    This is a great video! Just bought a house with an air exchanger and had no idea how to maintain it. Never had a house before and was finding some of it overwhelming. Thanks for taking the edge off one of the "new" things to me!

    Steve, absolutely the best maintenance video. My exchanger lid was stuck from lack of maintenance so I wasn't sure how to remove it. Your video was so helpful as my filters were clogged and the unit was not working well at all. Vacuumed, washed and dried filters and everything is back in working order. Thanks so much.

    Great explanation for the impatient woman. Ours has paper filters except for the hard interior filter. Will never have a home without one of these again! Well worth the money!

    Thanks so much! We bought our hose just a year ago, and had no clue about ours. It is exactly like the one you have! I looked inside, and it's awful. Going to clean today. It's winter now, so can't use hose. Going to have to do it all in the house. I really appreciate your video!

    Thank-you so much for this. My husband and I are young, first time home owners and we seriously neglected our heat recovery unit having never dealt with one before. I can tell that there is lots of dust etc being blown into our home when we turned it on and with a new baby we want great air quality and we were about to hire someone to do this thinking it was much more complicated!

    Good , simple explanation. One thing I do is to wash the main filter in a large Rubbermaid container. Fits nicely and less water. From past experience washing things in bathtubs could accidentally chip / scratch your tubs finish. I weigh down the filter with a piece of wood on top and a weight on top of the wood. The foam filters I do in kitchen sink. Cleaning main filter off with a high pressure hose might damage the plastic channels. As long as clean water flows through that should be good. But this is a helpful video.

    I am SO glad I found your video! The homeowners before me didn't leave the instruction manual.:(. I am a stay-at-home mom of 4 kids. I am handier around the house than my husband. However, I never had to deal with this type of unit in our previous home. Thanks to your video, I now have the confidence of maintaining this myself! Thank you!😁

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I found that the shop vac removed absolutely nothing from my filters on which the gunk was actually caked on like icing (inlet side). I had to rinse them under the laundry tub tap for a few minutes until the water stopped being black! Then I soaked them with dish soapy water for 5 minutes, then again rinsed them off and used a rubbing motion using the palms of both hands on both sides of the filter to loosen the dirt. Again the water turned black. New soapy water bath for the filters, then soak overnight. Note the filter numbers on the stickers before cleaning because they come off in the water. The instruction manual for my Van EE 90H didn't even tell me how to open the unit! Your video showed me how. The previous home owner NEVER cleaned those filters because the proof was there on the inlet side filter where there was a of sheathing stuck to it where they went through the outside wall for venting. The shop vac did NOTHING to clean the filters, soaking and rubbing both sides at once between the palms of my hands added the right amount of friction without damaging the spongy material worked. I estimate my filters were not cleaned for 16 years. Thank you Steve.

    Just so you know Steve, the exchanger's lid is easily removed by sliding it a wee bit to the left. It pops out and is easily set back in. Then you won't have to worry about it dropping down on you :).

    Interesting how energy recovery units have evolved over the years. Most were traditional low static cross flow units that are placed in the ceiling of the home. Now there are high static units, others that fit into the kitchen cupboard and even ones that look like a typical domestic exhaust fan. A good one I came across I think was called an Aerofresh.
    It looked like two grilles, one inside the house and the other on the exterior bricks. They claimed it had a heat exchange within the tube that connect the two grilles to harness the heat.

      Be careful using this soak method, this works fine for units that filters are made of plastic, a lot of units out there are using cardboard, water and cardboard do not mix well. I would consult the manual first or check the filter tag :)

    Hi Steve. Thanks for the demo on the Air Exchanger. Just wondering your suggestion on cleaning the plastic tubing that drains moisture into the floor drain. Mine looking pretty mangy and thought I should probably clean it but not sure how.

    • @steve45ca
      @steve45ca  10 лет назад

      The tubing should be pretty cheap to replace but if you want to clean it, it should separate off the connectors. I'd soak the tubing in bleach or oxyclean and warm water,

    • @catejamison881
      @catejamison881 6 лет назад

      yes, you should clean them regularly. Those tubes on mine get dirty enough (forest fires and such) that they grow mold. Since my exchanger pees a lot, the guys hooked up a drain line. And that gets really nasty! We mounted a small bottle brush on a wire (it has to go through a u turn drain pipe) and I just ram it out about once a month and give it a spritz of vineager. Otherwise our air tight home builds mold rapidly. I can actually feel a difference after doing the maintenance Steve described so well here.

    Thx Steve, this has been very helpful. There is a hose that leads condensation? Or water away from the unit. I noticed in the last week it has been dripping do you know what may be the cause? Do you think cleaning the filters will make it stop? Guess I’ll find out when I put the filters back in and turn it back on.

    • @steve45ca
      @steve45ca  5 лет назад

      There should be a hose to drain the condensation. On mine there is where I can adjust the humidity level for the house. Check with your manufacturer, they may have an owner's manual you can reference. Cheers!

    • @steve45ca
      @steve45ca  7 лет назад

      I haven't heard anymore on that. If the hose is looking cruddy, I would buy a new one at the hardware store. The tubing is usually sold by the foot and is relatively cheap. just measure your hose before you buy a new one so you'll know how many feet to buy. cheers

      I bought 2 humidity monitors, one on my fridge and the other near my panel. I set the humidity down then slowly move up until you hear a click. I try to adjust to 50-60% max on the humidity monitors, got them at Home Hardware in Nova Scotia. I haven't really cleaned mine in 4 years. I am a new home owner and I am noticing a lot of dust build up and I think this is why. Time to clean it next weekend.

      I turn my system off during the summer. Once the temp is nice enough to have the windows open, no sense having it on to circulate fresh air and it would work overtime trying to remove the humidty with the windows open. Cheers!

    Hi Steve. This video is very informative but I need your help here. My home Venmar air air exchanger drips continuously from the right side front hinge, sometimes less sometimes more so we have to keep a pot below it. The unit is leveled and it is not even tipped towards the front door cover, the discharge tubings are also not blocked; Our house is not damp and have cooking once in a day. The house is hardly 6-7 years old. We do not feel any dampness in home. The filters are washed and cleaned. The water or moisture comes on the foam on the inside of door cover making its way down to right side hinge and then drips down to pot. This is really frustrating. The technician is coming in four days. Please help or suggest. Thanks a lot.

      +Muhammad Arshad Qureshi ;drain hose is likely sitting in the water if you have it draining in a bucket or if it is in the plumbing the hose needs to be lifted the hose if submerged in water it will syphon back into the machine!

      +Muhammad Arshad Qureshi if i was to guess, i'd say it should be tipped slightly to the back where the drain hose is located

      Thanks for the reply but you checked the comment very late. I mentioned it already is inclined and level for the flow of water towards the drain pipes. The technician came and simply put a sealant tape where it was dripping inside the cover and said it is due to the sudden changing weather temperatures and it stopped dripping. He charged big amount for that. I am posting my experience here so that people may benefit here from this experience.
