? I have not been able to find either anywhere, including amazon OR Derwent!!! Thank you for this video.
Hi there, we no longer sell these products unfortunately, so you will have to search for graters and block grips from other brands/sources. Best, Derwent
Hi there can I use the blocks in mixed media work, for example with acrylics? Thank you.
Wow!!! I have GOT to get me some of these
If the ink that is dried on the paper is permanent and can't be reblended, but can be layered... Does this mean that when you wet the block or pencil directly, when that part of the block or pencil dries it will have a fine layer of unblendable residue on it?
Is this noticeable when you next use the blocks or pencils?
Should you give the pencils a light sharpen before use if you've wet the point?
+O2BSoLucky yes! they dry and the under layer doesnt move
People who buy these blocks should demand some quality control. I bought a 24 set and the blocks varied in size noticeably
I made a color chart .after it was dry I took a damp brush and went across the lines and they lifted so I tried in on my pencils chart that I did almost a tear ago they also lifted so how are they permanent.
Hi @donnamcneil6748, it is essential that all the pigment has been diluted or else the wash will not be permanent. The important thing to remember is that it needs to be a light wash. Hope this helps. Best, Derwent
Do you need to prewet the paper when doing the sky wash??
Hi Gwen, you don't need to.
Here we dissolved some of the Inktense Block into a pot of water and used that straight onto the paper. You can pre-wet the paper for a lighter wash or different effects, but here it was dry.
Hope that helps.
Best, Derwent
You can visit our website pencils.co.uk to find full information on where to buy our products.
The paper used in this video is the Derwent Watercolour paper pads. The surface is smooth rather than with a tooth and has been designed exclusively for us for use with our watersoluble products.
I THINK I LIKE THESE WITH MY AIRBRUSH YOU KNOW WITH A DROPPER PRETTY COOL
My sis went through a breakup recently and I'm making a piece for her with these
Dear Infinity Loop, we are sorry to hear that but we are glad we can be part of bringing her some happiness and good wishes. Best, Derwent
Wow thanks derwent I made her a nice rose. She loved it
Are these blocks suitable for use on fabric?
I have baskets of pencils, crayons, etc...all except charcoal and pastels I just quit using after I realized how easy 2-g0-sketch painting is. These are more like paints to me however...they are so powerful I've not exploited them near enough yet.
The subtitles on this video are interesting to say the least
Can they be used in Canvas?
idont undestand . much about paint but can thesebess good as watercolours?
I'm new at this. If I use these on fabric (white cotton sateen), do I use a fabric medium before I paint or after? I don't know what a medium is for. Do I even need to use one to prevent bleeding? Can someone help me?
Ok so I bought the pencils and a small set of blocks after watching numerous videos and knew I would love this product. I tried the small set of blocks and loved it so I went and bought the set of 36 blocks and man was this disappointing. I think there’s definitely an issue with this set, comparing the same colors from the small set the colors are definitely not vibrant as the small set of blocks. As for the drying permanent, this seems to be an issue as the colors definitely lift even after leaving it to dry overnight to make sure it’s dry. Sadly I sent a few emails to derwent explaining the problem I have and am yet to receive an answer. Has anyone else experienced this?
Hi Mickey, thank you for your comment.
There could be a slight variation in the colours between the two formulations - pencils and blocks, but they should be very similar. Are you saying that the colours that you have in the 12 tin that are also in the 36 tin have inconsistencies? It could be to do with being from different batches but the colours should still be the same.
In regards to the permanence, the pigment needs to be fully dissolved then left to completely dry for it not to move.
Hope this helps!
Best, Derwent
@@derwent Hi. Thx so much for getting back to me. I’ve sent 3 emails directly to derwent and had no reply. I bought the pencils and blocks to use together. I love the colours. But I only bought a small set of 12 blocks initially. Because I liked to colour so much I bought the set of 36 blocks. The colours from the tin of 12 and the tin of 36 blocks are definitely not similar. Colour are much less vibrant in the bigger set. I use watercolor paper 300 gsm and watercolor brushes. I’m so sad and disappointed about this. I’m not sure why this is happening. I treat both sets the same and have very different results. Like I said earlier, I watched so many videos to make sure I use it correctly. If you like I can do a swatch of the colours tomorrow and send it to you. I saw how Lisa went with pencils over the blocks once dry. No movement. I did it and the colour lifts like even takes the colour away almost to the white of the paper again. Thx again and looking forward to solving this mystery.
May I ask what paper you used.
Hi Ann,
It was our Watercolour paper: www.derwentart.com/en-gb/c/professional-products/paper?f=1399:watercolour%20pad.
But our Inktense paper will also work: www.derwentart.com/en-gb/c/professional-products/paper?f=1399:inktense.
Best,
Derwent
Where do you get the Grate and Shake jars?
Hi unfortunately, we no longer sell these tools, so you will have to search online for either ours or alternatives. Apologies we couldn't help. Best, Derwent
Apa ada tutorial gambar di atas kain kanvas putih, dengan pake DERWENT block inktense ❓
Hi there, we don't on our channel but I am sure there will be some if you search RUclips. Best, Derwent
What kind of paper (or whatever ) do you use with inktense blocks?
a good watercolor paper from what Ive heard so far
I’m late but 300 gsm is really good
I have the pencils I have got to get the blocks .
Gotta gotta have 'em
Where did you get the paper pad?
what store can I find these in?
AWESOME! Thank you!
What paper is taht
once my color dries and I apply another layer of watercolor pencil over instead of staying permanent it comes up off the paper I am very unhappy with this product
Hi Heather, Sorry to hear that. The really important thing with Inktense is to make sure the pigment is 100% dissolved in water when you apply it to the paper. Once dried it will then be permanent. Let me know how you get on.
Thank you for responding. I tried contacting Derwent on FB when I first bought the product but no one ever responded. My colors dry rather dull and tend to be quite crumbly. Is it possible I just bought an old package and they have dried out? I will let you know how my attempts with the product works out!
Great, thanks. the pigment should be bright and opaque. Keep me posted!
Hi Heather, The essential thing with Inktense is that the pigment is completely dissolved in water. Once this dries it will form a permanent layer on which you can do other layers. You can use a water spray or brush to mix it and then leave to dry. I would do some test blocks on a piece of paper first. Hope that helps. It's a great product and you can achieve some really neat effects!
Is that Stratmore paper? :O
Bought a set of 24, opened them to swatch, & they ruined my swatch colour book, they were full of grim so I swatched them dry on my swatch squares & got the dirt with them, on wetting the colours were all grubby! So disappointing!
Please contact our Customer Service if you bought directly from our website, or please contact the Customer Service team for where you purchased the set from, so they can look into this. Best, Derwent
@@derwent They were purchased from Amazon as I don’t live in UK! We wrote a reclamation, sent them back & as I own Derwent Aquarell pencils( purchased from an art shop ), & like them, & recommend them always! Was excited to use Derwent blocks, so was extremely disappointed by there swatching! As, you may realise. Look forward to my next delivery & hope they will be clean enough to use! Thanks for your reply!
@@valeriegehling4358 fingers crossed that the next delivery is the one! We are sorry to hear the first set of blocks were not up to standard.
@@derwent They were re- delivered. They were not only dirty ( I cleaned them all, & the tray before using ), which again caused a mixture of colours again with swatching but, one was split. I have kept them, was very disappointed! And, won‘t recommend them for purchase. I‘ve purchased Derwent watercolour pencils, & use them & recommended them, I use & recommend Schmincke Aquarell paints, & Hahnemuehle Aquarell paper. Was hoping to purchase Derwent Inktense watercolour pencils, will leave that now & purchase CaranD’Ache. And, hoped to purchase the XL Inktense blocks but, won’t now to avoid disappointment!
As a solution:? Is it possible that the plastic cover that seals the Inktense blocks attracts static dust( small colour molecules from blocks ) that settles in the trays & during storage/ delivery travels & settles on the blocks, could a thin paper coat prevent this? This problem must be solvable. Such a shame, especially if like me, the purchaser was waiting expectantly for them, then disappointed!
@@valeriegehling4358 thank you for your feedback. We will look into this. Best, Derwent
These inktense blocks are my favorites. I have a video how I use them in my art. Here is a link ruclips.net/video/yPxugfcG8h8/видео.html
thanks for the great review Conny!
I bought this product, Inktense block, and I hate it. Didnt like how it dry, the granulation when I use them like watercolor, the wash made with it is absolutly terrible. The pigment didnt dispersing well, the finition is ugly and like I see, its the same thing with your painter in this video. This product dont worth the Price. Water or alcool, nothing mix with it works well. Since, I lost the purchase proof, but If I had it, I go to a refund. Dont sell this product, don’t but it, that’s not worth the Price.
Hi Manon, we are sorry that you are unhappy with this product. Every artist has a different preference and techniques, so we hope you can find a way to enjoy these blocks. Best, Derwent
Love the pencils. Now I need a to get me some of these blocks! I also think it would benefit the sale of your product if you had someone who demonstrated properly how to use these and not how a 5 year old would. A five year old wouldn't use these first of all so have them demonstrated in a way a serious creator would use them. Maybe I'm being to nit picky but hey...
Thanks for your feedback. We are always doing new video content so thanks for the suggestion. Watch this space! Hope you enjoy using the blocks!
why do they use a terrible painter to promote their products? ?
+sue lee good question.
The product is terrible 😅
