I understand your thinking, Travis. But, I had to laugh at what, Ryan said because I was thinking the EXACT same thing! Sometimes writing the check is the best course of action. Then again it's your money and your decision. Good luck!
Sorry to see gear box in pieces on the work bench, good thing there's no hay on the ground to bail up so you can get bailer back to good as new, thanks for the update Travis
I should go for a new gearbox, this time next year when grain prices and hay prices have recovered in price you will wish you had bought a new one. Enjoyed the video thanks travis
A sure sigh of a good Mechanic 👨🔧 . Don’t read the instructions, look 👀 at the pretty pictures!! Happy 😃 you did not burn the baler up. Thanks, good video.
At first I was thinking failure from changing the box around to 1000 shifting the load to The other side of the gears and bearings. But now I agree with your theory after seeing it. The part with Ryan Talking about the camera settings was funny lol
It will come as no surprise that I remember you guys switching that gearbox around to allow 1000 rpm input. The fact that it has lasted as long as it has without major issues is a big surprise. Getting down into the guts of the project seems to be your knack (or one of many). Isn't it great when your younger brother can give you a helpful tip every now and then? Thanks for the video.
:( well although you might want a new used baler, i'd want to keep the one you with have with rebuilt parts, you just did the roller. Cool new chain. P/m and lithium grease just like i use for my bike chain. almost no dirt. cool video. Show us what you get. Good to have your brother as the camera man! Used his bag to shop at the farmers market today!
The comments are really unique next time I have a breakdown can I link the video to your channel? Looks like I can pretty well get a diagnosis and instructions from all of your subscribers and viewers... on how to fix about anything! Great videos always thanks
Sounds like you did the right thing at the time you saw smoke.i have found the same thing myself.glad it sounds like it will be I hope under a grand but knowing dealers. Bet it will be around 1200 for the parts. Hope my guess is totally wrong too
@Acer AcresCheers for the the reply, we'll see what "slones" say was the problem, we call a "snap ring " this side of the pond a "cir-clip". Time will tell...
@Acer Acres I think the more interesting question here is why did a snap ring made of spring steel shatter like that? Probably made brittle by all of the heat ups and cool downs on the baler over the years.
Was curious if you guys ever get your bearings or seals from the auto parts store or off the internet vs. buying from the dealer? The numbers stamped on them are universal and can save you a lot of money.
Now now boys lol. I've seen that type of failure before. The lateral thrust on the shafts puts pressure on the snap ring, it wears them breaks then starts sending metal through everything else. Could have been worse, luckily it wasnt
Nice Vid Travis! Also nice to see Ryan helping out and teaching his big brother a thing or two about how to shoot video! lol Honestly, it's always great to see you both on camera together and doing stuff, be it on your channel or his... maybe there is a 3rd channel option with the two of you... ;)
Crazy they used a snap ring on that. Doesnt sound like much, but when its running under load, that is a lot of lateral load pushing on that little surface. Why wouldnt it fail? Thats like just waiting.
Just curious. You mentioned that you was only partially done with the baling when you noticed the smoke. What did you do about getting the rest of it baled?
You said in the last video that your shop videos are boring, that is SO wrong! it is really interesting to see how the things work that you have to fix, please ignore these dumb people that say that these videos are boring...;)
I would just replace the gear box. It’s sounds expensive until you have hay sitting on the ground getting wet because you broke down again. Also the gear box ring grove looked damaged in the video but angle sucked. Do you have a local machine shop they can fix it for 1200 I’m guessing.
Hey Travis did you have the extended warranty on it?😂 All jokes aside it is extremely aggravating when something like that happens, it could have been worse the baler could have caught on fire. Good luck stay safe 👍
Aren't you glad that cap was plastic? If it was metal you would of pressured up the gearbox and cracked the gear box instead, but you melted a cap that is only 40 bucks. Cast housings won't take any pressure so they probably chose a cap that was low yield to protect the box overall. I see a lot of armchair farmers here telling Travis to spend an additional 700 dollars on a new gear box. If the gearbox is in good shape and no cracks, seal surfaces are in good shape, and bearing race locations are in good shape why on earth would he spend an additional 700 dollars on the repair? One more thing when you talk about gloves the black raven nitrile gloves from Amazon are pretty amazing.

nice looking cattle

thx for sharing Travis, you don't have very much luck this year with the implements... Have a nice day, greetings from Belgium

Gotta love the "brother love" Mr Camera man ...... you are awesome sir thanks awesome video

real detective work too!!
I would definitely go with just new parts, a little green paint and it would look brand new again

that's so badass that your rebuilding that yourself that's why I give you guys love lol

We lost a rotor gear box on the combine, it ended up being cheaper to buy a reman than buying shafts, gears and bearings for ours
Sounds like you did the right thing at the time you saw smoke.i have found the same thing myself.glad it sounds like it will be I hope under a grand but knowing dealers. Bet it will be around 1200 for the parts. Hope my guess is totally wrong too
A broken baler is never good, but you will get it done before the next baling job😉👍
Check you drive shaft and make sure it slides freely sounds like there was some end load on it to break the snap ring.
Looks to me that the thrust bearing failed and then damaged the gears...
Be interesting what 'slones' verdict is..
Nice video as always. 👍👍

I was always curious of what the inside of a gear box looks like......interesting 🧐
Get an improved aftermarket one or a newer or updated version or revision. Maybe one off a newer model will fit?

Seems to me like cost of total replacement minus price of Housing and both shafts and reassembly LABOR fee. sdh in CT

get the whole gearbox you'll be happier after buying all the parts and bearings you will be close to that any ways
$700 off of a new box. Doesn't matter in the end though when the gearbox is ultimately trashed anyway
@@TheRestOfTheStory every time we short something it usually costs more a short time later
What's bale count on the 566?
Just hope you can get by without spending a whole hell of a lot. Just remember its its something you don't want to be fixing again this season.
Yep, don't know what else is tweaked... does Deere give any credit for the broken gearbox core towards buying a new one?
Would you consider buying a khun baler I have one and it works great!
We might have to try that out
Expensive, but could have been a lot worse if a fire started.👍👍
Just curious. You mentioned that you was only partially done with the baling when you noticed the smoke. What did you do about getting the rest of it baled?
Borrowed My Buddy's Baler
You said in the last video that your shop videos are boring, that is SO wrong! it is really interesting to see how the things work that you have to fix, please ignore these dumb people that say that these videos are boring...;)
Have you changed the oil in that gear box recently? It is supposed to be changed yearly.
Its been less than a year
Did the Kuhn baler keep you going while this was down
Tapered roller bearings equal critical preload ...😉
Looks like a weak box for what it's expected to do. There should be bolted on plates to hold the bearings, not snap rings.

Time for a Reman or New👍
make a pt 2 on this please!!!!!
I'm sorry. Think I am confused. Is the Case Toast or GOOD to go???
Didn't realize it while making the video. Its trash
Thank you for the reply, sir.

No chance finding a used one?
Oh yes got to have the pictures oh yes lol
If I were you, I would buy a new gear box and then rebuild that one for a spare.
do you guys stil have the small square baler if all else fails you have that for an emergency
That went on the estate sale
Great video but where did you get that camera man 😂😂😂😂😂
Salvage yard, grab whole gear box.
Good stuff Travis, but not so fantastico:(
you will buy a new set of tires for what a dealership will charge you
Hi
Too bad you didn’t know someone who went to JD tech school !!!
Don't keep the pictures to long. The wife is going to tell you that the picture and real life don't look the same. lol

If you put water in hot oil it will boil over is what happened to you
