I suffered trauma as a child, which I never had any outlet for expressing. I married out of fear of being alone, created the family I never had, but desperately wanted. Suppressed all of my pain until now, when my children are grown, marriage dissolved. I'm alone, feeling pain and fear that I've hidden from for so long. COVID hysteria, job loss, the uncertainty of this "new normal" society has triggered severe anxiety and depression about my future. I'm struggling to move forward.

I’m in the same boat, and I’m 67, but some of these things pop up because my sisters whom I was close to, have decided I’m not worth having as part of the family, probably because I had breast implant illness and mold toxicity for 13 years not knowing what was deteriorating my body and brain. I had to retire from my teaching career, get the implants out, move by myself, and I’m very tiny, and everyone has deserted me. My daughter has joined the narcissistic cult that had developed because my one sister, who is a shopaholic and a liar, married well and has millions and millions of dollars. I’m struggling, and no one comes here except my granddaughter when I’m asked to babysit.
I’m very sad, but am trying not to let this bother me. I’m praying like a mad woman! Plus, I’m talking care if my mentally ill son, who has mold toxicity and a tick borne illness, yet, he doesn’t listen to me about getting rid of this because i know what to do, since I had the same thing before. My ex is here every day to visit it my son, but has been 15 months. My son has a new puppy who he doesn’t take care of. It’s huge and my own dog is scared of him! I’m ready to have a meltdown because I’m taking care of him and trying to live my own life. My daughter picks on me constantly, and I was the best mother to her and put her through school!
I do have autoimmune issues and have all the things you mentioned, ruined around the middle of this broadcast. I don’t do anything I used to anymore, and am being tested for sleep disorders. I’m ready to cash it in.
I have had absolutely NO SUPPORT from one person my entire life. I tried, but it backfired and they thought I was a hypochondriac and on drugs! I can’t win!

It isn't easy yet it is possible to heal. I have been guided by my higher power to things that work like acupuncture, TCM, psylicibin, hypnotherapy and it's less than it was before. Thanks for this. I was brutalized and terrorized as a child. I had a gun held to my head many times and one time it discharged. It gave me shell shock, destroying my nervous system causing brain damage. Understanding this takes the blame off myself because I usually can't keep up with most people in daily life. And it makes me feel inept. I don't have the money for PTSD counseling. Just learning about this helps me. 🙏

I wonder if you may be onto something. I’ve never heard of people asking their mothers how their pregnancies went while they were being grown. That’s a wonderful question. Yet you’re also a girl - you needed your daddy. Even if only for 3 or 6 years. My dad was once a lineman as well. ❤️ I was never ready to be a daughter until right before he passed away, And have always wondered why I was born different than my siblings. (I am the black sheep) I had my dad for 27 years and because i was the odd ball out I never enjoyed him. Had I not believed in heaven, I don’t know where I’d be today mentally. But God gave me what people couldn’t & once I got clean & sober & started living right, I got my daddy back - spiritually. Yep, he used to climb those poles. Just amazing. I’m gonna ask my mom about her pregnancies with all us kids. I know my dad stopped smoking perhaps if I’m correct it was when I was in her tummy. That’s a stressful time. Hmmm…I’m sorry for your loss. May you continue to heal. Look up.
Ps - met my husband after my dads passing - and he’s an electrician. What the heck are those odds? I knew none outside a brother.

    • @Ciao4Now-111
      @Ciao4Now-111 2 года назад +3

Asked my mom this morning. No tragedies occurred in life or personally with her in ‘67, and my dad didn’t quit smoking until after my sister was born - therefore I can’t blame my black sheepness on them.

After watching this video, I have more clarity on how my PTSD symptoms aren’t always in my emotional control because so much is going on in the brain and I live with daily chronic stress. It helps me feel less negative about myself and my healing journey.
I am curious about my brain and it’s levels of hormones and how they change when I have triggers, flashbacks, or dysregulation. It is a relief to know that these cycles I consistently go through have an explanation.
What really resonated for me was your explanation about the flat period when the body lowers the cortisol. I always go through a period of feeling practically nothing after experiencing multiple triggers in a short period of time. I call these recovery periods. Last time I went to a family event, it took me almost a week to recover. I have been living like this for so long I wouldn’t even know what a balanced life feels like.
I am constantly living a rollercoaster of emotions. I have energy for a little bit, then a stress response to something and I’m fatigued and exhausted for days to weeks until my energy levels increase again only for a short period of time before a new stress response sends me back into the cycle.
I am so grateful to have come across this information today. Thank you for sharing.

Dr.Dawn, this lecture should be mandatory for everyone in government and lawyers ...ppl in govt who policy-subvert disabled rights via parameters on provision of supports/services and/or ppl in direct management of govt programs/services who violate disabled rights by lack of appropriate response to disability needs, lack of intellect/education of disability and resulting disability needs, actually exacerbate disablement and disability coping capability by failure to provide needed supports/services. This is particularly true of neurologically injured disabled who are already in survival and HPA mode already from physical disability struggle to cope to survive. The current trend of govt is to put the least intelligent person into govt positions which address the disabled people needs which increases the abuses of disabled persons' disability rights. This includes care workers in the community who are case-overloaded by profiteering corporate healthcare and support services.
Government needs to be awakened to the fact that their deprivation of appropriate supports/services needs of the disabled actually cause further disablement and thereby ultimate costs increases to government (since govt is only concerned about money/cost/budget, and not the wellbeing of their citizens).
Bad quality, too little or inappropriate disability support/service actually violates ADA etc Disability Rights laws by causing worsening of disability, maximizing incapacity or inability.

This will help others be more compassionate toward others. It can be a real physical problem, in some cases, starting in the mind, cycling back to the brain causing mental distress. The familiar patterns have to be looked at..cycles of non support, avoidance, society and attitudes.. Entitlement being a lg problem... hurt ppl hurt ppl. One can't improve by being w the minds that don't think u can live better. ITS them being insecure if u change. LIFE brings change, is usual to grow vs wither. Believe me, have had v sad times. Counselling helped. Self care and other care were still v key. Years later, husband left, it's something more than he wasn't happy. General malaise at having work, duties,Owning what u have, yr life. There s a lot of issues, attitudes u shdnt change ...cuz of friends holding u back/ fear. What success ur allowed to have..isnt theirs to define!. Good relating has to include planning how to solve problems, life matters. If you sense someone doesn't like/ want to go over that...u have to question being w that person. Doesn't want to succeed, sabotages their goals? To stay in the place, get attention for trauma and not get better in some degree? CANT pity people, u ll lose by trying to get them on track ..Have to build integrity..knowing someone wants to reach for better is good They do have to reach, even if not perfect. It's for them to do..u ll be beside cheering bc they Own the actions. Thats real support vs doing it all for them. U can't be someone's mother..u ll get flack for being honest, They don't change bc u talk about benefits of change for the better. Aid in issues but not Maintain a victim mentality. You ll be running if u let others take up your time...there s got to be reasonable reciprocation for helping ...victim steps in strengths, gains some pride and values their own life. Interdependence is good, so no person is made to feel they must do it all alone

We cannot go back and change anything that happens to us. All we can do is write it down, acknowledge that it happened, warn others and move on. Take pleasure in the little things in life that you can do for yourself to relax (bubble baths candles, good foods, and a routine. Staying there only gives your abuser more power, long after their gone. They stole enough of you, don't let them decide your future. Make a real comeback, first by putting God as number one in your life, two: don't be afraid to fall in love with the right person (pray about it) 3: no matter how far you have to dig your way out.....never stop, never give up! Keep going, eventually you will make it, to stand on top of that massive demonic heap they tried so hard to bury you in. One day you will look back, while sitting in your castle, and laugh about how they never defeated you! 🙏💕🙏

I've got insomnia tonight - or, this morning, and pretty much every time I'm supposed to go to sleep, but anyway - I stumbled on this video. I've got C-PTSD, and am a survivor of severe, ongoing childhood trauma that culminated in a dissociative disorder in adulthood. And I think in my 20s and early 30s (I am 41 now) I seemed to attract traumatic experiences and relationships somehow, though I've gotten better at boundaries and befriending and being, romantically, with "safer" people with age. I've had a lovely relationship with a fellow trauma survivor for the last 7 years and it has helped me to stabilize immensely.
I'd like to thank you, as I feel like this video helped me make sense of a lot of things. I used to wake up with my heart pounding, every morning, with my heart pounding. I relied on valium and also self-medicated with alcohol (I self-medicated until about 6 years ago, I don't drink anymore) to try and feel normal and less terrified all the time. My cortisol levels were sky-high most of my life. However, my body barely has any anymore. It's so low my PCP wants me to go to an endocrinologist to see if I have Addison's Disease. I have wondered if the excessive cortisol production kind of made my adrenals just crap out. I'm exhausted all the time. I get sick so easily. I have IBS-C and IBS-D. I had early onset arthritis that started in my 20s that has gotten so, so, so bad the last few years.
This is a great point for me to start researching causes for my physiological response with my PCP and future endocrinologist.

Trauma bonds...these can have a negative effect...Your sickness/ issue is part of your life process. The whole person always in their body..finds out u may not be guaranteed wholeness as expected. Cd happen to anyone..I have a hard time with people not understanding, w out empathy for that Lived experience of A Person. It's real, it's not A reflection of their character. I did support work w persons with brain injuries. It takes courage to learn what works, what helps them. They don't get treated well, are "not qualified" as having done work, while they re coping w the New work( healing, adapting, being responsible for balancing ...They need supports that regard them w dignity, act for their quality of life, the clients preferences are at the center...its their life! THEY deserve respect for Aiming to balance w their own particular challenges!!

Dr. Dawn ... You are a beaming ray of hope to me and I happened to come across one of your videos and never did I expect the tremendous impact you have provided me with the most insidious form of abuse that took over my life which still controls me since 2013. I have made enormous improvements which I never believed I would ever survive let alone function, even wuth limitations of mistrust, severe C PTSD that many people seem to forget when I am triggered abd at those moments I can't explain. much but my reactions tend to make people think I am crazy. I'm not crazy but evil. Hateful peopje have the ability to project their sinister empty, void of any empathy avd compassion with total lack of being accountable for their actions and some who have a heightened sense of importance but truly are nothing of value, living in a fake sense of their reality of illusions and torture the one person who actually loves and accepts who they are. They perceive this love as weakness abd have this crazy belief they have the right to hurt, steal from wuth an intention TY o destroy us. Your videos have helped me and I am healing and as an empath I have forgiving them and allowed them even thru my ignorance believing the lies and making me believe I am the answer to their prayers. I feel hurt, betrayed abd also sad for what will be their fate. I need strength to stay away from because I see what damage they are doing to me. Thank you again and God Bless your life for giving do much to those of us who are victims of their deception but survivors that lead us to Jesus who is the answer to some of the things that has been the hardest to live with. Your dedication and countless hours of your time has I believe saved many lives. Thank you and I appreciate you fir you have helped me abd I have knowledge in areas that I never believed possible. Thank you for this video. Unfortunately here in the UK, those subjected to trauma and abuse are pathologised with personality disorder by the National Health Service who do NOT understand the impact of abuse and how it affects and changes us neurobiologically. I was raised by narcissistic parents, was gang-raped at gun-point at aged 18, was psychologically abused in adulthood (intimate partner violence), was financially exploited by a female pretending to be my friend (a nurse), and have had housing insecurity and on and off homelessness ever since, and was then subjected to more gaslighting and harm by the mental health team who told me I just need to learn to have better relationships and what happened to me was minor. There was nothing minor about what happened to me. They then diagnosed me major psychiatric disorder and referred me to a group therapy sessions for women with personality disorders. I don't have a personality disorder. I have C-PTSD.

Regardless, working out an effective treatment plan or creating in your imagination how you would like life to be (vs. how you don't want it to be / loathe /detest becomes like a moth to a flame) and figure out what you need and how you can get, is a great self-help approach. Absolutely work on other modalities: LSD recent research suggests LSD help tremendously with PTSD; other mainstream meds that might help; talk therapy; self-examination; workshops, support groups; ensuring diet is rich in vitamins and minerals and you're drinking LOTS of water (dehydration can lead to symptoms that mimic depression); anything and everything to right the boat. Take care of yourself.

adults LIVED me...WITH THE SOLE EXCEPTION OF MY "MOTHER"...
But as her abuse was increasingly more dangerous..coupled with NO normal love from her I became EXTREMELY anxious constantly....never knowing what she was going to do say nex...later in life ..one brother and a set of TRULY TWISTED TWINS joined in her abuse and degredation...
I also had to run the house (my father hated to ask me but he was overwhelmed just providing enough money while "mother"pissed it away .I had a check cashing card at the grocery at 14)
The twins ended up stealing everything my father left for all of us...
The manipulations and thefts over the years coupled with INSANE responsibilities and the final theft left me in poverty...while my mother had loaned most of my siblings a lot of money for homes..( which I recently found out is BANK FRAUD)

Thank you. I realize this video is largely a learning tool for students, yet I cannot find adequate words to express my appreciation, Dr.
I've suffered trauma, I'm not stupid or mentally ill. I understood this information well, and for that I am very grateful. "The inner child" and the "manager" might work for some patients, but others (and by others I mean myself) might benefit from having their condition explained to them in purely academic analysis. Not because I think I'm intelligent, but precisely because I am not.
I don't know if this will be of value to you, Dr., but I had an incredibly successful year before the last trauma. There have been three major traumas in my life, all loss. As I slowly learn to breathe again and live in my new shell, I honestly can't imagine an event that could effect me one way or another. It is the worst thing that has ever happened to me, and no amount of success or productivity prior to that event could soften the blow.
    Thanks again, Doc.

U are my Wonder Woman at this point . U always speak on topics that are answers to my difficulties. I have noticed something I haven't heard anyone speak on.. Caregivers go numb after seeing so many traumatic events . It seems it's a coping mechanism which I have personally seen in doctors and nurses . Can physicians and caregivers end up with a personality disorder or mental illness ? If so how does that look? I think health care professionals get burnt out and if it's not handled properly it turns into a person incapable of feeling emotions . Some would call it possession if they are relegious however I'm wondering if you can do a video on this topic . We will need this info especially since we've been in a pandemic where death and illness is at an all time high. Also as a patient , I would love to hear your response because I feel sorry for those who no longer connect emotionally due to seeing such heinous things. I believe this will help others who have chronic illness to avoid being quick to judge a healthcare professional of being mean , cold and uncaring . Maybe the ability to care exceeding the ability to survive the job! Does anyone else think this would be a helpful topic ?

It changed my appearance as I couldn't raise arms to bath, do my hair or makeup.

Doing this for nursing CEU's. Good info. Relevant especially for HealthCare Providers who are considered "facilitators of healing".
Providers deal with illness whether traumatic injury or terminal.
The Providers develop professional bonds and invest much energy in facilitating healing or providing treatment, and often carry that energy until they are ready to transmute/release it. All crisis events should have individual and or group intervention.

So much great information here. I am trying to navigate the aftermath of a loss of function, and seek to understand what happened to cause it. A link to the article or study on which this presentation is based would be very helpful. I saw that the article was referenced toward the end, and really expected the link to be provided in the video description but can't find it. Please add the link for the study.
Also it would be greatly appreciated if this video's description could include a list of potential practitioners (or even just a list of TYPES of practitioners to look for) with this level of expertise, for those of us who are seeking supports and are doing our best to be our own advocates despite the limitations that we're dealing with. I say "we" because I understand I can't be the only one struggling with this.
One last request. I am running out of ideas for how to bridge the chasm between psychological TBI, mental health care, and the legal world in terms of disability determination. Counselors cannot help with the legal aspect, and lawyers and judges should not practice medicine. Survivors of trauma are expected to bridge that gap and I don't know what I'm missing. I've been at this for years now, and my cognitive capacity seems to be dwindling. Where does one go from here to access the needed support?

It's unfortunate that so many of us have gone through or are going through traumatic things. Please seek a Licensed therapist because they are trained and can help you through this. Always ask to see their license and if things don't work out the first time don't worry it doesn't mean therapy doesn't work it means you need to find a therapist that you feel more comfortable with because you will need their support through some tough times and it's important that you trust them. Put it this way if you broke your leg you would see your doctor well your brain which controls all your limbs your speech, etc. (for centuries various people thought the soul resided in it), is much more important to seek a therapist, or psychologist (a psychiatrist is an MD doctor who has only had two years of mental health training and is the one who prescribes the medications only go if your therapist or psychologist think you need to see one). You are worth it and you deserve it! good luck on your journey I believe in you!

Thank you so much for sharing this thoughtful and compassionate message. You’ve captured such an important point-healing from trauma often requires professional support, just like healing a physical injury would. Finding a therapist you trust is key, and it’s great advice to remind people that if the first therapist doesn’t feel like the right fit, that doesn’t mean therapy won’t work. It’s really about finding someone who understands you and can walk with you through the process of healing.
Your comparison between seeking help for a broken leg and seeking help for the brain is spot on. Mental health is just as important, if not more, given how deeply it affects every part of our lives. The brain is complex, and having a licensed therapist, psychologist, or psychiatrist who can guide you through tough times is essential.
I also love how you emphasized that people are worth the effort of finding the right support. So often, people struggle with feeling undeserving of care, but as you said, everyone is worth it, and no one has to go through the healing journey alone. Thank you again for your kindness and encouragement-it’s clear you really care about the well-being of others.

In the past, was severely abused as an child by 2 people, including psychological abuse. And my first relationship that was extremely physically abusive as well. I have horror stories that you wouldn't believe. Hollywood can't wrap around this. I should've died many, many times besides car wrecks and tons other stuff. God is the ONLY reason I'm here. I've been on monitors and watched my heart rate go through the roof when my husband starts in with one of his nasty controlling episodes. My glucose is higher than it should be. I've not had cortisol levels checked when they do these metabolic blood work rounds. I believe the HPA axis may have something to do with the asthma and inflammatory over response.

Hi Dr. Lots of valuable information. I’m always thinking in terms of hypercortisolism, not hypo. I have lots of trauma issues which resulted in pituitary dependent Cushing’s Disease. Only took 20 yrs to get finally get properly diagnosed. They didn’t figure it out until I thought that I was getting Alzheimer’s. My brain was fried and now I’m dealing with an acquired brain injury.
Drs really need to start considering cortisol’s role in mental health and metabolic syndrome. I mean they do, but they don’t! They need to learn how to properly test and diagnose imbalances.
Many people do not think Cushing’s is as rare as it was previously thought to be. I love when I meet a new dr and tell them that I THINK that I have it and they start telling me all the reasons why I don’t!! 😂 Surprise!
I just got a new primary last week and I said “I present to you, a middle aged, post menopausal woman in need of losing 40 lbs.” Many of us do not have all the physical symptoms. I turned around 360 so she could see I was as I described and said “Now, prepare to have your mind blown 🤯 This is what Cushing’s Disease looks like!” Her popped out of her head “WHAT?!!! When, how were you diagnosed?” I asked her to identify what symptoms that I was missing!
I know all about cortisol rushing through the body 🔥!! It seriously feels hot, that hormonal heat that women experience when other hormones get out of whack, but there’s no cooling off. Takes a neurosurgeon to cool this water down!
Then I went through 15 months of adrenal insufficiency waiting for my HPA axis to wake up. That was more miserable than the active Cushing’s.
I’m 3 yrs post op, and began having symptoms of a recurrence about a year ago, while going through several months of severe stress. Seems to be no avoiding it. MRI is clear but my ACTH and saliva cortisol levels are almost as high as pre op. I’m trying to understand more about the PTSD and HPA dysregulation, in an effort to get this under control.
I need to get the trauma issues worked out. I’ve been in therapy for years, so I feel like I’ve dealt with most of it. However, I definitely seem to be hypersensitive and experience events as more traumatic than seems reasonable. I’m always in fight or flight mode and it’s exhausting, mentally and physically.
If you have thoughts or suggestions, please share them!
    Thanks for your video!

I’m 50 yrs old now, with major depressive disorder, anxiety, addiction, anorexia and don’t respond to any antidepressants that are available. Tried EST. Nothing. I’m at my end rope. Don’t know what else to do.

My sense is that the trauma is the root of all of the other presenting symptoms. EMDR might be something else to try.

For those of us with cancers, fibromyalgis, major depressive disorder, PTSD, etc " friends" and family vanish. Especially with chronic illnesses. So we feel lost in an ocean. Pray new people enter your life. Try to get fresh air once a day. And tell those you love and meet to read, " The Spoon Theory." It explains how we try but sometimes just can't participate with energy as if we could simply "will" us to be "normal."
