I just subbed the channel because of Elvis , and the young lady who said that this song should be shown around the World on radio channels and TV commercials, everyday, it's really more important now than ever before , Elvis home Graceland is in Memphis TN and of course you know that is where MLK was assasanitsted, this was written especially for Elvis to make his message to the world. , he grew up in the ghetto and he never forgot where he came from and so when you say I can feel the emotion in his body and soul , well the answer is Obviously A fact , he always dreamed of getting out of the ghetto and never stopped searching until he made that Dream come true , but he never forgot where he came from, a shotgun house with no electricity or running water and he told his mama, One day I'm going to buy you a big house and a pink Cadillac , we'll that is exactly 💯 right what he did . Elvis is the best, he was an activist when it wasn't cool. He was a fan of MLKjr. This was the turbulent 60's, MLK had been shot only 8 miles from his home in Memphis, Robert Kennedy had been killed , his manager didn't want him to do this song, he thought it would hurt his career. Elvis grew up in a black neighborhood he was very poor. Thank you for this awesome reaction, be blessed.
That part about the career thing with his Manager is not true ..... Colonel Parker did not say that ...... That is a rumor ..... But what he did say was he wanted Elvis to sing ...... White Christmas .... sung in the comeback show ...... Elvis did not ...... And asked the colonel if Blue Christmas would be OK and the colonel said yes .... And he grow up in a very poor neighborhood of all peoples ..... Not just black ...... As anyone that has nothing is poor ...... And in a ghetto
@@bign8580Not quite. Elvis hated the song Blue Christmas and never wanted to record it. Parker didn't want Elvis to perform any real and powerful music. He wanted him pigeonholed as a fluff performer so he could keep control of his cash cow. Elvis was offered the leading role on A Star is Born but Parker put a stop to it. He knew if he was accepted as a serious actor he'd be pushed aside... and rightfully so.

Everything in this performance has a purpose. The song itself was written by Earl Brown, inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech I Have a Dream. The song was written with Elvis in mind & it’s a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Mr. Brown was aware of Elvis love for Dr. King. He also knew that Elvis was devastated by the news of Dr. King’s assassination (less than 9 miles from Graceland, Elvis‘s home). The white suit was also worn to accompany the song’s dream for better days. At the time, the conflict in Vietnam was heart wrenching. In remembrance, of the lives lost during the Vietnam war. The burgundy colored scarf Elvis wore around his neck was for them.

I saw a documentary about Elvis. After he sang this song, he went backstage, collapsed to the floor, and sobbed. His backup singers said they had never seen Elvis sing with that much passion. They were crying, too. The crimson red neckerchief Elvis wore represented the blood of every soldier who was killed in Vietnam at the time. And, to think his manager didn't want Elvis to sing this song. He wanted Elvis to end this tour with a Christmas song. Lucky for us, Elvis got his way. 🎶
1968 is the year MLK Jr was assasinated which affected Elvis deeply. He respected and admired MLK greatly.
It was also the year Robert Kennedy was assassinated 2 mos. after.
You have just witnessed a devastated Elvis singing out his soul to honor his assassinated friends, Dr. Martin Luther King, and Senator Bobby Kennedy who was also a fierce fighter for human rights and equality. Watch the video "Elvis Presley and the Black Community" and that will give you an good idea of how Elvis fought his heart out for the innocent downtrodden.. He grew up dirt poor and hung out with African Americans who loved him as much as he loved them. He was a force for good, and it hurts to see him called a racist. He was a courageous fighter all of this life. I love that man.
The Colonel didn't want Elvis to sing this song. But Elvis had this song written and he layed down on the floor and curled up in a fetal positiin and sang this song. But Steve Binder the director told Elvis he didn't care how food the recorded song was he had to song it live, no mouthing. Elvis sang the song with all his soul and after he was done he almost passed out. That is how it affected him. When Elvis sings a song tears flow. Never be another man with so much compassion. Elvis didn‘t write this song, but this song was written especially for him for this 1968 Comeback Special from Walter Earl Brown. Elvis made this song to his own and was meaning and feeling every word he sang.
A lot has been said about Elvis's influence on the song being written but it's a bit of revisionism, at least according to the writer, Walter Earl Brown. He said he was asked to write a closing number, given no particular theme, and had no idea what he was gonna write. This song came to him, he wrote it and second guessed himself. He assumed Elvis wouldn't even like it for the show and thought maybe he could sell it to Aretha Franklin or someone. He was surprised that Elvis liked the song and was happy he sang it.

Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968. This was Elvis’s 68 Comeback Special Which aired on December 3, 1968, eight months after Dr. King’s assassination.

Bombs bursting in air refers to the war of 1812 when we were attacked at Fort Henry by the British. As they bombed us our flag still stood never touching the ground. If we hadn't defended ourselves we would be a colony in slavery to Britain.

SOME BACKGROUND INFO: As per the producer-director of the '68 special -- Steve Binder -- Elvis, Binder & others were together in the studio when they heard noise coming from the TV in the next room; it was the TV news broadcast that Robert Kennedy had just been assassinated. Binder, Elvis, et al sat up until about 4 a.m. talking about the turmoil in the world at that time w-Elvis expressing his thoughts & feelings. Binder asked songwriter Walter Earl Brown to compose a song based on those discussions. The song is notable for its similarities to Martin Luther King’s wish for a world of peace and harmony. The red tie was for the blood shed in Vietnam. See the video "Gates of Graceland: Secrets of the '68 Special" for the entire story of the '68 special, + all the other Steve Binder video interviews regarding the culmination of the song & the entire making of the special. Binder, now 92, was the most upstanding, ethical person in the business, along w-Marty Pasetta, producer of the Hawaii concert & ingenious creator of that ramp from the stage so that Elvis could get to the audience.
I suggest that you do not continue to break into the song & talk for such long periods of time. And THIS song in particular is one that needs to run through uninterrupted. You're killing & destroying the performance. There's a time & place for everything & talking here is not it.
