  • Join us for a 3 day backpacking adventure in the forest. Otto and I hiked the Soonwaldsteig in the West of Germany, one of the newer German long-distance trails and a bit of a hidden gem.
We explored the beautiful remote woodlands, wild camped in an old castle and I tried cold-soaking for the first time....
Stay tuned for the second part....
(Disclaimer: The video was filmed in october, but I wanted to finish our JoGLE series first which is why I'm only uploading this video now).
    Lots of love,

That is heartbreaking that Otto was shot and is terrified of shots and sudden loud noises, but he’s got you and the care and concern you have for him is heartwarming Ms Elli❤️
I don’t know if it would be an option, but I’ve had friends that had dogs that were scared of the same that had compression vests to put on their furry kiddos
They do help some in some cases, but it’s understandable of his fear for certain.
Another thought would maybe be a front chest carrier for him. It would be additional weight on you with your pack also, but when the lil guy freezes up it could be a possibility 🤔
Aside from that, this stretch of this hike was amazing, the history, the scenery, everything 😍
I could not imagine overnighting in a centuries old castle ruins like that, incredible just to imagine life as it was during those days😃
Really like how the counties, park systems, etc work there and thank you so much for explaining that.
Cold soaking, you’re much braver than I Ms Elli. That would be culinary shock indeed, unless of course it’s ice cream or sherbet😋
Take care, keep safe and see you on the next segment of this adventure👍🏻🙏🏻😃😊

Thank you so much for the kind words and encouragement, that means so much :) I've already tried the compression vest but unfortunately that didn't help 😥 as for the carrier: until now I was shying away from it because of the extra weight and volume. And it's kind of difficult to get a carrier that fits him and doesn't bend his spine in a weird way.... the ones that give support are quite bulky.... 🤔 don't really know....
Thank you for following along :)

What a beautiful trail. And so cool to camp in the castle. I never realized before that Germans say “yeah” kind of like Americans say “umm” or Canadians say “eh”. Sort of like punctuation. So interesting to me how we all pick up our own little habits. It’s nice to see how patient you are with little Otto. Poor baby. I hope the noises didn’t go on too long. He looked so scared.

Hahaha, that's so true 😅 but probably not even a German thing, maybe just my weird habit 🙈 trying to work on it, but it's hard if you're thinking and simultaneously talking in a language that's not your native language ... thank you so much for following along :)

What a cool site to wild camp ⛺️ Elli 👍🏻 peace and quiet.
There’s a wood here in Shropshire next to an active quarry and they blast once a week which makes the ground thump. Both dog and walkers jump! Feel for little Otto. Not a lot you can do, just ride it out. In the Summer there’s a farm near the quarry that uses a Gas Gun to scare the birds. Another way to scare the bejesus out of us 😅
Looking forward to part two. Thank you once again for share. Very different vlog 👌🏻excellent.

Beautiful trail and trip, Elli! Sorry to see Otto was so petrified, he’s such a sweet dog! 😢Having a rescue is so rewarding bc you give a dog a caring, loving life that he/she never had or felt before. Hopefully he recovered and is doing well! I commend you on trying the cold-soaking. I can see doing it in the warmer months where a hot meal might not have as much appeal as when temps are colder. Thanks for sharing, and happy trails.🥾🏕️

What a lovely experience staying in such an old and historic site.
Poor little Otto, maybe if another dog came along it might be a calming company. I suspect he’s too heavy to carry if he’d even let you.
There should be a sign at the bottom of the trail saying when the mine would be setting off explosives. You are a champion for rescuing Otto with his very understandable condition. 🏆❤️🥂

I actually didn't know that when adopting him as the shelter had no information on his life before the shelter. I only saw the bullet under his skin later on an x-ray picture 😬 it all made sense then 😥 I actually do carry him when it happens to try and get away from the noise. Normally, when he realises that the noise is behind, he can keep going.... but carrying him is quite hard for me, so not really something I can do for miles and miles which is why I'm always anxious to hear something 😬😪 thank you so much for following along :)

Growing up we had Dachshunds. I have two brothers and we each were given a puppy. Though these dogs were generations apart they were related.
Our dogs hated Independence Day as there was always fireworks that drove them frantic. Likely a Dachshund trait.
Some cultures have a sling that they carry babies in. I wonder if you could get one made or buy to put him in till you got away. Probably wouldn’t weigh much either.

It looked almost perfect. Oh lovely lovely sweet Otto, living the life and then that 😢. He’s so lucky to have you Elli and he knows he’s safe with you. We looked after a dog that was petrified of the thunder and lightening (me too) and in desperation, I looked up on line how I could help him. I found something called a “thunder jacket/shirt”. He loved wearing it and it had acupressure points on it. OK he was better off from wearing it but it didn’t get rid of the fear 100% but I do feel that it helped. I just looked it up and it says calming for all types of fears ie fireworks etc. I’m looking forward to seeing the next bit of your adventure. x PS. I might get one for myself 😂

    • @ellihikes
      @ellihikes  7 месяцев назад

Thank you so much Rique 🤗 I actually bought one of these shirts too (was quite expensive) a while back for the NY fireworks.... But it didn't help Otto at all unfortunately.... He was still shaking so much and it didn't help to calm him down 😓 I'm really happy that he's not afraid of thunder at all.... like he can clearly distinguish "natural" loud noises like thunder from "man-made" shooting noises. So interesting!

Thank you so much, I really appreciate you following along :) I love castles too, always to much to see and to wonder how people back then would have lived there :) Otto is a rescue from Croatia, so probably a lot of different breeds in him - our vet thinks that there's very likely a Jack Russell Terrier and a Dachshund in him :)

He really has and it actually seemed to get worse last year as we've encountered shooting noises quite often during our hikes 😥😬 Unfortunately his fear is firmly rooted in him and his survival instinct just kicks in, which makes any kind of training and desensitisation very very hard....

Thank you so much for the kind words, that means so much :) I'm only doing the videos in English at the moment. I started it that way because a lot of people in Germany watch RUclips videos in English too and as I'm hiking a lot in the UK, I hoped that people from there and other parts of Europe would probably be interested in the videos too. I wanted to make them accessible to as many people as possible. I've been thinking about doing some videos in German too, but it's a lot of work which is why I've been shying away from it until now....

    Hello Elli and Otto...
First of all, how's your finger that you split open in the UK? (Hope it's all healed up)
Shame you can't wild camp without getting a fine, but that spot was pretty nice anyway because that castle looked like a great place to camp (But not on Halloween lol)
but Some beautiful views around there, and you always seem to find the best spots.
    Cold Noodles Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
I can understand the no fire laws But no camp stoves that's so strange, not that it matters if you forgot to bring it !!!
Do you know Elli you can buy bags that heat food without fire by using a built-in heat dispenser (If you have never seen them before let us know and I will send you a link) Also you can buy HOT coffee in a can, which only gets hot after you open it.
So cute when you were checking Otto for ticks, he looked so content being groomed, and then treat time. But then so sad to see him so afraid at the end. I know this was back in October but give him a hug from me.
    As always Take care 😋✌

Thank you so much for following along and always leaving nice comments 😊 my finger is fine, but the nail still hasn't grown back completely which is crazy after all that time 😳
The food bags that heat up by themselves: I know them but didn't even think about them.... They probably are quite heavy and expensive though? Yes, they were very strict with the stove, but it was so dry and as there are big woodlands, they obviously wouldn't want to risk it....
