Tatsuya Endo, author of Spy x Family - one of the most popular animes to come out in the Spring and Fall seasons of 2022 anime - said in an interview that he didn't have any feelings of affection towards the characters he drew and the internet went beserk. Later it was found out that it was a clickbait article that took the quote out of context - but the damage was already done.
The series, featuring Loid Forger, Yor Forger, and Anya Forger (code named Twilight and the Thorn Queen) was a smash hit in the spring and fall 2022 anime roster, with Anya particularly becoming anime's next viral pink haired anime girl in a series of missions to preserve peace and order in a world inspired by the cold war. Loid, tasked with raising a family to achieve his goals, adopts Anya as his child and marries Yor to cement his identity, but it turns out having a fake family is more work that it turns out to be. The ensuing antics, cuteness, and hilarity topped Spy x Family as one of the biggest animes to come out in 2022

No one gives a shit about his previous works, he could draw whatever he wanted, no one needed it. When they "force" him to draw something new, it blew up and gave him money and audience. At the end of the day system gave us an excellent show and resources to the artist. I'd say the system works just fine.

      @camimi7782 Год назад +59

@@Ambussing You have a point, and fortunately HitReg tells us that it made him happy because Spy x Family is popular or at least that's what we are to believe, but it remains that if the artist's work isn't recognized unless they do something that everyone will like for sure it doesn't feel like their work is truly seen for what it is.
It's a grey area where yes the artist gets their work seen and everyone can enjoy it but is it really what they want to do and what they want everyone to see about them?
There's no simple answer to that question because everything is ambiguous and the truth of the matter is, no matter what happens in the future, if the artist feels at least a minimum fulfilled with their work then we can say they've done more than most artists in this world.

This idea of people thinking that Endo should just turn SxF into dark and gritty story is revolting to me.
He literally wrote those kind stories and it didn't work.
His previous works are just another stories on the dark and gritty manga genre.
SxF is something else. You can feel the fragility of forger family, the pain of the characters, the dreadful future.

I used to buy the mangas at m bookstore to support the author, but I no longer do that anymore. The backstory of the war is super interesting and so is Yor's. Anya's cute. She's great comedic relief. But after like 5 books of the manga and seeing we're not getting any closer to Loid's goal, instead, the stories sprinkled in the books is more slice of life with the Forger family than anything, I lost my interest. There's a TON of slice of life anime nowadays - especially romance. I wanted to read and see something a little different for once and don't mind the comedic relief, but it's just too much

    • @neckbeardcat6777
      @neckbeardcat6777 8 месяцев назад +3

@setiem13 not necessarily. It's moreso when the artist knows what works and what doesn't AND is able to balance their desires and reality. While this is able to be helped by editor and publisher feedback, it ultimately relies on the artist having the humility and skill to strike a practical balance between their vision and in the case of widely published manga, a product that has to generate revenue for themselves and the company employing their services.
Companies can just as well put too much of a leash on an artist and take actions that end in the death of an IP as the voice behind it is silenced in favor or what the company (who's largely run or financed by people who simply don't write or draw these stories or really even consume them) thinks will generate the most profit.
To a large extent the anime and manga industry runs in a manner similar to a stock market which has created massive issues in the production of these storytelling mediums and is one of many driving factors for the oncoming decline of many major anime and manga studios.
It's better the say that an artist wanting to make a living in this kind of industry works best when they and the company they work with are able to strike a balance between their respective desires in order the make the best product they can, expressing an artists desired vision while keeping a property financially viable for both the author and publisher. Leashing is not practical when compared to good communication and planning.

The manga artist, Tatsuya Endo, did not necessarily hate his masterpiece. Instead, he felt that he had lost passion for the story and was struggling with depression. This led to him feeling disconnected from the work he had created, which he had previously poured his heart and soul into.
Endo's struggle with depression and lack of passion for his work was not related to the quality or success of the story. In fact, the story, Spy x Family, became a massive hit and was well-received by both readers and critics. However, Endo's feelings of disconnection and depression made it difficult for him to enjoy the success and appreciate the work he had created.
With the help of his friend, Rin, Endo was able to recognize that he could overcome his depression and create something new. He returned to the industry with a new story, Spy x Family, which became a massive hit and helped him regain his passion for creating manga.

Depression is hard to get over. Especially in countries like Japan where there's no psych help, and it's frowned upon to receive. It has a way of training your brain to always be sad, because the circuitry gets stronger the longer it goes on, and to try and get out of it also causes pain.
It also has a disassociation effect, so I'm not surprised Endo is having trouble with Spy x Family.

There's already plenty of darkness in the backgrounds of the world and characters. The story has dark and violent moments. But the found family aspect of three desperate and lonely people is what sets the story to another level. Yes, it's primarily a comedy, but it's on the edge of being a dark comedy. Even the family dog has a horrible and tragic backstory. This is a family that has already suffered through a lot of trauma. And are trying to make a happier world and life.

From what I've seen. People who make dark stuff and then put effort towards making something lighter, tend to actually make better "lighthearted" content than those who just make lighthearted content. I personally think it's because there's oftentimes dark themes worked into the stories, which work to bolster the lighthearted moments all the more. Light often looks brighter when it's piercing darkness. There are exceptions, but that's what I've observed

Edit: The original title was "The anime Twitter said should exist."
That is such a terrible title. This is so much more interesting than just Twitter being Twitter. This a story of a man who has issues balancing what sells and what he wants to make, and finding something that isn't quite what he wanted to make yet finding the joy in how passionate people can be - proving that "what sells" and going against what you usually make doesn't necessarily have to be work that is passionless but instead something that resonates with others and, eventually, you.
There's something beautifully poetic in the way it comes full circle with the author, and anyone who focuses on the Twitter aspect has clearly not watched the entire video and just focused on the title.
I'd imagine you've had to go through a lot of interviews and materials to get to make this story. Especially amazing how natural you make the dialogues are - I highly doubt there's any actual records of them or that's the way they talked about it, so you must've gone through the interviews and pieced together an interesting and natural way to get those information across as a story for the audience.
So for the love of god, get a better title, because this actual video is so much more interesting than the title make it to be and people should focus on the actual story in the video than the current title.

So, Endo hated his Spy X Family story for not being allowed to be "too dark". I understand the frustration he was experiencing writing this series as dark fiction is obviously his favorite genre, but I do not think he should be forced to write other genres that he is not a fan of. Shonen Jump may not be the best place for him to work at nor should he keep writing for the Shonen demographic. I say he should go to Seinen magazines and write darker stories for an older demographic. That maybe the best solution for him.

When I created my protagonist, I said multiple times to myself that I didn't like her that much, because I felt like she was just thrown there to fullfill the role of a protagonist so I could show the story. But I had something inside of be that really wanted her to be more. After lots of thinking and writing, I can say today that she's one of my favorite characters in the story. Her simplicity is what makes her so appealing most of the times when she interacts with other characters and this makes a better experience for me as a (beginner) writer.

Much of the comedy is from the extreme effort made to create a fake facade by the three main characters to fool everyone and each other with Anya the telepath being the main narrator of this story.... it is very over the top funny stuff... Endo's experience with the dark side appears to give the story's darker parts more realism and which makes the main characters OP maneuvers to escape the darker challenges all that more funny.

If you really want to see someone hate their work, look no further than Kazuhiko Katō; the creator of _Lupin III._ Though in his case, it's less to do with a hate for Lupin and more to the fact that the Series is tied into "Monkey Punch", the studio that licensed it. He hated the companies' name and that his work is tied in to it being the ONLY thing actually keeping the company afloat and relevant all these decades later. It's much like the "Trash Boat" situation from _Regular Show_ if you stop and think about it...

As someone who’s hyperfixation is spy x family, knowing Endo’s history only makes it more interesting. Spy x family is so overwhelmingly human, and it only could’ve been made by someone like Endo. Idk how to explain it but this story is born out of living. Endo is such a good author, and Spy x family is definitely his best work.
Your videos are incredible, keep it up!

*BOYCOTT* this trash my dudes. Support the creator! Let them know artist wont be manipulated into doing what they're not passionate about!

He’s not being forced to do it lol. The reason he keeps producing the series is because no one cares about any of his other work. And if you’ve read you’d know why: they’re not very good.

It's nothing new actually. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of Sherlock Holmes , had originally planned on ending the series(can I call it a series??) relatively early on by having Sherlock Holmes killed but then the brits ppl were like protesting, not goin to work and wearing black arm-bands and sh1t. So he had to continue(continue making masterpieces that is). Sad thing is when he died , there wasn't much of a fuss like when Sherlock Holmes did. Man I'm bad at explaining sh1t, watch a video essay on the biography of the authour for justice. 🙇

A bit later than most responses, but my thoughts on first hearing this is that Endo should get over himself. That is a problem a lot of talented artists and creators have. People in general in fact, what someone is good at, is oftentimes not what they are passionate about. When it comes to professional work, it's always been more about what people will pay you for, not what you want to do. As Millennials and Zoomers have yet to figure this out, I think it's been having a profound impact on society. To put things into perspective due to early life experience I wanted to dedicate myself to catch very bad people, I educated and trained extensively to do so, and then wound up actually being employed by exactly the kind of people I would have considered the bad guys.... the Casino Industry. I was a sex abuse victim and for like 10 years of my life almost anyone who I was close to was either family, a very close sub-set of co-workers I couldn't publically acknowledge for all intents and purposes, or involved in sex work, or running some kind of grift in one way or another. While I miss the money, it messed me up a lot, but if it wasn't for that, I wouldn't even have the little bit I do now I don't think.
At any rate I think Endo's real problem was that he was trying to do dark and edgy stuff at a time when there were a lot of super-talented people doing the same kinds of stuff all over the world. Even being good at it, doesn't matter if there are a lot of people in recent memory, perhaps even the ones who inspired you, who were so much better than you are at that kind of thing.
Even since the 1990s era high-edgelordism has been cool, everyone who wants to be profound is always about darkness, despair, and nastiness. There are only so many ways you can say "life seems futile and unfulfilling, it has no meaning, and human existence is suffering" directly, metaphorically, a combination of the two, eventually it all drowns itself out and you have to be something really special to even register. To be fair in that environment knowing how to be optimistic and have some kind of positive vibe is what makes you stand out, as nobody wants that sort of thing non-stop. Ever since the 1990s people have been remarking that it seems every creative has some idea of what hell and endless suffering might be like, each more terrifying and convincing than the last, but yet you will search far and wide without seeing anything similar done with heaven or happiness. That in of itself is a problem, you cannot really do the Yin without the Yang, and it was long ago noticed pop culture was being destroyed because of it. I think Spy X Family succeeded because it's relatively upbeat, and yes it had dark bits, but those dark bits just reinforce it's upbeat nature as you cannot have good without bad, or at least not convincingly.
See if he had gone full dark with this, given what he thinks of Assassins, he probably would have done something like "Noir". The problem is, we already had "Noir". Let's also not forget Kentaro Miura pretty much defined our current era of dark fantasy with "Berserk", even if he never finished it. This is still hugely influential, and really, your just not going to out edgelord that guy while still telling a good strory.... if you want to do this stuff you need to wait for memories of guys like that to fade.
