That tone! It's her strength. Once you hear that voice, from the very first note you instantly recognize that it's Anita Baker. Sounds so good. Vocal acrobatics are not her thing, but her tone is what put her at the top of the charts for a long time.
Yes! I grew up as a child watching my mother do housework on the weekends, waltzing and singing these songs as she swept and wiped. I'm now in my late 30s and I love jamming Anita's albums. People think I'm weird. lol
Artistry. She does with her voice what George Benson does with his guitar. A full knowledge of their intrument and complete mastery of what they wish to do with it. She is one of my many favorites and so many more of her songs could have been highlighted to explore. Thank you Beth 🙏
You just don't experience skilled , soul-filled performances like this very often. It is just other-worldly in its richness and perfection and Beth, just did a fabulous job at reviewing this morning, afternoon and evening musical delight!
I remember seeing her in the late 80’s - she stopped her concert and thanked me and my date for coming and that she thought we were a beautiful couple. We definitely stood out because we weren’t part of her normal crowd - back then her crowds weren’t as diverse. We just loved her velvety voice.
I was introduced to this song by my mom, it was her favorite song! I wouldn't be surprised if it's the first song I ever heard tbh. Anita was the soundtrack to every Sunday of my childhood. RIP mama. 🌻
When songs from the past play, I always picture what was going on in my life, at that time. ❤ 1986 I was a young mom, 27, with 2 little kids. Three & Five. Now 38 & 41. Where DOES the time go 😮
Beth was loving this performance. That’s what great performers do 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Anita just puts so much emotion into every note, every pause and every movement. Every song she sings. Perfection. Very jazz like for a pop song, very Sarah Vaughan, too.
I was first introduced to Anita Baker in 1987, I have to say I had never heard of her at that point. It was the "Rapture" album and I remember I was immediately in love with her voice and singing. Now while she performs pretty well here, you should definitely listen the album version for your own pleasure. The whole album is more or less in the same mood and it makes for a quality listen.
Anita Baker have a wondeful voice. I get goosebupms when I hear her sing. WOW. Thank you Beth for your interesting and lovely reaction videos. You have a wonderful smile thats always makes me smile 😃😃🌹🌹
It was so much fun to watch you enjoy the nuances, the control the effortless style of The Songstress...you could not have picked a better track to spotlight. EVERY live song from The Rapture project later produced as "One Night of Rapture"-it's how i sing the entire Rapture album. MY FAVORITE!! ❤❤❤ MUCH LOVE & RESPECT for Anita Baker❤❤❤
Anita Baker is awesome. How about Al Jarreau (RIP)? Have you done any of his? One of the most talented and special singers I've ever heard. One of the best at scat singing.
One of my Favorite singers/songs Ever! If a woman sent me this song, I would be her Fool Forever! There is a warmth, tone, and sultriness that is almost specific to black artists that cannot be imitated!
I'm glad to hear you mention what I label as "decorative divas" and "note shredders". They can pop you out of the enjoyment of a song so easily. I think that singers need to recognize and let the power of the melody do its work. Even such a great soul singer as Jackie Wilson didn't realize that a classic tune like "Danny Boy" didn't need any embellishment because the melody is so strong.
that voice is smoooooooooooth as ****. Like sonic honey. I bought the album when it came out in the 1980s and have always adored this track. The album cut is just glorious.
If Anita's "Sweet Love" song, her voice, lyrics and music, doesn't make you want to wrap your arms around your baby and dance, we should call the coroner.
Lived outside of Detroit in the late ninety’s. It was rumored that Anita Baker, having left full time music production to raise her daughter, would occasionally do a local concert a few times a year. I regret that I never sought out one of her performances.
Beth, if you ever went to see her in concert, I have no doubt Ms. Baker would pull you on stage. 😁 You are SO into the music. I was reminded of some of the things you said about Ann Wilson's voice in the tribute version of "Stairway to Heaven." (And yes, I tear up every time I hear that. Nothing wrong with me, I reckon.) Similar in that they're both altos with effortless transition into their head voices, etc. Yes? No?

hi. Really love your analysis of vocals. I'm a decent singer, and your insight into controlling and 'knowing' your voice and its capabilities is super helpful! Don't be what you're not. Thanks!
Hi, thank you for your lovely comment! I’m happy that you love my analysis of vocals and that you find it helpful. I think it’s important to know your voice and its strengths and limitations, and to be authentic and confident in your singing. I’m sure you’re a great singer and I wish you all the best in your musical journey. Thanks for watching and supporting me!
I heard that Sweet Love is one of difficult song to sing because Anita Baker was a great singer and she had made it her own. Then she sang this song live, in such an effortless manner and a different energy than the studio version that made this live version very unique take. And, I think, even more difficult to emulate than the studio version.
Vocal riffs and runs, or as my mum used to call it, "vocal acrobatics". It can be quite insincere and annoying at times, unless it comes from a singer who knows how to use it tastefully and sparingly.
I sure wish we had more altos...that range is so soothing. I completely agree about riffs/runs. For a little embellishment here and there is on thing, but when it's constant it's just distracting.

Anita is truly special and the fact that she is currently touring and still singing these songs in the same key is amazing!
Love the way she moves on stage. What a presence.
I remember seeing her in the late 80’s - she stopped her concert and thanked me and my date for coming and that she thought we were a beautiful couple. We definitely stood out because we weren’t part of her normal crowd - back then her crowds weren’t as diverse. We just loved her velvety voice.
Good music is good music, and this is good music.
watched her live in Rochester, NY in 1988 or 1989.
I could listen to her sing this song all day
Yes, I'm old and remember how much I loved this song when it came out.
Anita Baker has that smoothie jazz voice, She's absolutely one of my all favorite time female singers.
I was introduced to this song by my mom, it was her favorite song! I wouldn't be surprised if it's the first song I ever heard tbh. Anita was the soundtrack to every Sunday of my childhood. RIP mama. 🌻
She had you growling, too! 😂❤
Anita Baker's such a pleasure to enjoy. Thank you for featuring her heavy tones. What a talented singer!

Anita is amazing with a very unique voice. Smooth R&B Queen.

I am old, but seem to remember Anita was told early on she couldn't sing.
I think they did not get her amazing style and gift!❤

I've seen her twice. First time in 1987. The last time was 2018 at the Greek Theatre in LA. She is fabulous live.
Anita is in absolute Service to the song. She only unleashes her thoroughbred Voice when it's call for..
And the Result we call...
"Rapture" ✨️
Anita Baker is awesome. How about Al Jarreau (RIP)? Have you done any of his? One of the most talented and special singers I've ever heard. One of the best at scat singing.
I remember this song from the 80s. She has such a huge, effortless range 🤩 Classy stuff.
my favorite singer right there and I had the biggest crush on here still do to this day
Thank you for your analysis on one of my favorite artists, Anita Baker. I would love to see one on her “Giving You The Best That I Got”, song.
Excellent analysis of Anita Baker's sweet love.
One of my Favorite singers/songs Ever! If a woman sent me this song, I would be her Fool Forever! There is a warmth, tone, and sultriness that is almost specific to black artists that cannot be imitated!
She is unique!
I thoroughly enjoyed this reaction.
Yes she has a beautiful voice. This was also the decade of Minnie Riperton...one of the greatest voices of all time.

really enjoyed this one! Anita Baker has such an insanely unique voice

You help so much for my speech. I recently had a stroke survivor.!! God bless you!!

Anita Baker=Pure Class.
Anita is brilliant! She sounds like warm honey to me
This was the 1st album I bought on cassette because of this song. A classic!!!
Anita Baker the greatest
Probably the greatest ❤
I have her greatest hits in my Jeep. Her and Sade. She was told she couldn’t sing.
Excellent artist and talent Anita Baker
oh, and btw, your advice to roll with the song, percussion or otherwise, spot on! One can be an entertainer more than a musician.
Hi Beth! Wow just wow that was Amazing! I like Anita she is so talented! I love this video! My favorite song from her!
Love it! ❤

SUPER!!!
Of course I also must mention, I still love the debut Whitney Houston release.
Black velvet.
She is wonderful (she’s a mezzo soprano btw, not an alto, just has a great lower register)
Love your insight. Please do a take on Basia, Time and Tide. Underated 80s hit with an incredible voice.
いつもより熱く語っています🤗

Anita Baker’s classiness is why I always feel like she’s English. The fact that she’s not so over the top only adds to that.
Watch the video Anita pops in on Rachelle Farrell as she is having her concert. An8ta can hit long and soprano notes.
Ok, I just realized that she seems to do something with her voice that reminds me of what Michael McDonald does. Has anyone else noticed this?
Maravilhosa
She says there will be new music this year
My ex-GF's favorite singer and I quickly learned why. I do think it's now time for a Michael McDonald reaction who imo may be the male equivalent.
I so favor alto voices, the fullness.
Please do James Shawn through the valley, I'm trying to get this song down since forever and a day and some pointers would be great, also doing a cover doesn't do his talent justice.
