This PC Engine CD exclusive remake of Golden Axe had an amazing soundtrack and nearly 30 minutes of new animated cutscenes. Great stuff! The game... not so much. Hope you enjoy the translation!
Imagine if someone revamped at least the game code to prevent lagging. Or, conversely, adapt the cinema and cutscenes to another standard such as the Sega CD, which did a fair port, and then financed an English dub or sub (or both), not through one of those shady localizers but through some dedicated fans. Then, the AVGN could hate on it anyway, because I'm sure there's an objectively excellent game that he despises on principle, and I bet it would be Golden Axe.
Altered Beast starts with a hero (or in the JP plot a former rival) rising from his grave, Golden Axe apparently started with a villain rising from his grave. Now that's poetry.
It's always cool go see the cutscene-laden editions of my favorite childhood games on the PC-Engine, but it's sad to see how sometimes the gameplay of these productions would suffer. I'm glad I grew up with the Genesis as a kid. Too bad we never got an ultimate version of this with gorgeous Redbook audio and cutscenes, and the graphics and gameplay of the arcade and Genesis versions. (And it's also a shame we STILL don't have a home console or PC release of "Revenge of Death Adder"!)
"Take Tyris, for instance. What did they do to her face?! She could pass for a truck driver with that five o'clock shadow, and she looks a fat middle-aged man with Fabio hair whenever she dashes while riding a dragon." That is rather hilarious, Alex. I'll remember that. 😂
I love original trilogy on Sega Mega Drive. But saw PC-engine version too. Weaker technically but with cutscenes, like Castlevania Rondo of Blood. Thank you for upload, time to watch. But I'm sure it will be entertaining, as all what you do.
Thanks for the translation, fella. This conversion could've been great in different hands than Telenet Japan. As it is, it's just a subpar effort. The graphics are a farcry even from the Megadrive port and the sound fx would fit well on an Atari 2600 game except i played A2600 games with better sound fx than this. Too bad...
"Wuooooooh! Dess Adah sama!" It's weird how Battler goes from effeminate wussy in the cut scenes to a middle aged bodybuilder with a stage 4 or 5 on the Norwood scale baldness in the game. Was it so hard to be consistent with your art style? Just because you are Japanese doesn't you are obligated to draw exclusively in... "anime", or whatever it called.
Totally digging the cutscenes and then we got to the actual game. I'll stick to the arcade and Mega Drive/Genesis versions, but I'd love to be able to watch more of the cutscenes if a tv show was ever released! 😂 🍿
The poor quality of this port was a surprise given that Telenet was reputable for producing mostly solid output on the PC Engine CD, though this is an early game and does not benefit from the Super Card add-on. Doesn't excuse it for having 8-bit visuals though.
A solid effort on the translation! But the gameplay looks pretty darn watered down! And lacking the challenge... I wonder which could be worse of a version of Golden Axe? This or the Sega AGES remake?
Love the soundtrack, but don't like a remix track ends in silence rather have it loop. As for the graphics, this looks more met for the turbo cart, but a cd version add cutscenes. If this is it then I have no problem with this version.
The cutscenes and the remixed music are great, but what happened to the sound effects? All those digitized screams when civilians run away and enemies are defeated are gone, replaced by what sound like Atari noises! Even the Genesis kept the screams.
I'd love to post an English playthrough of that one, but there's no way I could dedicate the time it would take to time and format subtitles for a six hour video of such a text-heavy game.
Oh, the Engrish! It's downright funny! Great cutscenes, through, but if all a game can offer is this, I'd rather watch a freaking movie! Edit: I must add, soundtrack scared my cats!
Столько раз играл в неё, но никогда не знал что в игре целый фильм есть. Может я играл в обрезанную версию. Персонаж gigachad! Аааа... Это первая часть... Я в позднюю играл.
Good that this ends with the Death Adder fight outside of the castle. In recent years, I've come to prefer the original Arcade game over the Genesis port. I thought the final fight in said Genesis port was way too cheap.
Wow, you weren't kidding about the gameplay not getting any updates. I'm not familiar with the capabilities of the PC Engine but this game looks like a direct downgrade of the Mega Drive/Genesis version.
My opinion, but it seems pretty shoddy to make a CD version, under the auspices that it will be remarkably better than cartridge-based versions of the same game, only to have this amalgamation of clear voice acting, good music, and cutscene animations, but only bargain basement sound effects and visuals. I've seen this with a number of CD titles I never got to play or see in-person at the time, but can look up now to watch. In the 90s the consumer expectation was that the CD version of a game would be better in every way other than maybe the gameplay scheme.
Surprised how bad this version is . The genesis version was perfect . I owned the actual arcade game . Beat it on the hardest difficultly and got A+++ rating . Was doing 2 players , I don’t believe I got hit once from what I remember.
The Genesis version gameplay, title music, sound effects are better than this. The only thing the pc engine had going for it was the Anime Cinematics, and maybe the music, otherwise it played and sounded like an 8 bit title
What the hell happened with the Sega CD port? This is the Sega CD, and they couldn't even manage to have the good sound effects from the arcade version??? I had a Sega cd back in the day but never played This game. I'm guessing that even back then, this port was pretty disappointing.

What a blunder! Earthworm Jim 2 on the Saturn, when?
Turbographix CD here in the USA
The Genesis Title Screen Music is better
I love the Genesis version, but I had no idea that a PC Engine CD version even exists.
Takeshi Aono as Gilius Thunderhead, Ryo Horikawa as The King, Mayumi Sho as The Queen, and Kozo Shioya as Heineken.

*I've never heard of this version of Golden Axe before.*
When 90% of your budget goes to voice actors.
It wasn't that big of a budget then.
thanks for the subtitles!
Yvw! :)
Amazing 😁👍
Excellent gameplay bro 😏👉👉
Golden Axe Forever!
Man the cinematics are gold!
"Take Tyris, for instance. What did they do to her face?! She could pass for a truck driver with that five o'clock shadow, and she looks a fat middle-aged man with Fabio hair whenever she dashes while riding a dragon."

Ax Battler lol. the anime scenes are good.

21:50 god damn...
Right? The dude's got watermelon cheeks.
love the music

Amazing epic bgm I did not notice it
we wasted our budget on the cut scenes lol
This was the problem with a lot of first wave CD-based systems: A lot of the time, gameplay took a backseat to the window dressing.
I am livid that we never got this in the west. The presentation values are astronomical.
I would've liked to see these cutscenes put into the Sega CD version. This one doesn't play very well.
@@NintendoComplete Oh wow that would have been amazing right? a definitive version of G.A. with all the bells and whistles for the sega CD.
"Idiots! That's not Tyris! You're fighting her STUNT DOUBLE!!"

Gilius was the best cutscenes. I played the orignal as a kid arcade version & later genensis version. But this was the Best version of the game!
A solid effort on the translation!
But the gameplay looks pretty darn watered down! And lacking the challenge...
I wonder which could be worse of a version of Golden Axe? This or the Sega AGES remake?
This, by a landslide.
Gotta say you're asking for trouble naming your city Firewood.
Cutscenes Ax Battler and in game Ax Battler and two very different characters!
why does axe battler look like an anime pretty boy in cutscenes, but in gameplay looks like a 5'4 middle aged italian uncle with receding hairline?
Love the soundtrack, but don't like a remix track ends in silence rather have it loop. As for the graphics, this looks more met for the turbo cart, but a cd version add cutscenes. If this is it then I have no problem with this version.
Never knew golden axe had all that story. Funny how the game characters look nothing like the cutscenes lol
Cool video.
The cutscenes and the remixed music are great, but what happened to the sound effects? All those digitized screams when civilians run away and enemies are defeated are gone, replaced by what sound like Atari noises! Even the Genesis kept the screams.
Love the anime introduction!
When will you translate the PCECD version of Snatcher
I'd love to post an English playthrough of that one, but there's no way I could dedicate the time it would take to time and format subtitles for a six hour video of such a text-heavy game.
@@NintendoComplete fair enough
Cool!
43:44 The way Death Adder swings his ax 😂
21:48 Golden Cake
When the gameplay starts...that's gotta be the biggest let down in gaming history, right?
Oh, the Engrish! It's downright funny! Great cutscenes, through, but if all a game can offer is this, I'd rather watch a freaking movie!
Edit: I must add, soundtrack scared my cats!
Never really understood what weapon the evil girls use...some kind of scourge?
That intro! 😎🔥🔥
49:30 To the right there’s a woman just standing there while a full on battle is going on 😅

At last good story i played in amiga game before but no storyline at all

Looking good at the start with the intro and the anime cut scene.
The game starts....
Disappointed!!!.
So Death Adder _IS_ really a brood of vipers.
Death Adder is dubbed by Buffaloman!
I just wasted a CD burning this for my PCE... F
Surprised how bad this version is . The genesis version was perfect . I owned the actual arcade game . Beat it on the hardest difficultly and got A+++ rating . Was doing 2 players , I don’t believe I got hit once from what I remember.
Из роликов и игры непонятно, при чем тут Золотой топор? Раскрыли историю персонажей, а пояснить название игры забыли))
The golden axe is Death Adder's weapon
only now know there is such remake with new animated scenes............so why they don't clear bugs in fighting the boss so easily? @@
The Genesis version gameplay, title music, sound effects are better than this. The only thing the pc engine had going for it was the Anime Cinematics, and maybe the music, otherwise it played and sounded like an 8 bit title
What in the hell happened to the graphics? Was it a condition of the Sega license they had to make it look terrible?
Se não fosse os diálogos em cenas animadas, e as músicas, acharia este "port" péssimo.
Because of story mode never published in sega version
It looks like this version of the game cut you some slack with a few glaring exploits.
Nice cinematics and musics, but the game itself is very crap and the soundFX even worse
I was expecting something amazing from the cutscenes and voice acting, but then I saw the graphics and heard the sound effects 🤦♂️!
They might as well have skipped the cutscenes and released this on the HuCard, what a waste of a 700mb disc.
What the hell happened with the Sega CD port? This is the Sega CD, and they couldn't even manage to have the good sound effects from the arcade version???
I had a Sega cd back in the day but never played This game. I'm guessing that even back then, this port was pretty disappointing.
This isn't Sega CD. This is the Japanese Turbo Grafx-16 CD port.
Better on ZX Spectrum.
Compile
*Ax battler*
- *also **_doesnt_** fight with an axe*
I think he's named that because he's battling the guy with the Golden Axe.
Goddamn this version is a piece of shit! lmao great soundtrack though.
Even the c64 port is better than this pap
