i earned my camp name of BLACKIE from a flint and steel / blackpowder fire lighting mishap..scorched my eyebrows off..the only safe way i found to do it was to use a fling lock action.at arms length...or to build up the firelay..then place the pwdr below the tinder and strike the flint in a horizonal fashon under the bundle..so when it flashed it would not get me..great video dave..

how would it work with modern powders from an opened cartridge? same principle just use a little less I guess??
I jumped too the first time, I tried that...lol thanks for bringing back a memory. smokeless powder from a pistol cartridge is way better more flame less flare up. when you said you used 20-25 grains I knew you were going to jump I did the same exact thing the first time. I found it better to use 2f and sprinkle it around the bundle and then use a concentrated amount near the center about 5 grains around a pinch. great vid Dave.

We start the forges at Tannehill Park here in Alabama with flint & steel...but use char cloth instead of black powder. That powder will get your attention quick, won't it? ;)

WOOOF! No shit. What can you do to slow down the powder if anything? Could you rub it into a scrap of cloth? How long before the hair grows back on the back of your hand?
The only way to slow down the burn rate of black powder is to use a larger grain size. Dave was probably using FFFG there. You could go to FFG or FG to get the slowest available burn rate, but I doubt you'd notice the difference. The only real way to slow it down would be to use smokeless powder. Depending upon the type--magnum rifle powder is the slowest--it burns for quite a while, but smokeless won't ignite with flint & steel. You'd have to use a ferro rod to ignite it.
Using black powder you may be able to pour it out in a thin line & just light one end of it. It would likely burn a little bit longer that way, but only a little bit.

Obvious consideration should be given with this method and can be used as an option with damp materials

Dave, It looks like you jumped 5 feet into the air when it went off and came down ready to add oxygen.
my grand dad taught me they would also rub black powder into rags to ignite the fire on the trail. his grand ran a chuck wagon and that was his job to orient the tongue with the northstar in the evenings and cook for the hands.

Just like a flint lock rifle spark ignites powder. A lot of people today could not light a fire with matches.

catching a spark onto some char material and then dropping it into the powder might be a bit safer, definitely looks dangerous, you could easily get a flash burn. Interesting backup plan to be aware of, but this method would be my very last choice personally.

Having used black powder quite a bit, I knew what the beginning warning was all about and knew what was going to happen, thinking to myself during your strike "you're too close, back up". Frankly, I would rather use a dozen match heads in that bundle than bp. And No, I did not laugh.

How would you smoke meat?
All I can say is beards are flammable if you are not careful my friend. A few years back I singed mine about 1/2 off. Now while I can lay the fire and strike the sparks any close up work like blowing the wife takes over and refuses to let me do. Oh and using powder like this forget about it at least if she is around ;)

That would work even better with smokeless powder. The powder would have a much longer burn time.
Actually smokeless powder is harder to ignite. If you get it going it will work but it is much easier to ignite with a coal than with a spark.

While I have played with black powder myself it is very dangerous and it is an explosive I would never advise anyone trying this. If I were you I would remove this video and I am sure Goex powder would agree. Kids watch your videos and this is not for someone that doesn't know what they are doing. I watch and have watched all of your videos and enjoy them very much you work very hard and I hope to meet you someday, I just think this video is a mistake

Kids having access to Black Powder is a bigger issue than this video brother-
That kind of thinking is the problem with the world today. The responsibility lies with the individual, way to much things are regulated by law because of this "safety" your talking about. Every man and woman has to take care of themselves and stop relying on others to keep them away from harm, and just as dave said above a kid is a parents responsibility. Could stretch this to many subjects including the problems you have over there with your 2nd amendement.

He has warnings not to try this and well if kids can get ahold of black powder then well there is a lot more dangerous information out there about things you should not do with it. BTW I am a kid that played with black powder and I still have all my fingers and such.
***** Kids get into everything, I know I did. I no longer have kids in the house but when the grand kids come home I have to go around the house putting up my knives and guns I have more gear than I can lock up so I have to hide some, most gets locked away, I have three safes. I no longer have black powder went to a savage ML10 which used smokeless powder.
