I don't know what I would have thought of this music in 1967, the year I turned 17, but I was definitely ready for "A Rainbow in Curved Air," when it came out early in 1969. I heard it on late night FM radio, and made a bee line for the record store, that was right across the street from the college dorm where I lived, on the north side of Chicago, and bought the copy that I still have, and cherish. I'd not done the digging that would have brought me to this album, so I'm glad that The Algorithm brought me here, to be educated! Thanks for doing the homework, and sharing the results! I've subscribed, so you may just see me again in the comments section! All the best!

I remember being stunned by the presence of several Frank Lloyd Wright homes a few blocks north of there. My family had lived at Armitage and Cicero when I was born, but moved away in 1960, when my dad’s company did the “promotion and transfer” thing.
That is a fantastic find, Alex. Probably the cleanest copy in existence, too! You inspired me to pull out my Music For The Gift CD on Cortical. It has 4 recordings from 1960 to 1965: The Gift, Bird Of Paradise, Mescalin Mix and Concert For Two Pianos And Five Tape Recorders (with La Monte Young). Each are very interesting works and show Terry's progress towards the sound on Reed Streams and beyond. Thanks for sharing what must be one of the jewels in your already fine collection. It was a pleasure to see and hear it.

Such a wonderful gem. I bet you enjoyed sitting down with the album for a nice, deep listening session. Trying to strengthen my Terry Riley collection (and understand) so I can appreciate how much you will enjoy the record. Congratulations, Alex. Cheers! Shawn
An album I've never seen except in photos. You ARE very lucky. I saw him once at The Exploritorium in San Francisco. It was in a small room and we were in the first row. That was in the 80's.

Interesting you mention the potential for gassing due to the silkscreen... as that is exactly what happened to the copy I had. Congrats on sourcing a good copy.
My first copy of it came sealed, in this heavy but soft PVC sleeve. That's what caused the off gasing. Thankfully, even if it looks bad on hte record, it plays great, which is not hte case. of most records I have that experienced similar damage. At least, the cover was literally new, mint. So cool Alex got his!
nice little history of this release despite my allergy to the word "grail" ; ) i've eyed the reissue for awhile but you're right, due for a proper release.
@@diamond_marimba nope not in person..the few copies I have seen over the years have been mostly ebay and of course go for money even then..lol..glad you got yourself a copy bro ❤️.
forgot to credit the artist of the jacket: Helen Burke

Alex, I dig the groovy vapor trails, they dance nicely with the music. 1967 was an amazing year for anyone who had two ears.
thanks Michael, you're the only one that got the the end of the video haha
Dope. Disappointed it wasn’t the greatest album of 1967 IMHO Cher - With Love
see this is a better joke than yours jon, take note

glad I have you a reason to revisit those. a couple of those pieces I've only read about and look forward to hearing them for the first time.
Did not expect to see that one but definitely qualifies as a legitimate grail. Nice overview, literally.
What a piece! Congratulations, both for its finding, and for the video.
thanks!
Congrats Alex! I can appreciate this score for you! Enjoyed watching this one! Thanks for the history lesson too! Cheers, Jon
thanks Jon!
Hell of a score. Edit: just noticed you hit 1k subs too, congrats!

Well worth the click bait title! I bought all of those Cortical CDs of early Riley works and forgot to actually look for the originals. Thanks, Chris
well it's the golden age of the reissue now, so hopefully it these early works get properly done on wax
Great score!
Love his version of You're No Good
yes, was just listening to it yesterday on a boot that came out last year on wax
@@diamond_marimba yeah... I got the boot a few years ago. Amazon I think oddly...

i use the word very sparingly haha
Really awesome sound sample! Thanks for sharing and talking about this album! Is the sound sample representative of how the whole album sounds?
yes in that it's psychedelic AF
Big one 💖.
a real piece of history aside from the amazing music, have you ever come across one?

had to move one of the wfmu scores to swing this, but well worth it for me
Wowza
Doesn't look like it was posted in a proper record mailer. You almost ruined your holy grail with a knife.
the record was tightly packed between 4 stiffeners, well packed
Sgt. Pepper’s!!!!
