Description: "Kees van Dongen was born on January 1, 1877, in Delfshaven near Rotterdam. Early in his artistic endevours, he was inspired by the Impressionists and influenced by their style. Van Dongen studied at the academy of Rotterdam but did not finish his studies there.
He earned his livelihood working for the magazines "Groene" and "Rotterdam Neusblad." His racy drawings of life around the habor were published with great scandal. In 1897, he went to Paris, where he lived in Bateau-Lavoir. There he worked as an illustrator for "Revoue Blanche" and "L'assiette au Beurre." In 1903, van Dongen exhibited his works publicly for the first time, and later he showed with Matisse in the Vollard Gallery. The Dutch painter became associated with the group "Fauves" (wild beasts) in 1905.
Nonetheless, his affinity for the German Expressionists can be recognized in his works. Indicative of his work is the intense use of color, which increased the expressiveness of his paintings. In 1908, he became a member of the group of German Expressionists "Die Brücke" (the Bridge) and exhibited with them. At the end of World War I, van Dongen was discovered by the upperclass. He then painted many portraits, becoming a chronicler of the 1920's and 1930's. His expressive portraits, likenesses, and landscapes received much appreciation and achieved success through his unique coloring.
Kees van Dongen died on May 28, 1968, in Monte Carlo."

Awesome paintings. Very Original . I am learning from these Artists. My twin already taught me a lot. He has his own Art Channel. So after years of abandoning Art, I picked it up again . Though I am not good I decided to let my doodles speak for themselves. I learn as I go. This is very good.

Kees van Dongen, de son nom de naissance Cornelis Théodorus Marie van Dongen, est un peintre néerlandais naturalisé français, né le 26 janvier 1877 à Delfshaven, arrondissement de Rotterdam (Pays-Bas) et mort le 28 mai 1968 à Monaco.
Biographie
Kees van Dongen à Rotterdam-Delfshaven.
Kees van Dongen est né à Delfshaven, alors une ville de la banlieue de Rotterdam qui en est devenue un arrondissement, dans une famille appartenant à la classe moyenne. Il est le deuxième d'une fratrie de quatre enfants. En 1892, à l'âge de 16 ans, Kees van Dongen débute ses études à l'Académie royale des beaux-arts de Rotterdam, où il travaille avec J. Striening et J. G. Heyberg. Durant cette période (1892-1897), van Dongen fréquente le quartier rouge du port, où il dessine des scènes de marins et de prostituées.
Il fait également la connaissance d'Augusta Preitinger, comme lui étudiante en peinture à l'Académie.
D'inspiration anarchiste, il illustre en 1895 avec Jan Krulder l’édition hollandaise de l'ouvrage de Pierre Kropotkine intitulé L’Anarchie1.
En 1897, il demeure à Paris pour plusieurs mois1. Il y retourne en décembre 1899 pour rejoindre Augusta Preitinger (« Guus »), qu’il avait rencontrée à l’Académie. Ils se marient le 11 juillet 1901.
À Paris, il rencontre Félix Fénéon, par lequel il se voit confier en 1901 un numéro de L'Assiette au beurre, Petite histoire pour petits et grands nenfants.
En 1904, il expose au Salon des indépendants et se lie avec Maurice de Vlaminck et Henri Matisse1. Bientôt, il commence à exposer ses œuvres à Paris, notamment l’exposition controversée de 1905 du Salon d'automne, où exposait également, entre autres, Henri Matisse. Les couleurs vives de leurs œuvres seront à l’origine du nom de ce groupe de peintres : les fauves.
Après la Première Guerre mondiale, il s'installe près du bois de Boulogne et fréquente les milieux privilégiés1. Il a vécu notamment dans le palais Rose du Vésinet, appartenant à la marquise Luisa Casati.
Il est décoré chevalier de la Légion d'honneur en 1926 et officier de la Légion d'honneur en 19542. Mais ce n'est qu'en 1929 qu'il obtient la nationalité française.
Il préside le jury de Miss France 1929 et de Miss France 1939.
Il a aussi été brièvement membre du mouvement expressionniste allemand, Die Brücke.
En octobre 1941, en compagnie des peintres et sculpteurs Charles Despiau, Paul Belmondo, Derain, Dunoyer de Ségonzac, de Vlaminck, Van Dongen accepta de participer à un « voyage d’études » en Allemagne organisé par Arno Breker. La contrepartie de ce déplacement, vivement « conseillé » par le gouvernement allemand, devait être la libération d'artistes français alors prisonniers de guerre. Ce voyage dans l'Allemagne nazie très largement exploité par la propagande leur fut à tous sévèrement reproché.
Kees van Dongen est le frère du sculpteur Jean van Dongen.

If you find a foreign, unauthorized watermark on a banknote, you can only think of one thing: it’s fake! The same is true of the paintings attributed to van Dongen: These paintings were painted by Oskar Kokoschka, the hidden markings show this.

Methinks I was born too late, and on the wrong side of the Atlantic; try as I may, I cannot seem to entice anywhere near the quantity of beautiful young women to pose for their portraits, in various states of undress, as did Van Dongen. Ah well, back to the drawing board.
