Tony: Thanks for the video. For the older EPROMs which need the higher voltages you need to use an external AC adapter with the programmer. I have used the GQ 4x4 successfully with such chips. MCU Mall appears to have decent customer support as well. I had a problem with an older model Geiger Counter and received a reply from support within a day with a solution.

Being too enthusiastic and programming the wrong firmware is exactly something I would do.

It's great to see another video from you Tony. Your lab appeared a lot fuller than on your last video so I guess you must be keeping your postman busy. Regarding the eprom programmer, well that took me back to my younger years when I used to download system upgrades over a 33kps land line modem and then write them to ultraviolet erasable eproms using DOS based macro's. It is certainly a very flexible system you got there which is great for backing up proms too. Have a good week. Ian

yes those UV eproms are from the ancient Romans times :) but this one can still program them.

Thank you Tony. You made my day. I have an older Tektronix 2465B 050000 and above with I think a dallas chip in it. Its so nice to know I can update the chip and when I restore the unit. And so easily. Leaned a lot today.

Just to say I was trying to write to M27C800 eproms ( GQ adapter ADP-054 needed) and they failed everytime at the first address and it did it to all my M27c800s so after much scratching of head and trying different settings apparently lots of these M27c800 now coming out of china a slower ones so I tried speed setting of 0 ( Default is 2)and bingo they all work, it is painful waiting for a eprom to program as it can be up to 30 minutes ! but it works :)

Thank you a lot. Now I have a solution to program my DS1486 out of my Tektronix TDS784D. The DS1245Y is the same NVRAM. And I don't need no more my old unfortunately defective Needham EMP-20!

So I just bought another programmer..... thanks Tony. I've been using a Batronix BX32 for EPROM's and DALLAS parts... you can never have enough programmers.

I prefer the Xeltek brand Currently Using the Superpro 6100N supports 409 manufactures and 103,421 Different chips and will add oddball chips on request.

GQ 4x4 is an awseome programmer I have two of them just in case one breaks. I backup all my slot machine eproms so I will always have them.

Hello Tony, and thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have a question for you. I looked in the manufacturer's website, and this programmer does support the Dallas DS1650Y, but it does not support the Dallas DS1486 (real time RAMified chip). I also own a Tek TDS784A, and I am having problems with the second chip. I tried to "Dremel" the chip, but, in spite there are no physical damage nor internal component damage, it seems to be erased. It has the new battery, but in spite of this the scope passes all tests, but it stops stuck in the small clock screen. I don't have copy of any chip (I did not have a GPIB to USB adapter, as I saw you in another video). Do you know what can I do?. The scope was working perfectly just before making the "experiment" of the battery change... I found another programmer (german) which does support all this chips (the 2 Dallas and also the EPROM). Fortunately, I do have a screen capture with the options and the FW revision, etc. Thanks a lot in advance, and regards from Madrid, Spain.

Hi, have a look at the tekwiki, the are copys of the firmware and settings available for download, but be carefull have both dallas download from the same firmware version as the old firmware stores data on the Aq board and de +4 firmware on the 2nd dallas or the other way around. there are some usefull comment on my TDS-744A dallas replacement video

@@TonyAlbus thanks a lot for your time!. I need the scope fixed. And I want to program the chip (watchdog timer) using a programmer (I have them mounted in sockets). In TekWiki I didn’t see the .bin file for this chip, so I don’t know where I can obtain one, to make tests until the scope works again. BTW, when it was working, it takes ages to startup, even without the self test disabled in the DIP switch (I think it’s number 3). Anyway, I will keep on searching. Let me know if I can be of any help to you, Tony. And if you have any link to download any resource. God bless you.
@@fichambawelby2632 Hi, the 744a is the same... w140.com/tekwiki/wiki/TDS744 scroll down past SOFTWARE and you will find FIRMWARE it are ZIP files, i thing it has both files in it. if not, let me know what firmware you have and i see if i have someware the send file.
@@TonyAlbus the zip file in TekWiki (4.2.1e) has 1 bin file inside (only one; maybe it is for the Dallas DS1650Y-100). The one I need is for the watchdog timer (Dallas DS1486-120). And to be programmed with a chip programmer, not via GPIB. The FW version of my TDS784A is 4.1e. The options are 13 1F 1M and 2F. Thanks again for your help, Tony. 🖐

@@TonyAlbus thanks for the reply. We purchased this GQ but it did not function properly. we needed it to read and copy an NEC D2764D rom chip. we determined that it was not reading the chip properly.

What is the external power port used for???

@@TonyAlbus The external power port on the side of the GQ 4x4 programmer. If it receives power from the USB port, why is there a separate power port on the side?
@@jeffnay6502 maybe for when the USB can not supply enough power.
@@TonyAlbus I believe that is exactly correct. As I have seen another video, where they were trying to program an old M2716 EPROM that requires 25VPP and it would only work when the additional 9V power supply was connected.
