When I was in Italy one of the artists working on restoring the fresco at Santa Croce in Florence said that these medieval paintings were Bible translations for people who didn’t read. On hearing this I have a new respect for early and medieval Christian art. Edit: It makes sense, apart from the beauty the art adds to the Bible, to include some of these images.

I often heard that when trying to convert the Native Americans to Christianity, the Europeans used statues to tell them due to the language barrier. I don’t know how true that is though. I do know that stained glass windows in churches are sometimes referred to as a poor man’s Bible.

I got mine last month, and it's as beautiful as the others. I wish it had a leather liner and sometimes the paper's a tad too glossy in the light, but I'm still pleased. It'll be a beautiful series when it's all out, though sometimes I wonder whether the hardcover option would've been better in the end for me, giving me a row of aligned hardcover spines rather than likely two stacks as the final outcome. But these are just minor quibbles.

Tim - These look amazing, but I have one huge question: are the Roman Catholic theology and perspective so pervasive that they will be an obstacle to a reformed protestant enjoying the Word on Fire Bible? I don't need it to be completely ecumenical, just not in my face Catholic - which some of Bishop Barron's videos, wonderful though they be, certainly are, and which I fear these volumes may be as well. Thanks!

does it ever dawn on Catholics that the "Holy See"... does Not always "see"... things... the way the Bible really states...
case in point.. we are told flat out that the bible. ."these words

Show me anywhere in the bible where it says that Mary remained a perpetual Virgin After the birth of Jesus..
also .. who do Catholics believe Genesis 3:15 is pointing to?... Mary?... WRONG...

@Tomas Garza Yes I admit I DO get worked up when people who have NO idea about what the bible REALLY says...have the Gall to state
      "MY INTERPRETATION"
of what the bible says... I really do not need to interpret the Bible for Catholics... and Neither does the Pope.. or any Bishop.... they just need to READ it for themselves.. and quit trying to insinuate.. that I have my own interpretation of it ..they would come to the same conclusions..
too many people like to SHOOT FIRST and ask questions... or NOT later..

I have to constantly be on the prowl to find bibles and other resource materials at prices they are worth. There is so much of a glut of religious material that is extremely OVERPRICED .. it is ridiculous and frustrating that children of God have to be taken advantage of by institutions and Christian? Publishers wanting more than their product is worth. VERY SAD. But the very fact that I was able to purchase a brand new copy of Word On Fire volume III for 20-30 dollars less than what most places feel they deserve for this book. Is proof positive of price gouging being done to Christians by other Christians.

I understand that many Protestants take issue with certain doctrines of the Catholic Church (which I sense is the subtext behind the questions you are asking), but I have found the vast majority of Catholic people that I have met to be faithful followers of Jesus.
