In my opinion, his voice does not sound forced. It’s fluid and full bodied and every note says he is in love with the music as his public is with him. Bravo Senore
For what it's worth, I was a critic, for many years, for Opera News, long before Vittorio Grigorio came along. I am also the author of a fairly new book on Puccini. Until now, in spite of having heard word about him, I had not heard Grigorio. I have only one thing to say: He has it. Whatever *it* ultimately may be -- a certain purity of tone, affective intensity, or some transcendental communicative quality, or all of these - he has *it*, alright, in spades. It's overwhelming. Bravissimo!
I don't think anyone is comparing Pavarotti and Grigolo's voices as they are entirely different in timbre and colour. However, besides Alagna, who for all intents and purposes is French and not Italian, Grigolo is the first Italian tenor since Pavarotti that I have been able to truly appreciate and whose voice, technique and especially interpretation of the arias really excites me. Bravo Grigolo!
Very nice voice with a very sweet quality and yet a power that will continue to heighten as he develops his voice. I love Pavarotti and feel blessed to have been given the chance to listen to him for so long a time but I too agree that the constant comparisons should stop and let us enjoy each new tenor in their own right.
This is an excellent rendition of a difficult areia. Considering that he is young this tenor shows unusual intelligence and a rare ability to interpret! If I have a any reservation it is at best slight - he rushes the high C but hits it right on. No need to compare him to Pavarotti. In the hands of a good manager and teacher he could develop into an outstanding singer; the potential is definitely recognizable.Had we more singers like him the world of opera would be in in good shape.
I read a very bad comment for him, but must say he has a lovely ligth lyrical voice!!!, he is young musical, good looking...mmm, probably this is why some people tend to "overcritisim"for his performances. For me?, he is a great, great tenor, with lots of future . Bravo Grigolo!!!!
Amiga! me has copiado mi idea! jeje. BRAVO!
Thank God for youth! It's a lovely voice and a fellow with a good feeling of "theater" in him. But the very audible breaths indicate a resricted throat...and the carrying upward of the lower resonances will very soon take a toll on that pretty pretty voice. He is so much more at home in Popera and other non-operatic music...He reminds me of a very young Mario Lanza...ALMOST opera. Let us all wish him well.
Just read the article about him in this month's Opera News. I'd never heard of him before, but he's quite good. I enjoyed all of this until the high C, which sounds pushed (to my ears). In any case, he has a fine voice and I hope to hear more of him in the future.
@ivelosthewilltolive - I agree whole heartedly. The fact is, this voice is WAY prettier than Pav's. It's a mistake to try to hitch his wagon to a name that is NOT comparable either in the weight of reputation OR in the... erm... SPECIFIC color of sound that Pav had.
@Lovelytenor1 listening to this recording, I would agree with you. BUT he does not a small voice at all. This recording is deceptive. I saw him live at ROH last night in Manon - he was very good.
@Lovelytenor1 Watched a bit more of him too - clips with him singing Nessum Dorma and Una Furtiva Lagrima, and a concern is how much visible effort there seems to be. Noisy, high (chest rising) breathing (perhaps more stylistic and deliberate than anything else), red face and veins in the neck. Bit worrying. Whether you liked Pavarotti or not, in any clip up to the late 80's he always seemed to be singing well within himself. Sutherland too....
Jonas Kaufman is one of the few newer tenors that can do this song well, when comparing Vittorio with many of his peers, I just see him performing something else that is better suited to his voice, timbre, etc.
I think he's great but all of the press attention of the last few weeks (I live in New York where he's currently making his MET debut in La Boheme) is a bit overwhelming.
A very beautiful sound used with generally excellent musicianship but he he tends to rush his fences a bit to get to the c'' and he has somehow picked up a Pavarotti mannerism --notice that che-son becimes che-sona-ah here. The man has a major talent which one hopes will last longer than Rolando Villazon did.
@Lovelytenor1 But not all Puccini is big spinto - Boheme is seen as very definitely lyric, and should be quite young sounding. Difficult to tell on recording of course, but sounds appropriate to me. Hopefully he keeps away from the dramatic stuff for as long as possible to avoid the fete that Carreras had in his career (even bofore cancer), and what we are witnessing with Villazon right now.
I don't think it will last longer, if vittorio had a better technique probably he will be a great tenor, but he forces alot his voice, his voice is not going to last longer. WHat a waste for that beautiful voice
I don't think it's fair to a young tenor with a pleasant voice to compare him to Pavarotti, when he doesn't sound anything like him. And it's not good for opera in general to be constantly dwelling on the memory of a deceased superstar instead of realistically assessing the singers who are performing right now...
A lot of talking about technique(a lot of it really.... better not comment). I'll tell you what bothers me mostly- style. Those pseudo-endearing gulps. sudden closing of tone and making this effect of cuteness with a fluttering vibrato. God, please somebody get him rid of those mannerisms. And he will be fine indeed. But those mannerisms make for a problematic listening.
Grande Grande VITTORIO 'la voce'

Outstanding! Thank you for posting this!
what a gorgeous voice! so sweet, pure and virile at the same time. nice.
In my opinion, his voice does not sound forced. It’s fluid and full bodied and every note says he is in love with the music as his public is with him. Bravo Senore
I heard this on my car radio today - but had not heard of Vittorio. Thanks to RUclips, I found him easily. What a lovely voice he has.

None out there has a more beautiful Tenor voice than Vittorio

This is one of the most beautfiul renditions I've heard. I heard him sing this live a couple years ago at the met.
Beautiful! I believe Pava would be so proud to hear how this young man has developed---the next great Tenor----Bravo, Vittorio!
Hermosa voz.

Size isn't everything, and his technique is sound,he isn't forcing his voice at all,he sings well within his range!!
Stupendo
Amiga! me has copiado mi idea! jeje.

BRAVO!

Tom Salmon Oh no, not another mario lanza?! GOD help us all! We are all doomed!
Just read the article about him in this month's Opera News. I'd never heard of him before, but he's quite good. I enjoyed all of this until the high C, which sounds pushed (to my ears). In any case, he has a fine voice and I hope to hear more of him in the future.
Saw Grigolo live at The Met as Rodolfo. He has a large, emotionally moving voice.
Indeed it is Thanks!
esa voz acaricia.....
@dg6da If you're talking about the volume, I could hear him perfectly from back in the family circle at the Met. Incredible power.
I like it. It is live.
I like it
@Lovelytenor1 Nine months later I heard Grigplo in Covent Garden singing in Manon with Anna Netrebko SENSATIONAL!!!!!!!
Keep calm and Vittorio just sing
Really good
@ivelosthewilltolive - I agree whole heartedly. The fact is, this voice is WAY prettier than Pav's. It's a mistake to try to hitch his wagon to a name that is NOT comparable either in the weight of reputation OR in the... erm... SPECIFIC color of sound that Pav had.
Beautiful voice, like syrup, smooth and warm. I just wish that he wasn't in such a hurry to hit the high note.
@Lovelytenor1 listening to this recording, I would agree with you. BUT he does not a small voice at all. This recording is deceptive. I saw him live at ROH last night in Manon - he was very good.
@chislehurstbat I saw him in the same production of Manon at the ROH and have to agree with you.
@arcot9 he is one of the best tenor:D
@Andi6205 Problems with his S, sharp and loud? What are you talking about?
@colino72 I blame it on dramatics---ala his last teacher--Domingo.
@Andi6205 seriously !
@Lovelytenor1 Watched a bit more of him too - clips with him singing Nessum Dorma and Una Furtiva Lagrima, and a concern is how much visible effort there seems to be. I enjoyed this, but how can one compare him to Pavarotti now - time will tell.
He should Spend some time with Carlo Bergonzi
Jonas Kaufman is one of the few newer tenors that can do this song well, when comparing Vittorio with many of his peers, I just see him performing something else that is better suited to his voice, timbre, etc.
I think he's great but all of the press attention of the last few weeks (I live in New York where he's currently making his MET debut in La Boheme) is a bit overwhelming.
@banaliltes That's "Grigolo"...

NIce voice..but let's forget the somehow conection with Pavarotti. Just hear him for what he is.
Sobresaliente.
Mhm...I think that he has problems with his "s" - very sharp and loud.

I don't think it's fair to a young tenor with a pleasant voice to compare him to Pavarotti, when he doesn't sound anything like him.
And it's not good for opera in general to be constantly dwelling on the memory of a deceased superstar instead of realistically assessing the singers who are performing right now...
I feel a little to insensative to the action of the scene..

Lovely voice indeed, and he's a babe. Not very fond of his rhythms and phrasing though.
IMO, I think he has problems...Period.
