Don't Buy The Wrong Universal My K-Cup: Keurig Has Two Different Designs

- The old design of Keurig's Universal My K-Cup - the reusable k-cup that Keurig makes - is able to fit into all old Keurig machines, any machine really that uses the single water injection needle. In 2020 Keurig released the K-Supreme and the K-Supreme Plus, both of which use a new five-point water injection needle and as such won't work with the original Universal My K-Cup.
To fix the problem Keurig redesigned the My K-Cup to give it five holes on top to accommodate the new five-point coffee makers however the extra four holes are covered in a weirdly shaped gasket to allow for backwards compatibility to the older single needle brewers.
In my testing the new design doesn't work very well with the single brewers and in this video I show you why.

Thank you so much. We just opened my wife’s Xmas Keurig because it arrived with a broken seal and greasy fingerprints all over it and we were gonna return it to Costco. But we decided to try it and got the leaky grounds problem you have demonstrated. I’m still not sure we will keep it, but you have saved us a lot of time in solving these Keurig mysteries. I bought the original My K-Cup when I bought my Keurig 2.0 about 4 years ago. When I moved on to the K-Duo Plus, I was happy to discover I could still use the My K-Cup. This video was very helpful in that it showed me that I should not upgrade to the 5-point My K-Cup - and I will not make that switch. Thanks!
You are the best! My mom bought a Keurig bundle from QVC. It it the K-Elite machine. From what I can see it is a single needle but they included the new design my k-cup. Now I know I need to try and acquire the older design for use in her machine. Thanks again!
I was just in contact with Keurig and they told me that I did not need to use the red silicone plug with the supreme plus! So we don't have to speculate anymore on whether we need it while using the supreme plus. Thank you for your informative videos.

Thank you for the helpful info! I just bought one of these and it actually seems to work fine in my K10. I'm going to try it with a coarser grind cause it seemed to have a bit of trouble getting the water through on first brew (I reused the coffee and it went through great the 2nd time).

This is my 2nd Keurig coffee maker of this model. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf The first worked fine for more than 2 years, and I could still get a decent cup of coffee out of it if I fiddled with it when I decided to replace it. The problem I had with my first unit was this: When attempting to brew a cup of coffee, the unit would either keep brewing until the coffee was undrinkable or it would not run long enough and the coffee produced was way too strong. I cleaned the unit as best I could but it did not help. So in the end it was just too much trouble to get a good cup of coffee out of it, so I decided to replace it with a new one, which has been working great since I unpacked it.
Have Keurig Supreme Very useful video Sent my "Universal" old design back and ordered new design. Also, you are correct red rubber piece not needed and if it overflows it is a mess and hard to clean.

I have an older one that is I think the Keurig K-Classic Coffee Maker with single needle. I use the My K-Cup with the rubber gasket to convert it to five needle Keurigs. I have not had any problems with it. No leaking of water like yours did after you took the gasket out and put it back in. I also fill it to the top above the max fill line and have not had any grounds in the coffee.
I like the new K Cup filter, works good for me.

You don't need Keurig-brand reusable K-Cups. I use generic reusable K-Cups in my old (K10) and new (K-Compact) Keurigs, and they work just fine.
I had not tried the My K cup because it was not fitting with a click, and now I know it simply rests in the hole. Both styles have bottom collars that snap off, and I don't know what it is for. I don't see it in your video, so I assume it is unnecessary. I have a single needle and was looking into the five-hole. Now I understand both. Thank you for posting the information.

Thanks for the video. I was ready to actually throw the coffee maker out my door. I was so disappointed in the quality of coffee and the problems I was having with the reuseable filter. Makes sense I had the wrong filter. I will try the different filter. If not I will think of a special way to discard the whole thing. The maker I purchased was the K-Slim. I give it 1 star. That's just being nice. I really hope changing the coffee filter solves the problem. Too bad the pods are so expensive. I thought the reason for the single cup was to prevent waste and save money. I should of known better.
Great information. But my wife and I are going to be using a French press for most of our coffee. The old ways are the best ways.

One RUclips channel was saying you have to remove the red rubber gasket which you show the needles in the 5 needle one push the gasket out of the way on it's own without removing the red gasket.
thanks for your very informative videos. one suggestion for the universal k-cup video. it is really not worth all the effort to modify the new design instead of just buying a $5 adapter for each type (only two types so far) and using the correct one. most people dont have so much time to modify the new (multistream) adapter and just use the cheap kcup adapters!

I just got a K Express Essentials one from Walmart and tried using regular reusable pods with the normal mechanism and the stupid thing doesn’t close down on top of it even though it fits like it should.
I have the K Duo plus coffee maker. I bought the new design reusable coffee filter holder and can’t get it to fit for some reason.
The newer design does not work well in my Duo. The top doesn’t always go down far enough to actuate the pump. The blue light flashes instead of going solid, unless i physically hold the handle down.
yours is a defect or you are puttting it on backwards. It only goes on one way, and they fit perfectly. I keurig, but we have one and this cup sucks. Somtimes the lid will not close enough to activate the machine and I have hold my lid down while brewing.
I just got a Keurig K-cup mini and some of the old-style re-usable k-cups. The machine closes nicely without the cup in place, but does not want to close with the universal cup in place. It's as if the rim of the re-usable k-cup is too thick. Has anyone seen this before?
I'm experiencing this as well. No reusable cup seems to work with the new minis, not Keurig brand, not after market, nothing. When I close it, it looks like the needle doesn't hit the middle of the area where the cup is sitting. It's a little forward, so it hits plastic and doesn't want to close. It only works with the classic disposable cups with foil so the needle can punch them anywhere.
@@francianeulaf3938 it sounds like your problem might be a little different than mine. In my case, the needle falls into the cavity in the middle of the cup-lid. But the rim of the cup is a bit too thick, so if feels like the lever mechanism is going to break when I close it. For me the answer was simple... I push the lid closed fairly tightly with one hand, and then bring the lever down with the other hand to latch it. I don't love that solution, but it's been working fine.

I just bought the keurig supreme at Kohl’s . $109 minus 25% with the coupon for taking an Amazon return in. Black only. I have a sboly which I like but I wanted a water reservoir. I thought it was a good deal and I could do a local return, if necessary.
Update: I have been using the 5 hole do-it-yourself adapter for awhile. Comments: don’t overfill. The descaling light is activated by the rate of water pouring. If the filter is clogged, the rate will decrease and the descaling light will go on. If you regularly use the adapter, every now ant then run a couple of cups through within coffee to clean it out.
For descaling, I use citric acid purchased on Amazon. Two tablespoons per quart. The descaling directions are on the keurig web site. I recommend following them exactly or the darn light won’t go off. I tried shortcuts that didn’t work. Their way did. I estimate around 15-20 minutes their way. The machine isn’t cheap so you may as well keep it working.
Can you use a paper filter with My K-Cup? Have you tested that?

I would like to add some additional comments. If you buy the older Keurig universal reusable filter from Keurig and not the knock off reusable filer (Orange or Red in colour ) for the K 2.0 you will not get the proper display for your machine (will not have option for carafe or have cup size larger then 10 cups ) I have learned this from personal experience. I have a Keurig 2.0 Model 550 and I never knew what the proper display was supposed to look like until a knock off reusable filter was included in a package of tall filters for the reusable filter . Now I am really brewing coffee that is good without the hassle of having to brew two six ounce cups .
Im looking for a new Keurig to buy myself this year but unsure which one to get considering there's so many models out there to choose from. I like the single cup with the bigger water reservoir. The search is still on!!
@Janelle, I recommend you look at the Keurig K-Slim brewer. This is one of Keurig’s newer brewers and comes with a 46oz Cold Water Tank (CWT), brews fast and has a very small foot print. I'd look into the K-Select if I were you; it's got all the features I like, it's got the bigger reservoir, it's not too expensive either, and Amazon is selling it for a super low price right now too.
Although the K-Duo Plus is not the newest, it's my favorite. I got it 3 months ago. I like the ability to do either a carafe or a single cup. It's fairly easy to maintain and the 63-oz reservoir lasts me a few days.

Should you remove the red seal when using the 5 needle unit. You indicated that the needles push it out of the way
If you have to buy the new design K-Cup, is it possible that you could use the top lid off off the old design that you are replacing? In other words, will it fit? If it does fit, then you'd think Keurig would include both tops with the product allowing the customer to choose the perfect fitting top.
I have a single needle keurig and just bought the reusable kcup yesterday. Had problems with leaking and I thought it was user error. I just saw your video and I tried again after making sure the red gasket was on tight in all 4 holes but it still leaked. Not sure if I can return it to target after using it to make coffee. Really disappointed that it doesn’t work.

i'm sorry everyone's having such issues with the gasket, the gasket on mine seems to stay sealed just fine, never any issues with it popping off. i was scared that with the red gasket off, with my 5 point machine, that water would just backflow out of it and overflow. but if you disagree, i will test it without the gasket and maybe it will make my coffee stronger, which would be a bonus.

So, if you've got the single needle injection... get the old black one - if you got the newer 5 hole models; get the gray one, and remove the red gasket.

From the instructions that came with Kcup, it says to insert it attached to the filter setup, but it doesn’t fit into the supreme!

Just got both kinds of reusable cups. Tried to use them. Nothing works. The machine is old It starts, makes noise, but nothing comes out.
I’m through with Keurig coffee makers. They are troublesome. They don’t clean or descale properly despite following directions. I have had to replace the Keurig with 3 different models and they always stop up and descale won’t work.
The universal K-Cups are not compatible with the 20 Ounce Kuerig, they'll snap the top lid right off the brewer.

I have the K-Supreme unit with the new universal K-Cup and it dribbles every time - even with the red gasket off. It is so sloppy. 😠
I have a different issue with the newer design. I make several cups a day. After several months of use the locking lid began to become loose during brewing. As a result I had to fish the cup pieces out separately. I called Keurig and they shipped a new one, and that worked well for 4 or 5 mos but is doing the same thing. No matter how secure the lid is going into the machine it’s completely separated from the cup after brewing. Anyone else have this issue? Also: Bro…stop calling it “grind”. The noun you want is “coffee”. “Grounds” are the used coffee remnants. “Grind” is what you do to the coffee.

I recently bought a supreme to replace the classic brewer we had. Can I use the refillable one hole cup in the supreme? I’m so confused lol
i tried it and it didn’t fit. it just plain old didn’t fit, was too tall if i remember correctly. especially then the pins on top for the extra four holes, were part of that reason, and are in the way. ik it sucks lol
When you use the new my kcup on the Supreme, are the 4 gasket points pushed by the 4 needles and they stay off (pushed down) ? Or do they snap back into place?
When you use it the extra four needles press the red gaskets out of the way and then they mostly snap back into place but not all the way. You'll still have to rinse the cap and gaskets off to remove old coffee oils and/or residue and then press them firmly back into place... it's not a big deal though if you only use it on the supreme or some other yet to be released five-point machine. As others have said in the comments many Supreme users just remove the red gasket completely.

@Ziad, When using the new My K-cup Universal Filter with the K-Supreme or K- Supreme Plus please remove the “red plugs”. The red plugs are only to be used when using the My K-cup on a brewer with one needle. If you leave the red plugs in place on the K-Supreme or K-Supreme Plus you run the risk of damaging/breaking the 4 needles. Also, do not fill past the max line of the filter and Keurig recommends using a coarse grind coffee. And please do not use your thumb to pack the coffee into the filter, the grounds need to be loose so the water flows through the grounds. I hope you enjoy your Keurig K-Supreme brewer.
