  • I picked up the Shinai a few months back and with so little experiance + my prior knowledge with the iaito - surprisingly there is more to kendo that alot of us don't give enough credit for...

Really nice cuts in the beginning, your bottle cutting has definitely become more smooth. Also it was very interesting to see kendo style cutting!

Thank you! Cheers! Atleast it's only the most basic big cuts kendo does. In the advance version the cuts are even more compact and quick, which gave them that reputation of "tapping"
Something tells me it's meant for shinai and scoring purposes during their sparring

I think all 3 (Iaido, Battodo and Kendo) have specific aspects that each one by itself is lacking and require supplemental work.

I think so too, even kenjutsu lacks what others dont

This is great that you are testing the practicality and expanding on your skills. Clearly the kendo strikes are not optimal, causing the target to explode rather than cleanly cut, but still you showed it can be done and bottles are suitable for practicing the striking techniques.
I hope you build a proper cutting stand, it makes a world of difference and is valuable for this training. Bravo!

As a side note, you may very well enjoy Taisaburo Nakamura's book, the Spirit of the Sword, which goes into this topic at depth. His greatest wish was for the unification of Iaido, Kendo, and Battodo, through the learning process of tameshigiri.

Yea still haven't got around to make one, it's a little inconvenient when I lack carpenting skills or anyone around me for that matter 🫠

That's good, I think alot of us feel the same way, it always feels like there's something missing when comparing to the empty hand arts where they have all, kata, techniques and sparring
