Not only this but if I make a mistake with the wiring, can fix it super easy whereas the old one took another 10 minutes to fix. They cost a little more but totally worth it.

    I recently put in an industrial-grade Leviton 6-20R (W4561) where the back wiring holes guide the the wire between two plates, but instead of a spring loaded lever, they are clamped together by tightening the regular terminal screws. Have you seen this, and what are your thoughts on it? The gap between the plates was curved, which I think would increase the contact area when done correctly, but it all rattles around loose when open and seemed pretty easy to get it wrong by inserting the wire outside the plates (though you'd notice that when you tug to check).

    Im sorry if i missed it, but is it pomssible to back stabthese wires without lifting the lever? (Or do the instructions from the manufacturer say anything about that?) I was thinkimg it light be possible for install and you'd only need to use the lever for removal.

    • @evilhamsterman
      @evilhamsterman 11 дней назад

      You can, kind of like you can with Wagos. But it's difficult and it doesn't save much time over flipping the lever, insert the wire, then flip it back. The back stab saves time over making a hook, and screwing the wire on.
      I also think it's easier to tell when you have it fully inserted if you flip the lever because you can feel when it bottoms out.

    I had thought there was something in the NEC mandating that ground screws worked the way they always have done... In effect keeping them very basic and old-fashioned even as other terminals on the same device have gradually improved over time. These new devices obviously don't have ground screws anymore, is that because something in the code is changed allowing it?

    Interesting that even the "commercial grade" Lever Edge do not meet the Federal Spec WC596 specification, which deals with temperature stability, mechanical durability etc. The Hubbell Edge Connect are labeled as meeting Fed Spec.

    • @surferdude642
      @surferdude642 7 дней назад

      The commercial grade Leviton standard (non decora) receptacles don't meet Fed Spec WC596 either, even though they are stamped "spec grade". The spec sheet calls them "commercial spec grade", so it's a bit misleading. You'd need to go one level higher "heavy duty industrial grade" in the Leviton brand to meet Fed Spec WC596. I believe that the commercial grade Eaton and Legrand receptacles do meet Fed Spec WC596. Leviton brand is the most common in hardware and Home Depot stores in my area in California and I've never had issues with their commercial spec grade receptacles for residential use. Lowe's carries Eaton and Legrand can be ordered from Home Depot.

    I don't see this as being that great. Just like the back stab outlets, you can't see if the contacting surfaces are clean and not discolored. If the wire can be turned in the receptacle, then that is a fail. Some commenters call this the future. I suppose for the professional that charges labor by the outlet, then this might mean more money for less installation time. For my own house I will continue to use the wire wrapped around the screw type, as I don't mind spending a little time to make a quality connection.

  • @imlon2

    I'm shocked they haven't started in casing the ground wire, instead of it just being a bare wire. Specially now that the ARC fault breakers trip when a neutral touches ground where they used to be tied together in the box.
    The good thing about these type plugs there is no outside contact points and all bare wire is inside the plug. You can handled the plug without the chance of getting shock just making it much safer all away around.

      My house has sheathed ground wire. 12/2 600v PD-X, made in the 70s by Phelps Dodge. The company was a copper mining company and did wire for a bit I guess.

    • @surferdude642
      @surferdude642 7 дней назад

      It's unnecessary for the ground wire in Romex to be insulated and would require a larger sheathing, more expensive and harder to work with in typical residential plastic boxes. You have to be mindful of how you route the ground wire to keep it away from the neutral screws. If you use mc cable, allowed in metal boxes only, the ground wire is insulated with a green color. When were neutral and ground tied together in the box? Never heard of that, it's a dangerous thing.

    Unless they make this a code requirement, you're not going to see any major home builders requiring their subs to use these instead of the super cheap blue pieces of junk we see in all new home builds. It's the same reason we see Decora switches only to be matched by old-school rounded non-Decora outlets: cost savings to the extreme.
    What I'd like to see is updates to the NEC that require much larger boxes now that we are seeing new builds with minimum of 12ga wiring throughout -- that's what I have in my new home and I have to say, the installation of smart switches is not fun when the box is crammed full of inflexible 12/2 and 12/3 plus the requirement for neutrals everywhere.

    • @dansanger5340
      @dansanger5340 11 дней назад +7

      I think it's code. Removing a device can't interrupt the ground for the branch. They want you to pigtail grounds.

    • @evilhamsterman
      @evilhamsterman 11 дней назад +2

      The second connection is not primarily meant for daisy chaining. It can and frequently is used that way. But the main reason for it is so you can break off the tab between the receptacles so you can have the top and bottom on different circuits, like if you want to have one controlled by a switch.
      Either way it's generally considered best practice to pigtail all your outlets, that way if one has a problem it doesn't affect all the ones further down.

When I begin a wiring project and need to use 12/2 with ground wire, I cringe when I see that wire. If a more flexible stranded wire had the proper length of insulation removed, the wire twisted, placed inside the outlet, and the lever closed, wiring an outlet would be easier. The big advantage is when you do have to replace them you won't have to possibly cut your wire back if they're damaged from the hook around the screw.

      How would you like someone to show products if you think things are paid advertisements and reputable youtubers are just hiding them from us? As he said, not a fan of the regular edge. You think Leviton want's him telling people to not buy some of their products.....
