  • A quick how-to video demostrating belt replacement in a Sony Walkman. In this example, we're using a WM-EX102, but it will be similar for any of the later cassette Walkman models with snap together cases. Belts turn to goo over time, so if your Walkman has quit playing tapes, chances are the belt has perished. Let's get you fixed up!

    This was my first "good" Walkman back in january, 1994. Simple and to the point: just cassete player with an immense sound stage!

      Nothing like that feeling of getting a good one and realizing what you'd been missing up to that point.

    Hello ~ I have this exact Walkman. It is in excellent shape. I'm guessing the belt is trashed but I don't want to tackle this myself. Would this be something you could repair for me? It's a great size and I'd like to be able to hear my grandparents and friends on some tapes I have. Thank you for any response.

      Sorry for the slow response. Your comment somehow got buried behind some others. Have you been able to repair your Walkman yet? If not, I do offer repair services. You can find info and contact me through my website: www.vintageelectronics.tv

    longshot here, but I'm replacing the belt in the exact same model and when I opened the case, a metal piece fell out.. looks like the positive end of the battery holder but eith four arms to it. Any ideas where that might go? Poked around the circuit board and I can't make out where it would fit.

    • @alysania2

      haha got it. goes on the inside of the case, looks like it grounds the DC adapter.

    I got one of these plasticy type Walkmans (a WM-BF22 from 1988) off ebay about a year ago. The guy said he had replaced the belt. But now after many months of listening to it working perfectly, the wow and flutter is just awful. can't listen to audio books or anything. I think maybe the belt is defective. But how do you know what size of belt will fit or where to buy reliable quality rubber bands?

    • @VintageElectronicsChannel
      @VintageElectronicsChannel  Год назад

      Belt assortments are available on eBay and Amazon for a few dollars that would allow you to match up the correct size. Alternatively, you can take the belt out and measure it to order a correctly sized single. I'd check the moving parts for dried lubrication first.

    how would you know when it's needed to change the belt?

    • @nikopokrishchenko5376
      @nikopokrishchenko5376 Год назад

      usually you can hear the motor whirring inside the walkman, but nothing will move (it won't play cassettes). this probably means that your belt either broke, turned into goo, or it came off the moving parts. either way, if you haven't replaced the original belt on your walkman it's best to do so.

    my wm-af22 has no clips and no screws so i'm still puzzled on how to open it

    • @VintageElectronicsChannel
      @VintageElectronicsChannel  Год назад

      There are some models that are all clips. They typically break when trying to take them apart.

    • @VintageElectronicsChannel
      @VintageElectronicsChannel  Год назад

      I just did some quick research on that model, and it is a clipped together design. You'd have to use a very thin pry device to slip between the halves to get it apart... carefully.

    • @randyharrigan4790
      @randyharrigan4790 Год назад

      @@VintageElectronicsChannel i got it open with a spoger and few minor blemishes ... it wasn't easy... one of the clips broke but luckily it still holds together well. I Re-belted it and adjusted the speed and it's working good now.

    its a pity towards the end of the walkman's life that it is cheaply manufactured in china. not even a screw to hold it together!

    All wrong belt. Wow and flutter is shit high now. 0,7mm belt is much better. I did that,and now gotta find original sizes. That belt size goes In boomboxes, tapedeck's. Not In walkmans.
