    Why can you divide by Y (trying to solve for 1/f) if we are assuming Y=0 at f?

      I don't exactly follow the question, but here are some translation answers:
      Before the lens we don't show translation approaching the lens because the ray has no angle and nothing changes.
      Inside the lens we don't show translation because this is a "thin lens" approximation.
      After the lens the translation term is the [ 1 f 0 1] matrix.
