Any hints for winter to prevent freeze up. Seen many pictures of them frozen up in our cold prairie winters. Might be from not knowing how to maintain or operate as well. Are there suggested controller settings for fan speeds and timers that would help prevent his when its to be -25 and beyond

Kevin we have this exact unit. It was installed without a loop for the drain hoses. Is this something I should change, or is it not a big deal? Also is it advisable to wash out the interior of the cabinet, and if so, what would your advice be to use? Thank you. Great video.

It is not necessary for it to be looped. The loop is there to block insects crawling out of the HRV through the drains. The loop fills up with water and this blocks the insects. However this loop also gets really dirty and needs to be cleaned out annually by pouring water down the drains. The loop is usually only necessary when a home is built close to water.

    Hi, very informative video.
    I have few queries:
Do we need to turn off the hrv while doing this activity?
Also, if we wash the filters, we need to put it back when they r dry, the hrv will be off till that time?

Hi there! As soon as you open the door of the HRV the power turns off automatically. After a few minutes the fans stop turning and it will be safe to clean the inside of the unit.
The HRV is designed with drains so you can install the core and filters when they are still wet, no need to wait for them to dry.
As soon as the door to the HRV is closed it will turn back on and run through a diagnostic cycle before returning to normal operation.
Please let us know if you have any further questions.

@@ShaneHomesLtd The core has 4 sides with 2 of the green pads.
When returning the green pads, do they go on the sides that are facing the fans?

    Hello,
Where can we buy the green replacement filter? Can you please provide a SKU number or part number? Thank you 😊

I forgot a question... I wash the filter. Do they, and the core have to be dry before putting everything back together?

The HRV has two filter elements which are usually green and a heat exchanger which is aluminum. The best way to clean the filter elements is to vacuum them as they tend to shrink when washed. The heat exchanger does need to be rinsed out at least twice a year. The HRV is designed to handle some water so it is not necessary to dry the heat exchanger before putting it back in.

Do HRVs assume the outdoor air quality is better than the indoor air? What about wildfire smoke and car pollution? Does that make its way into homes since those pre-filters look like they wouldn't stop smaller particulate. A lot of cities have terrible air quality now so I do not see the the value of an HRV compared to having your furance cycle frequenly, which has a higher quality air filter.
