John, Nice work. You can tell you have been a mechanic for a while. You know what to do and make the job look simple. I would need a manual to explain which bolts to take out, etc. Thanks for the video! Have a good one! Dave
Hi, you know I've been a subscriber of yours for a fair bit now but this series on car repairs is the best I've come across. Ditch the Haynes AND the delia smith books. Cheers mate
well i expected a repair but by the time you buy parts the time ti strip them down and rebuild them you have passed the cost of a new caliper plus you might strip it and find scoring then you need a new part anyway so i think his judgement call was spot on at least he can sleep at night knowing the job was done properly and has is customers safety in his thoughts well done mate.
Nice work there. Always like the way you let slip in the little word B whenever something goes slightly wrong. You have to love French design, they must all have small hands and incredibly long and strong fingers, from the way that bolts and such are located deep in recesses where big hands do not fit. Like the tip there for the pipe stopper as well, as well as the brake shoe retractor tool. Agree on the need for regular brake fluid changing as well, it causes problems.
I always replace in pairs They are not that expensive In case you get problems the warranty claim would be simpler It is possible that uneven braking could happen until the new disc "beds In"
doubleboost Thanks John, I assumed that because you hadn't mentioned replacing the second one on the Megane that you weren't going to do so - especially as you said the disc with integral bearing for the Megane was an expensive item. All the best to you and Debs. Richard
MY CAR MEGANE MK2 2008 I HAVE A KIK IN GEAR BOX WHEN CAR COLD.I HAVE CHANGE THE SOLDOID VALVE IT CAME BACK THE KIK.I HAVE CHANGED THE GEAR OIL FOR NEW WHAT I SHOULD DO NEXT
A good and cheap way to avoid problems with handbrake is to drill a hole in to the axle the lever is rotating on. Fill the hole with rustremover after thread taping and then screw in a greasniple and pump grease until it start to leak out under the rubber seal. Make sure to use greas that don't gets to stiff when cold! Also make sure the wires don't have anything but smooth long bends in them and spray rustremover in to the ends and put som marine grease under the rubber seals. Som say som types of greas can degrade the seals and boots. But I have not noticed any problem under +10years use of propshaft grease.I had to reroute the cable outside one mount and did bend the mount on the other side to get the kinks out. I suspect the engineer that got the assignment to reduce the life span on parts its the one to blame for the kinks. Is to obvious for it to be related to a normal glitch or to much red wine! 😠
Hi John, is it to expensive to rectify the disk (here in Chile they might offer you that if the disk wear is not to deep) or is it not allowed there by regulation. I have even seen machines (imported ones) that do the rectifying whith the disk still mounted, used when only the brake pads have to be changed and get a "fresh" start surface. Most of the repair shops put a discardable thin plastic sleve over the drivers seat when the car comes into the shop, so there is no risk of staining them. I do not care much about it but it gives probably a good impression for the ladies :-) Nice video!
After a disc has been worn or turned beyond specification, they may "look" fine, but they are too thin to "hold" breaking heat. There is not enough mass (metal material) to absorb the heat from breaking the (weight x speed = energy/heat) car.
My handbrake lever button broke, and i was looking for vids where someone replaces the lever (it's in a very ugly state, anyway, better to put a new one on). Anyway, you work so good that i watched the vid, even when it wasnt related to my search, LOL. BTW, what is that thing that sticks up behind the battery? I've noticed that it does a very ugly sound for some time after i turn off the engine.
i remember the old Renault's when you could fill the brake fluid up open all the bleed nipples grab a quick cuppa or a smoke come back lock the nipples of and the brakes were bled. the old Renault 4.5.12.14 i used to look after you could gravity bleed all of them. an old Renault 4 i used to look after which was shipped from south Africa for some reason there was no oil filter on that car not even a place machined into the block also the air filter was the old oil filled ones
that is an actual changing parts, not a repair for the parkingbrake. I have expected a repair of the calipers or the handbrake cables and the handle aswell. The Vid is not worth this title
+doubleboost I didnt had a functional camera as I did this operation yesterday. I just said for a fix of a rear brake, he could take the caliper apart and try to mend it with a repair kit, which includes also a replacement caliperpiston. its the same fix for any rear brake caliper ( vw, ford etc.)
John,

I would just like to say a big thankyou. The garage I take my car to couldn't locate the OBD port. Thanks to you I have found it.Big thumbs up!!!!!!!!

I like the way you consider people who may work on the car next.

awesome video - loved the real language of car repairs!

great video john brings back memory's
YOU ARE GREAT MECHANIC//SORY FOR POOR ENGLISH.
DID NOT UNDERSTAND ANY OF YOUR ENGLISH BY THE WAY YOU WORK I GOT IT ALL
But the hand.bracke dont have a spring?
You are sharing very good stuff. Thank you.
Is a very small gap after tightening with 220nm normal? Is it normal for the bearing to have this? Very very small slack
hi john thanks for your videos would this be the same for a 2005 cabriolet ??
Tightening with Air gun the rear disc nut?Very professional
When I need to replace the rear brake pads do I need to turn the piston all the way back or just enough to fit the pads?
Hi John, I've always changed discs as axle pairs on my cars as a precaution against uneven braking. Is this a myth? Richard
I always replace in pairs
They are not that expensive

thanks for the video, very clear. have you got one replacing broken cables?
@doubleboost: That would be really helpful :)

Nice video!
We used to machine discs
They have become so cheap it is no longer worth it
Unless they are real specials

No anti seize on that thread ?
what thread
The large nylon locknut on the spindle that holds on the disc-
Hell I see now you spray canned something on there, missed that before.
12345NoNamesLeft
It is not very often that nut is removed some lube would not hurt anything
Thanks for commenting
He applies some light lube at 0:04. Just a little is all you need.
Do you normally work on Saturdays John?
I do one in three
Few torque settings might help cheers good luvk
good video mate keep it up.
Top man fair play buddy
Gordon Ramsay of car mechanic
Great 👍🏼

We still "just let the fluid trickle through" on some vehicles
so its still practiced i thought they would of done away with it by now just goes to show that sometimes the old away are the best way
liked the video very helpful keep at it
Well Done!
Thanks for the video....13
That grease for the hub and lug bolts looked like copper coat. an anti seize.
Copper slip
i think he is an average mechanic not very best. Brake fluid is highly corrosive but he also drop some fluid on the new caliper.
Brake fluid is not at all corrosive
It is hydroscopic
Brake fluid is anti-corrosive! The caliper is filled with it and doesn't corrode as long as you replace it before it expires.
that is an actual changing parts, not a repair for the parkingbrake. I have expected a repair of the calipers or the handbrake cables and the handle aswell. The Vid is not worth this title
+Arnold Kovacs Why not upload some of your vids showing how it should be done
