    Funny, I just ordered those ACO prefilter sponges yesterday for the same reason, tired of the finer amazon ones clogging so quick. Seeing your comment on the ACO site about how much better they were sold them to me.

    Always wondered how breeders produce those swordtails when the main fin used in breeding (g) is distorted.
    😉

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  17 дней назад

      With lyretails, breeders usually cross out to varieties that don't have extended gonopodiums, which lowers the yield of the fancier strains. This is one reason they are expensive. With veiltails, I THINK the males are able to breed and the offspring will be able to breed, but they are so new to the hobby that I'll have to wait until I get more info to be certain.

    Can you get Hyphessobrycon Peugeoti?…Similar to Racoon Tetra but red form.

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  17 дней назад

      I can get H. peugeoti from a breeder in Europe. However, they would retail at about $125/each, so I've never brought them in. I don't think the market will bear that high of a price. I'll have to wait until the price drops or I find a source with a more reasonable price point.

    Not sure how you get your Red-chinned Panchax to get along so we'll what's the secret Dan?

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  17 дней назад

      I think just having a group of them makes all the difference. Most killifish keepers keep just 1, 2, or maybe 3 pairs together. In these cases, one male is likely to rise to dominance and harass the others. If they are kept in a decent sized group, the problem is greatly mitigated. The cover provided for the plants also helps by providing line-of-sight blocks and places of refuge.

    Non of your fancy finned swordtail males are fertile due to the long fin gonopodium. The females need to be crossed with male swordtails with the basic matching colors that have normal size gonopodiums. Those males will likely not be veil or lyre tails. I don't think its fair to sell folks pairs of the fancy finned swordtails without telling them they will not produce fry due to the long fin gonopodium males.

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  9 дней назад

      There's generally a handful of males with functional gonopodiums in each group, and the females tend to be gravid when we sell them. We do have a disclaimer on their posting letting the customer know this. We've had quite a few fry here and we've had a few customers also reach out to let us know they'e got fry from them.

    • @al20o33
      @al20o33 6 дней назад

      @@DansFish its good that you have a disclaimer. though most folks wont read it. you should discuss this issue when you do fishroom tours and highlight all the long fin gonopodium swordtails and similar livebearers.

  • @SpeikobraRote

    I really dislike the way some breeders are going to "longer fins on everything no matter what!" those Platies look super sad and uncomfy wobbling around like goldfish that cant even move right anymore. Really.. they might be healthy but the way they swim doesnt look healthy or thriving at all. A horrible trend in the hobby in my opinion.
