  • One of my hobbies is genealogy! In this video I share a dramatic reading of a letter written by Sue Bailey Thurman in 1982 to a newly discovered cousin living in Little Rock Arkansas who had been doing Bailey family research. Its clear from the letter that Sue had engaged in a phone conversation prior to writing the letter to the new found cousin.
There are a few things of note in the letter regarding my family research that help to clear up some erroneous family oral history, specifically with regard to my Bailey ancestors being related to Frederick Douglass who's real last name is Bailey. In the letter Sue notes that she recalls someone telling her that her father met Frederick Douglass once but that's it. She mentions no family connection whatsoever.
Sue Bailey Thurman was born in 1903 and transitioned to be with the ancestors in 1996. If anyone would know if our Bailey line was a descendant of Frederick Douglass's brother Perry Bailey (Downs), it would be her.
The other compelling aspect of this letter is the story of her brother almost being lynched.
It's so important to capture your family members thoughts and ideas and say thank you while they are still here. Let me know your takeaways from this video and let me know how your family history research is going!
