Dignam deliberately provoked Costigan to see if he could be trusted. (If it was a legit opening to look for a fight, Dignam would have fought back, but he didn't.) He wasn't convinced by Costigan's simple swatting away of the coffee cup. He has to make sure and it's why he follows up with it "It's wasn't a joke, just because you play a tough guy, doesn't mean you are you lace-curtain irish pussy" It's to see if he's in the whole thing as a real cop or just somebody trying to look like a cop. The punch and genuine intent to hurt him, convinced Dignam. It revealed to him the genuine stress Costigan was under. It's why after Costigan hits him and they're in the car, where he reveals that they think there's a rat in the investigation unit. Nobody else was privy to that information except Dignam and Queenan. It's probably the most sincere and honest Dignam is in the whole movie and shows he trusts Costigan.
Let's remember too when Sullivan tried to put the blame for Queenan's death on Costigan. Dignam denied the accusation vehemently. He knew Billy would never have turned on Queenan like that and that Billy was a good man through and through. And in the end, he avenges both their deaths.
Martin Sheen brings so much heart to this film, like when his voice quivers at 1:01 (and the delicate soundtrack right there) it reminds us that theyre all scared, its a tense & delicate situation for everyone involved
I reckon Dignam was deliberately trying to provoke Billy into hitting him, as if to say "Take your anger out on me, then maybe you can get your act together."
Dignam is a good guy! But a guy who is extremely cautious of who he trusts! He winds Costigan up because by doing this he allows him to expose his true feelings/loyalties and emotions!
Dignam is a classic tough guy. Shows animosity to the guys he respects and ambivalence to people he doesn't. Sometimes being hard on someone shows you who they really are. Fake niceties gets you no where

Queenan: "Hang tight for me, kid." A sentimental line, showing how Queenan looks upon Billy as a son....and it's terrific! Makes Queenan's death later on all the more devastating.
Martin Sheen is one of those actors that can just gives you a warm feeling. Like you can feel the love Queenan has for both of the boys. When he asked him to hang on a little bit longer you know he just wants to drag him out now, but unfortunately can’t. Him and Billy death were 2 of the saddest in movie history for me. The way they took both of them out was hard to watch.

Costigan actually punches Dingham in the face and 30 seconds later in the car he's talking to him calmly like nothing happened. Actually that's like the only time in the whole film that Dingham talks to someone without laying down the insults. I think he actually respected Costigan for standing up to him finally LoL
I think the character of Dingham really ties the whole movie together. To defeat Costello he's completely adopted the persona of an absolute piece of shit. He's turned himself into the kind of monster he wanted to destroy. When the farce is finally up, he drops all pretenses and executes Sullivan in cold blood just to get some justice for his partners. Beneath the mask he was actually a good, loyal man. His arc perfectly closes a story about the struggle between truth and deception.
No es arrogancia. Lo provoca deliberadamente, lo lleva al límite para que expresara sus verdaderos sentimientos. Su sonrisa es porque él ha confirmado que puede confiar en Constigan.
Billy Costigan is one heartbreaking character. Most of Scorsese protagonists are not Immaculate people, but Billy is genuinely a good person. All he wanted to do is escape the cycle of crime and violence in his family by making something out of his life. He was raised by a blue-collar dad with mob ties, and a mother from an upscale family, who would not accept him and his dad. When he was orphaned, all he wanted to do to was be a good police officer. What he has to do to earn validation is both harrowing, depressing and truly tragic. He can't even catch a break. Nobody has his back. He is exploited by the criminals he has to infiltrate, and the police he has to work for. I could not even figure who to hate more. Dignam could not even appreciate how Billy is risking his life everyday for them. On top of it, he just has to deliberately be an asshole. Dignam, Queenan, and Costigan. True heroes. Queenan was there as the father, the compass. True North. Dignam was there as the older brother, willing to do whatever it took to complete the mission and his people going. Costigan was the rookie with the ideology to get done what needed to be done. Dignam didn't have to kill Sullivan. He could have let it go by the books and walked away. He did it because Queenan and Costigan were his partners and they deserved justice.
