    to answer your question at 10:00 Paul, freight train operators work in pairs; a Driver and a Conductor. (at least in North America) the Conductor stands at the end of the siding and radios the driver how far he has to go, when to stop etc. The Conductor is also responsible for the changing of the points, coupling and uncoupling of the cars, and so on and so forth.

    • @skylarkeighley2369
      @skylarkeighley2369 Год назад

      basically the conductor is responsible for the train and the engineer is responsible for getting it there on time

  • @ronowen4874
    @ronowen4874 9 лет назад +10

    In the States at least, the train stops at the siding and drops off the conductor, who then radios the engineer when the last car is past. He then serves as the engineer's eyes as the train is backed into the siding.

  • @eg3101
    @eg3101 9 лет назад +4

    Two posible ways the driver would know he/she has reached the end of the track:
    1: The driver would have another person helping him/her do the (un)coupling (in danish: Rangist). This person would carry a radio. Via the radio the person would tell the driver the number of wagon lenghts left, before the train reaches the end of the track.
    2: The engine could be fitted with a remote control. This way the driver can operate the engine (that is preset to not go over a sertain speed).
    At least thats some of the possibilities in Denmark, that I know of.

    The reverse back into Rugby No3 siding is done using the Shunter's radio and verbally conducts the driver back into the siding. It is 4mph in any siding.

  • @martynhorton2689
    @martynhorton2689 7 лет назад +1

    Squirrel..DIRFT..direct international rail ferry terminal.
    And the 50mph sign had a little arrow under it pointing to another track..meaning it would be 50mph if you changed track.
    And reversing wagons into a siding is all done by the magic of a friend walking at the rear with a walkie talkie.)

  • @TimeMeddler
    @TimeMeddler 9 лет назад +1

    The 50mph limit was for the turn off onto the other track as indicated by the right-pointing arrow above the sign.

    paul a lot of drivers in the class 66 use the "train length button" which when pressed will beep gain when the back of the train passed the point when you pressed it the first time, this is simulated in TS15 by pressing the y key

  • @sebastianjansson
    @sebastianjansson 9 лет назад +6

    In sweden, before you can go with your train you need a paper that, among with other things, says how long you are (it's called information to driver). When you reverse like that you would always need at least another guy at the end of the train, called signal transmitter. He says how much it's left and what the signals show.

    I love the viedo, another method of reversing is that your last wagon is equipped with a FRED F-lashing. R-ear. E-nd. D-etection.
    These can be equipped with a radio transmitter that would relay information to the driver, or someone would hand on the bag and call out car lengths. You should do a video in 2016 with the GWR Castle, it's a bigger version of the Hall you drove before with a speed (in service) generally between 60 and 100mph. Great Class 66 videos though.

    Hi Paul, HoundDogUk here, DIRFT is Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal. near Junction 18 of the M1, Tescos has a massive distribution centre here as well as Eddie Stobart

    Nice video. I don't know a lot about procedures, but from what I have seen they have boots on the ground helping these trains in yards etc.

  • @jock678
    @jock678 9 лет назад

    DIRFT stands for Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal. It on the M1 at junction 18.
    If a train has to propel into a siding there will be a shunter in the yard who will tell the driver where to stop. If there is no shunter then the driver will have a Guard with him. UK train drivers don't have to uncouple their train.
    The signal you weren't sure about is called a subsidiary signal; basically it gives you permission to proceed at caution. You get them entering yards or platforms; it means proceed but there may be another train ahead of you so go slowly.

    • @jock678

    The conductor of the train that is with the engineer (driver of the train). The conductor usually the one that help with that. Some time in videos you see the a guy at the tail of the train while its backing up. He is more like the eyes and ears if anything happen while the training is backing up down the line.

    Paul, I'm from America and I know that the signal with the two dots was an advance approach signal. Also the 50 sign you saw on the mainline was for the turnout at that sign (the speed limit for any turning out train). I'm sorry, but you probably would fail your engineer test my friend. See you on Thursday's stream, Farming for the win!!!!

    In Belgium we have smal white signs next to the tracks and a number indicating how far away you are from the last switch and so. So for instance when you pass a 3 you are 300 meters away so 300- lenght of train, is the amount of room you are past

    Squirrel to answer your question on how the train driver knows when to stop at the end of a sitting is simply that most of the time the conductor or Car man will be at the back,of the train giving hand signals or radio signals telling when to stop. But I live in America so im nit sure how it is in the UK.

  • @donaldwelch9949
    @donaldwelch9949 9 лет назад

    There are distance counters inside the locomotive, and on that particular move the conductor would have gotten off at the switch and count the driver down to a stop.
