  • Iran has elected a new president. Masoud Pezeshkian has been described by many as a moderate candidate - who's been promising social reforms and engagement with the West. But in the Iranian system, it's the Supreme leader - not the president - who has the final say. So, will Pezeshkian's election bring any shift in policy? And how will he deal with the many economic and political challenges facing Iran?
    Presenter: Dareen Abughaida
    Guests:
    Foad Izadi - Head of the American Studies Department at the University of Tehran and a Specialist in US-Iran related issues.
    Roxane Farmanfarmaian - Lecturer in Modern Middle East Politics at the University of Cambridge and a Specialist in Middle East Security.
    Mehran Kamrava - Professor of Government at Georgetown University in Qatar.

      I saw hundreds of video footages from travelers and vloggers of Iranian cities all across the iran and yes Iran is magnificent civilisation, thousands years back traditions and culture, philosophy, food, music, poems and art. I really am stunned by Iranian nature and city and towns. Very different landscapes, buiding strustures, old towns with a lof of heart and spirit.

      You may be familiar with the American idiom "From out of left-field". I am personally prepared to consider Iran's geographic position in concert with 21st century realities. Russia is to Iran as Canada is to the United States. Iran is in proximity to India and Pakistan. Absent a bellicose rhetoric, I would consider the Iranian pursuit of a nuclear DETERENT completely reasonable.

    • @aiakbari1726
      @aiakbari1726 4 дня назад

      No. 😂😂
      The expiration date of the monarchy is over. Iranians want justice and democracy. Justice is opposed to monarchy. Monarchy is hereditary and unfair. Why should a person whose father was a king be able to become a king, but other Iranians cannot become a king? Family principle and installation are not criteria for choosing people. Iranians are extremely reformist. Iranians have a tradition of trying to find a balance between tradition and modernity. They have no middle ground with Tahjar. Determining the ruler based on family ties is a clear symbol of Tahjar. Iranians do not consider even the Islamic Republic without problems and try to correct its defects. But at least in the Islamic Republic, the rulers are not chosen based on family relationship and there are legal mechanisms to choose the president and leader. Although some of these mechanisms need to be reformed and the constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran must be reformed, but no one wants a kingdom. Because it is a symbol of petrification.
      Also ignore X (Twitter). Most Persian Twitter users are royalists who live in Europe and America. They are the survivors of the former Iranian regime. Their total number worldwide does not exceed five hundred thousand people. They left Iran fifty years ago and do not know the current Iran. Reza Pahlavi is the son of the former Shah of Iran. He is their leader. A campaign was launched to support him. Despite the many advertisements and the support of Israel and the United States of America, he could not attract more than five hundred thousand people. So far, he has not been able to influence any political and social movement in Iran. He has always only surfed. Iranian people did not participate in any of his calls. By the way, he has entered the people's movements with demagoguery. The population of Iran today is ninety million people. Most of the ordinary people of Iran do not use Twitter. Iranians usually use Instagram, Telegram and Iranian social networks

    Iranians are not homogenous and monolithic. Iranian moderates and conservatives have always negotiated on various issues including domestic and foreign policy issues. So this election result seems to be an outcome of a new negotiation signed by internal power brokers. They must have arrived at a certain conclusion that Iran needs some sort of changes in cultural, economic, and foreign policy. But there won't be a tectonic shift. That's why conservatives accepted the result. So, there will be some change. It will be tightly controlled and limited, but clearly will be a change.

      Trading is not kneeling. Western countries are generally very friendly to countries that don’t threaten them with nuke posturing and aren’t supporting terrorist organizations. Just look at what happened to Singapore when they accepted western help and trade, they became very wealthy, safe and still kept their culture. Same with Japan, South Korea and others. Iran needs to open up and trade with both the West and BRICS. That’s what will benefit them the most in the long run.

    Why all presidents of today's youth have to be from 3 generations ago? It's odd... They never will understand the wishes of the youth, they never realise the true face of the modern world. As a 29 years old Iranian i can see that 95% of Iranian people younger than me want to connect with the world, they are into global unity and they dream of becoming musicians, engineers & scientists while living in a free country, this issue is a global issue, people should start voting for younger folks, other examples are Israel & Russia, old folks ruling countries with old ideas, this has to change.

      @@gulzarmohd7709 if you lived there you get my point. nobody is happy in Iran, because they living in the past. but the issue i mentioned is a global issue, people who are getting elected dont' have any connection to the youth, what's worse is that when they create a war and it's not them who have to fight it, they will be dead in 5 years, but it's the youth that have to finish those wars by wasting their best age instead of following their dreams and their talents. it's not only Iran, look at Syria, Iraq, Israel, Palestine, Russia & Ukraine, all those soldiers or civilians who died, do you think they didn't have had talents or dreams? but it was those greedy old rulers who ruined it for them. it has become a tradition for the world, those guys too had been targeted to this system, when they were young they had to fight wars, and they just were lucky to be elected when they are old. with younger and more moderate presidents the aim of nations will be on things that matter the most for the upcoming generations, that is peace, development and education, maybe people are more exited of exploring the rest of the universe than fighting boarder wars.

      I am Iranian. I am a reformist and I voted for Masoud Pezeshkian. The main reason for the failure of the Khatami government was the bad intentions of the Europeans and the main reason for the failure of the Rouhani government was the malice of the United States of America. The Khatami government tried twice to resolve the tension with the West, but the West broke the agreement. Khatami government cooperated with America in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Quds Force helped America to fight the Taliban. Khatami had secret negotiations with the Americans. Iran promised that Lebanon's Hezbollah would gradually become a political party, but immediately George Bush came to power in the United States. placed Iran in the axis of evil. Iran negotiated with Germany, England and France about nuclear energy. Saad Abad agreement regarding nuclear energy between Iran and three European countries was concluded in Tehran. But the Europeans also did not fulfill their obligations. Therefore, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad came to power in Iran and started hostile policies against the West. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was a reaction against the immorality of the West. Rouhani's government cooperated with America to fight ISIS in Iraq and then negotiated with America and Europe and the JCPOA was signed. But Donald Trump withdrew from the JCPOA and the Europeans could not fulfill their commitments. Then Donald Trump assassinated General Qassem Soleimani. The reason for the failure of Hassan Rouhani's government was Donald Trump. When the moderates agree with the West and the West does not adhere to the agreement, the extremists naturally come to power. This is completely normal. The main reason for the weakening of the moderates in Iran has always been the West.

      Revolution is generally a radical political act. Societies become revolution when they become radicalized. Therefore, many actions during the revolutionary period are radical. The lifestyle of people in the distant past is not necessarily the same as it is today. For example, my past view is different from today. Iranian society is a plural society. There are many tastes in Iran. Iranian society is a combination of tradition and modernity. The view of Iranians is changing over time. Some Iranian politicians have not been able to grow along with the society, but Masoud Pezeshkian is a politician who has grown and changed along with the society. As the menstrual cycle progresses. In Iran, what is inappropriate today may not have been so inappropriate yesterday.
      At the same time, the culture and customs of the societies are different. The accepted values in Europe are not necessarily the same as in Iran. For example, homosexuality is accepted in the West. But Iranian society strongly condemns it. Cultural changes are also gradual. Massoud Pezeshkian is a politician who changes almost along with the society. Meanwhile, Iran's community is plural and he must create a balance between different opinions in Iran in a way that satisfies both the conservative traditionalist society and the modernist society.
