So the one who told the truth was Spike, but he has amnesia so you shouldn't take his entire story as complete, possibly he omitted details that he forgot.

For me, sunny is not a fully pledge alicorn since her wings and horns are just made of magic, BUT she might became one if she accomplish a great task just like twilight did. Many haters hates sunny because they thought she's a fully pledge Alicorn but she's not. She's just new to magic
The truth is, the alicorn that I liked the most was Opaline, it seemed to me that behind all that personality, all narcissistic and cold, was hiding someone who needed therapy for everything he suffered in his childhood, and I'm not just saying the rejection of Celestia and Luna or the large number of centuries that she has lived, but that Opaline had a family that did not love her much and did not pay attention to her, I mean at least they would have done something to prevent her from being banished to Skyros.
If you think about it, Opaline is not far from Megamind character. Ignored by the ones she wanted to befriend with (not a big surprise if you remember how royal sisters acted when they just met Starswirl in the comics) she decided that being a villain was her only destiny. I really hope they'll bring her back for redemption arc.

What if Sunny can’t become an actual alicorn because there’s no alicorn to change her? As far as we know, normal pony’s can only be transformed by an alicorn. I don’t know if this makes any sense but that’s just what I think

Probably because they wouldn’t sell well as toys, which is actually why twilight became a princess, to sell toys! Apparently the creator originally didn’t want her to be a princess/alicorn at all.
