The more I see of Lang in interviews, the more I like him... A "right sized" studio is refreshing to see. Many people just collect junk to make their equipment list look more impressive... myself included, but I am downsizing...
I am 15 and this is exactly the sort of studio I would want when I'm older, a nice homely environment that's not intimidating (however the dream is to have a wall of snares somewhere in my house...that'd be nice)
This is a great time to be collecting gear... its cheaper then ever and the quality is pretty good on most stuff. The trick is to upgrade by selling the stuff you don't need to pay for the new gear. Over time this tactic can really pay off.
***** yeah I go into each and every shop I can to see if I can find some real bargains. The main idea at the moment is to save up and buy myself a really high quality set up now while I'm still young so that it will last me throughout my life and I won't be bogged down with other financial issues. Btw I am a big fan of your videos and cymbals
Cheers! You don't need to buy a really top end set! just buy a good, second hand set (pearl, tama, yamaha, etc) and learn how to skin and tune them like a pro. Then save $$$ for your cymbals because they are usually the most expensive part of the kit and break more frequently.
***** I've been looking at the meinal Benny greb byzance sand series. A pack of Hi-hats, crash and ride would cost me £750-800 (I'm not sure the price for over there) but anyway what do you think of them? Good buy? Maybe you should get hold of some and see what could be improved upon? Could even make it into a video xD Thanks again
Thomas, you are amazing drummer. I've been 2 times in your live. One time in Gianna Nannini live concert ( in S. Benedetto Del Tronto,Italy). Another time it was a live demo about Sonor and Mainl in "Disma Music Show" (Rimini, Italy). Is was amazing, you played 45 minutes no stop!!! Your home studio is fantastic! I don't know if that now is the same or maybe better :-) I think that you are one of the best drummer and you can chose the best energy drink ;-) without advertising and with high quality (non chimical, you know?) In Italy famous energy drinks like that in this video cost euros 2.50 per can. The best energy drink costs more or less of 4 euros per can. Thomas, thanks for your amazing job!
LanceCampeau stole my thunder so I was inclined to + his comment below. Mr. Thomas Lang is a guy who knows how great his life is. He is THE man to hire if a musical situation arises that requires a professional. Awesome!
Everyone seems to think that you need a large, great sounding room with ridiculously high ceilings to record the drums properly. You obviously don´t, as is evident here. Weckl is also recording some ridiculously great sounding drums in his less than perfect home studio. Phil Collins recorded the vocals for Mama in a living room with all sorts of equipment scattered around. In other words, you don´t need a fancy studio to make great sounding records.
It's easy to do Arnold impression when your from the same country ;) Thomas still has some hints of an accent now and then, but most Americans wont hear it.
I promise every native English speaking American would hear his accent and recognise that English is his second language. This isn't to say his English is bad, quite opposite it's super impressive and expressive. The thing just is that you either sound 100% native or you don't, and if you don't, a 100% native will know.
I find it amazing that this talented handsome gentleman still has time to actually make music. I know what I would be doing if I were him. Fuckin...Errrrrday....Allldayyyy.
I am an amazing drummer, and it makes me happy to see, and listen to your accomplishments. I stole some things from ya,lol! and your style is a lot like mine so u put things into perspective for me. Thanks for sharing Thomas. much love bro!
hey Thomas do you produce music for others musician too? just wonder if you have some complete rock song that ready to drop my own the lyric on for sale or if you know some body do some thing like what i am asking for please let me know thanks
Amazing playing and sound - nice to hear someone can still actually play - thanks for the tips. What mic-pre-amps are you using? What desk are you referring to (are you using the pres on your desk or separate mic pre amps?)
Rogg... yes you can get great results for dirt cheap these days. I agree with that. The variety of tools (digital domain) that are available for musicians today is just staggering. From advanced drum and instrument samplers/virtual instruments to pitch correction and amp/mic modeling. Not to mention the effects and plugins ....which are limitless. It truly is amazing what can be done in the box. The problem is that eventually people want a polished mix to sell or give.... something that represents all that song writing, rehearsing, recording, editing, mixing, hair- pulling. and frustration. The were the box and a cheap interface fall short...big time. For demos and per-production, the box is great. cheap and quick...if you know what you are doing... a full blown disaster and creativity killer if you don't. The $20 preamps and cheap, low voltage, IC based input stages in most interfaces are crap compared to a high quality outboard preamp that cost $1000+ for ONE channel. I know that most people want to believe that they are similar...but they are not...period. The come the plugins... most of which are digital emulations of real outboard gear. Sure they are fun to mess around with...and they kind of do what the real ones do...but the bottom line is that a digital emulation is not the real thing that it emulates. A digital emulation will never be as good as the original...period. Its impossible. Also its like saying that spanking it in front of a computer is just like a real woman in front of you. Im not saying all this to hurt anyone's feelings. its the exact opposite. I want to prevent my aspiring fellow musicians and engineers from wasting their precious energy and creativity with nonsense. Pretty much there are two good pieces of equipment responsible for Thomas Langs home studio sound.... the well- tuned DW drum set and, more importantly, Thomas Lang himself.
And guess what, he just uses one of the best drums avaliable and one the best mics avaliable. He mix them with his programs and his sounds are always awesome. So maybe you could'nt get the point.
This is Great but yeh not really much 2 say on this but Awesome. But Arnold Schwarzenegger is cool your a film star Thomas Lang like him in Drumming not sure about movie wise. because i have never seen Thomas Lang in a Action Movie yet till this day?..
/watch?v=Wfte05MJmBw 0:45, that's a 16 channel Presonus Studiolive (which does not appear on this video), and if I think he has a Mackie Onyx at the other side of the computer for mixing, that should be enough, but they didn't even show the equipment for recording.
But why do I know so many EDM-artists whose tunes sound amazing AND are mainly produced on macs, "just" with plug-ins like NI, Arturia etc..? ;) Meantime I myself also get pretty good sounding results out of my Mac although I don't own any hardware-based synths, compressors etc...
just fyi, we live in the year 2013. Most of the professional gears that older musicians used, are obsolete now because they are expensive and a vst can do the same thing ten times better. you dont need an actual physical eq or compressor. You just need guitar rig and good kontakt libraries. as he said he has a good vst library which is all he needs. So welcome to 2013. Please dont go back to 1980's
It's not about the gear, it's about knowing how to use the gear you have. You can get very far with a pc/mac, an interface, a few mics and your intstrument of choice. You just need to know what you are doing.
I hear you...but the problem is that the video also leads you to believe...along with the rest of the pro audio manufacturing industry... that a laptop and a $500 interface can replace a real studio....oh and plug ins too. After all, this video was made with the sole purpose of selling you something... this case, its Vic Firth products...and a bit of Audix.
Yeah, probably because it's attic :) However, there is enough space in the attic for him and a couple of other musicians with whom he (probably) has jam sessions. On the other hand, his family certainly "enjoys" while Thomas plays above them.:)

Thomas is sick! He's playing style is off the chart. My favorite hands down. Great drum teacher
DOPE!!!
His Arnie impression is spot on
that's an original austrian skill
🤣🤣
Thomas is a first class human being. How can you not love him.
This man gathers talent, unique skills, discipline, respect and moreover charisma, elements of success!
Seems like a really cool guy. I like the "druminator" bit lol. Thanks for sharing.
Love that picture of Thomas and Danny Carey on the wall at 3:14.
This guy doesn't know HOW to be OUT of the pocket! So good!
This guy is soooooo cool :D

Thomas, thanks for your amazing job!
Respect for drummers that can play more instruments, not just drums!
Am I the only one that would like to switch lives with this dude? Haha.
This is how life should be...
LanceCampeau stole my thunder so I was inclined to + his comment below. Mr. Thomas Lang is a guy who knows how great his life is. He is THE man to hire if a musical situation arises that requires a professional. Awesome!

Cool Dude right here.
Friendships Thomas ! SUPER !

Very humble guy!
his hand gestures really give me ideas :)

Arnold.. Lmao.. Great drummer!
muito legal seu homestudio!!!
thanks for nice video
I enjoyed his drumming more than the tour
I am an amazing drummer, and it makes me happy to see, and listen to your accomplishments. I stole some things from ya,lol! and your style is a lot like mine so u put things into perspective for me. Thanks for sharing Thomas. much love bro!
Great studio! It's a shame he can only talk about his Audix mics; I see at least 4 Neumann boxes and would love to know what's in them!
Awesome!
hey Thomas do you produce music for others musician too?
just wonder if you have some complete rock song that ready to drop my own the lyric on for sale or if you know some body do some thing like what i am asking for please let me know

Amazing playing and sound - nice to hear someone can still actually play - thanks for the tips. What mic-pre-amps are you using? What desk are you referring to (are you using the pres on your desk or separate mic pre amps?)

THE BEST OF HOME STUDIO TERMINATOR T-600 GREAT!
Youre Cool Man...good sense of Humor & friendly. :)
Post-It(TM) Notes! He has post it notes all over his MAC! Quick, tell Ozzy Osbourne, Bill Ward isn't the only drummer to use post it notes!

I didn't know T. Lang is such a funny guy! :)

What’s behind the door!
2:40 LOLOLOLOLOL!! hahahah xD! :D
which mixer do you use?
What kind of interface does Thomas use?
Living tissue over the endoskeleton, he just explained it.
I just give you a like because you're wearing a Breitling SOH 46 like I do. :-)
Still sounds pretty good to me.
And guess what, he just uses one of the best drums avaliable and one the best mics avaliable. He mix them with his programs and his sounds are always awesome. So maybe you could'nt get the point.
So Thomas Lang works as Eddie from Iron Maiden?
really funny :D but, did you have a poster of Gianna Nannini ? :D
Hah... I think the toms are close to perfect. Like my own drums ;)
Nice blend of punch and bright overtones.
Da Törminäitor, ja? Thomas du bist der beste! :D
The master
is that a Razer Blade at 5:10?? :D
Thomas should have talked about the Bud light.
Its true , all drummers are born mad.
This is Great but yeh not really much 2 say on this but Awesome. But Arnold Schwarzenegger is cool your a film star Thomas Lang like him in Drumming not sure about movie wise. because i have never seen Thomas Lang in a Action Movie yet till this day?..

He does because he is Gianna's recording AND touring drummer.
The man is living the life lol
Gianna have a great power and Thomas too ;)
No sound treatment 🤔
salut je suie une nouvelle chanteuse mais je saie pas ou je peux faire connaitre ma voix je ne veux pas etre populaire mais je faie mes propres cd

Or should I ask: VicFirth, can you please ask Tom and let us know, thanks
Lol 1:05 sounds like prince Philip..haha
😌👍
Favorite guitar player petrucci, favorite drummer thomas lang ... fuck am i a musician or a bodybuilder gay fan ?
the latter duh
I'm not gay, but Thomas Lang is enough of a stud to turn me
At the begining he turns into ''ARNOLD MODE''. If you listen to Austrian Death Machine you'll now what I mean :)
+1.
what a biceps)

***** I haven't heard your number one single? What's it called? Yea that the problem
thats like saying that a KIA is the same as a BENTLEY because it has four wheels, windows, a steering wheel and an engine.
'n bissl neidisch bin ich schon :D
it should be illegal to hide your guitars behind stuff!
Show us your pro gear that produces better sounds than what you just heard.
:)
Great studio with no soundproof equipments . How he mix and master without acoustic panels
Looks like a cramped Attic space room
Yeah, probably because it's attic :) However, there is enough space in the attic for him and a couple of other musicians with whom he (probably) has jam sessions. On the other hand, his family certainly "enjoys" while Thomas plays above them.:)
This is just like me except that I play with Jurassic Park toys and play Sabian Cymbals
Holy fuck... Is he really tall, or is the ceiling too low?
LOL..on those long nights would suck to be your neighbors if you decide to play the acoustic kit..lol I know you don't do that!
whom else wants him to say `Get to the chopper'
everytime i see the name thomas lang i confuse him with ian chang and get so excited then am like wtf
Hehehe, he has Godzilla toys. Awesome.
he plays piano?!
I got your password Lang :D
LOL hes so freaking funny
drum, piano, guitar, bass.......
"I don't know what i'm doing".... If that's not knowing what you are doing, then i'm face down in the mud crawling in dirt.
teh trumminätor ;-) österreichischer charme halt ;-)
