You guys are all very lucky...here in the Phillippines, almost no upholstery tools/equipment are available here...that's why filipino upholsterer are using DIY tools to finish their project...
Hello, could you advice on where to get the piston for leather buttons? I have bough one size 36 but it will do only fabric. Leather buckles up the bottom part of the button and it just does't work properly. Best regards Jacob

Good tips! Fortunately I have never had misaligned issues due to improper manufacturing.... (I worked for a shop that had the tool there). Unfortunately...I don't have a button maker of my own and would benefit from having one...for folks that would like buttons. Thanks for sharing these tips.
Which button maker tool do you recommend? (And not recommend?)
I cannot recommend a special one, sorry.
Most of these presses are similar: machinable cast iron for the body, mild iron for central piston and other parts, and a steeled spring around the big central pin. Dies are also mild iron.
I am aware of my press, as time passes, its cast iron cylinder wall would wear off and I would solve the issue by adding a 'graphite bronze bushing' I could change anytime it starts wearing away. In the meantime I can wrap in leather hundreds of buttons.
