To speak to Wilt and Russell, the league wasn't actually a whole lot easier. The Hawks were small, every other team's starting center was at least 6"10 and having only 8 teams meant each of those 8 was a lot more talented. I imagine teams today would have a much harder time if you took away all the easy Ws against thd Hornets, Wizards, Spurs etc that just don't have a lot of talent on their rosters. The playoffs were a little easier since kinda likevthr NFL now top seated teams didn't play the first round. But note I say a little, the biggest difference is 1 fewer round means less injury risk. How often are those 1-8 and 2-7 series actually competitive? In recent years we've seen a few instances where that's happen but an 8 beating a 1 has only happened 6 times.

I hope others have already explained this, but the reason they lift, is similar to: Next time your in a car someone else is driving, roll down the window and place your hand in a small cup making it look like a car with the back of your hand upward and your fingers pointed forward. If the car is going fast enough you should feel the wind pushing the back of your hand downward, if you lift your fingers slowly the wind will catch the bottom(palm) of your hand and jerk it backwards. same thing to these cars. they are designed to be going forward, with the wind of 180-200 mph pushing the front/top of the car down into the track. Once they get sideways, or backwards, the wind pressure is no longer pushing the card down, but rather pushing the car up, much like the wing of a plane. It rare now a days to see a flip that doesn't involve rolling on top of someone else, because they've added flaps that stop the cars from flipping. But in the older videos, this knowledge wasn't known, so them cars didn't have the safety these new cars do. So there were a lot more flips back then, compared to now. Also I'm 99% all of these accidents no one was killed. Might have injuries like broken bone, scraps bruises and concussions, but all were able to continue racing.
