- When inventor Lonnie Johnson took a simple squirt gun and ramped it WAY up, he had no idea what a hit it would be. Since the early 1990s, the Super Soaker has soaked up more than $1 billion in toy sales. But Johnson hasn't stopped there. Correspondent Mo Rocca reports on how Johnson, a former engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, continues to make a big splash. Originally broadcast on May 21, 2017.

This is an example of modern black excellence. Lonnie Johnson, we salute you! 👏🏾
It’s crazy that we was never told this in history class growing up as much as we use to play with them doing 90s
🫡
Why make it about his race? Shame on you! Keep racist remarks to yourself
Incredible story! Lonnie obviously is a genius, I'm so glad his mother lived to see how proud he made her!He looks like a great guy👍
The Super Soaker 50 just might be the greatest toy ever invented. I still have mine. My friends and I had legendary battles with our toy water guns back in the day but it was the Super Soaker series that we all ran out to buy (or begged our parents for birthdays and Christmases) that made some serious, well organized water battles.
Thank you Mr. Johnson for these excellent childhood memories.
Thank you Mr. Johnson for those super awesome summers back in the mid-90s.
You didn't talk about how Lonnie Johnson had to take Hasbro to court after they tried to steal his patent.
Yes, Tom Joyner morning show listeners remember.
Maybe he’s not legally allowed to talk about it
That doesnt surprise me shame on Hasbro👎
@@DMEseter Oh, he can talk about it. He overwhelmingly won that case against Hasbro.
What's new about that 🤔 They've been doing that successfully, 400 yrs.
Oh the 90s how I miss being a kid. I had a supersoaker the first one they showed actually. Now as an engineer, I could see how bernoulli principle works with these guns.
Mr. Johnson is awesome.
I never knew he invented that. Good to know.
Those are some amazing toys. Thank you so much for coming up with those awesome toys.
I hope he is a rich man as he deserves to be.
This is actually a great lesson for struggling inventors. If you have good ideas that are hard to monetize, find a way to turn one of them into an inexpensive toy that can potentially be worth millions. If you're successful, you can then pursue more serious projects that you're passionate about without struggling.
This is the ultimate Summer toy for all those swim parties and outings, as well as beach days. 🌞💦🔫
Thank you, Mr. Lonnie Johnson for making my childhood awesome!
I remember he was also featured in Great Big Story. Nice to see him here in CBS Sunday Morning
So cool!!!
Genius.......
the super soaker was one of my favorite toys as a kid and now i know who invented this awesome toy, thank you sir
Lonnie Johnson is brilliant. #BLACKMANMAGIC❤️🙏🏿
It’s weird how the commercial only had 1 black person. Why do you think that was?

Such an inspiration
Cool and a genius too.
EXACTLY!!!
God Bless him! And growing up, I too was making model rockets fuel (out of matches' heads) in my backyard, destroying my grandmothers matches inventory.
I LOVE THE SUPER SOAKER !!! WAY TO GO !!!! YOUR AN AMAZING MAN !
The man made my childhood awesome.
AMAZING AND INSPIRING!!!
I would love to see him speak with Thomas Sowell.
This guy had a field day with the CPS 2000
The reason my child had a hood every occasion we had didn’t matter what it was best believe them super soakers was there now called water guns but in our time they was super soakers 💯💯💪🏽💪🏽✊🏾✊🏾 black excellence he should be part of black history cause this IS history
Whats with the reporters toupet?
how awesome
Good for him :-)

What? The inventor is African American? 😮❤️❤️❤️❤️
How cool is that. That must have been awesome working with NASA. I wouldn’t want to go into space but just being able to say I had something to do with a space project would be unbelievable. My grandson has a ridiculous collection of Nerf guns. One of them as big as he is. A new saucepan. Hmmm…that reminds me…my hub still owes me one!
Back in the day, during the elementary school fun run we would shoot them with super soakers as they ran by. Good times.
Hello Guys! I made a project about black history month!
Seems irresponsible to be playing with water near the electrical equipment
jealous, Landon?
@@mdbdoc Yep. Can’t stand a bright Black guy. No different than what happened in Rosewood and Tulsa.
@@mdbdoc yes, being safety minded is jealousy 🙄
@@buckeyewill2166 yes, being safety minded is racist 🙄
What have you accomplished. Nothing maybe an electrician
Yeah but have you heard of George Floyd? The most inspiring African American to ever live, he’s even got a statue.
And a racist strike again.
@@cross75man75 lmao, how is that racist?
@@gerard4441 The fact that you couldn't just celebrate this man accomplishment without using it to disparage another black man.
George Floyd should have followed the law instead of now lying 6 feet underground.
@@jsaavedr1 Exactly which law did he fail to follow?
The only black invention.
Keep telling yourself that if it makes your life feel like it's worth while.
@@cross75man75 Huh?
EVIDENTLY YOU DON'T KNOW YOUR HISTORY AT ALL!!!🧐
@@vh6307 Like what?
@@ShredCo How about you try researching yourself & give your soul a refreshers course of just why such present innovations & inventions remain timeless & relevant for generations! Try thanking Garrett Morgan for one! I refuse to be part of your ignoramus league of lunacy!
Thank you sir for making my 90s childhood better
CBS Sunday News continues to deliver the good vibes we all NEED in this chaotic world we live in today. 🙏🏽
Been like this since January of ‘79.
Love Sunday morning I've been watching it since it started !
I remember my SuperSoaker, with great fondness 💜 It was really nice to see the face of the inventor 👍
We would sit in my buddies Dad's car parked and blast people with my Super Soaker 100 . The good ole 90's LOL
One my friends, who I used to have super soaker fights with, now works for JPL.
A scientific genius, and the SOPER SOAKER:BRILLIANT
OK, just a thought, maybe it’s not a good idea to play with the super soakers in front of the electrical panels.
We are proud of you
