I'm not sure that beautiful is the word that I most often conjure with Schnittke, and certainly not for this sonata. Cathartic, incredible, magnificent. Profound, majestic, worldly, ...I changed my mind - beautiful.
As a mode of expression, he waited a long time to formally write a Piano Sonata. Absolutely stunning in its dignity and grace. It has the obvious gravitas of Beethoven at the very beginning. The macabre humor of Shostakovich a little later and then turns into a phantasmagoric explosion of modernity that rumbles along until there is nothing left to say. But incredibly he recapitulates the phantasmagoria and it goes round and round like a bulwevil. Dude is a genius.
What a beautiful work - thank you Igor Tchetuev for giving it the space and breadth that it needed in the first movement. A very engaging piece and wonderful performance.
Tchetuev -the pianist really gets this music-its quickly changing moods and utterances.Fabulous interpreter! This is difficult music to make come alive off the page . Brilliant interpreter !!! I would never have guessed that this was Schnittke . Immediately attractive and downright sensible . Makes me think of a more intellectual Ned Rorem less jazzy and florid . This will be my favorite aong with one of the concerti grossi , his 4th violin concerto .I hate to use the category polystylism : but it is true the man could write any idion and in the 20th century that makes sense . I am the same way .His many film scores too show the man had no limits. I am falling in love with this like a less agitate ,cold more personable Boulez . Wonderful , free , tangential easily communicable . This more immediately entrancing than the 3rd sonata will make me work harder to see the 2nd & 3rd pf.Sonatas . He is great in so many ways !!!
Listen it, abolish the surge of noises and images of everyday life in order to open the space of a place where contingency and representation give way to the immateriality of the sensible. Once the door is closed on the agitation of the world, an underlying silence sets in, a slowness seizes, preludes to a dilation of perception and consciousness. The expressive power of the sound architecture breaks with any form of transcription of the real to attach itself to the expression of an elusive universe. The color and rhythm of the composition is a language that gives voice to the exaltation!
Fehlerlose Interpretation dieser minimalistischen und technisch anspruchsvollen Klaviersonate im präzisen Tempo mit klar artikuliertem und durchsichtigem Klang sowie sorgfältig kontrollierter Dynamik. Echt genialer Pianist
you may be right AND there are some very important works from his earlier periods. no one would confuse late brahms with early, but neither would it make sense to ignore the early. schnittkes string quartet 3 ushers in polystylism as an idiom not unlike Beethoven's 3rd symphony crosses the threshold fom classical to romantic.
When does music become noise? When does order/balance/harmony become chaos? When does beauty become shit and wretchedness? When does anything become ART‽

Actually, art doesn't have nothing to do with aesthetics, people mistakenly believes it does. Quoting Schöenberg: "The public must be cured of the delusion that the aim of the artist is to create beauty."
Aesthetics is not necessarily about beauty, but about taste and sensory stimulation from natural and created objects and situations. 'Beauty' is also 'in the eye (and ear) of the beholder' and is often evoked by tragedy or even shock as much as anything else. It is the artists job to do that at least.

I think, the most exact statement about Schnittke's music (unfortunately, do not remember, who did say that): the beautifulness of ugliness
A revelation of pain and beauty. Thanks to God for this composer!
What a complex, rich, introspective artist! Accessible yet challenging work of great depth!

I absolutely adore his sense of atmosphere and he admirably ignored musicoligists with his wonderful originality which fascinates me.
A huge thank you to Tchetuev for the slow tempo of the first movement !
Wonderful! This music has put me to sleep every time I listen to it - it has been a Godsend for someone like me.

"The door is closed on the agitation of the world?"
Could anything be more agitating than this "sonata"?
Philippe Cirse

Only during the final ten years or so of his life did Schittke's music become interesting to me. This is one of his better pieces from that period.

love it
Crazy great !
yeah ' that's good Schnittke !
Gorgeous.

I can hear great Scriabin influence
Да, с "Прометеем" -"Поэмой Огня"- мелькают ассоциации. Но Шнитке - полистилист, а Скрябин - скорее, - идеи пост импрессионизма.
I hear Bartok loads.

Звучит, как искажённо-переделанная 6 соната Прокофьева.
1:10 The piano tuner is getting frustrated with these pesky high notes 😁
Dissonant music. Fashionable and emotionally, but it is not beautiful.
Beauty is just a section of art. It isn't the be all and end all of good art. "The Scream" by Edvard Munch, for example, is far from pretty.
Fashionable? Seriously, this is one of the lamest comments I´ve ever read

+Eduardo C Of course, Schoenberg would say that. Given his ouevre, he would have to say that.
