    Dojo "Arhat-Do". Kyiv, Ukraine.
    I am a Shotokan Karate coach and we also practice Iai-Do every Sunday. Sometimes I replace Sensei and teach Iai-Do. You made me think about this position before kiri. The box full of stars is open! I'll go look for information on the Internet about this. Thank you for your inquisitive mind. We must always have the Shoshin mind to learn new things!

    Dojo Ichi Ryu Kai, Hungary: Great observation and very important basis for learning! We didn't talk about this in the dojo. All movements are independent but synchronized with each other. For this reason, it is important that the correct starting (lauch) condition is recorded before cutting, from which all exercises can be performed safely. Of course, this is not really apparent in practiced execution, but it is a very important basis. It's as if you showed the root of a tree on which it rests! Thanks for it!

    Great observation!!! In my dojo, I'm taught to do all waza in one complete movement, from draw to cut. Any movement in two steps are no good. Although dese kata have the same kneel-beginning pose as you have mentioned in the video. I believe that in Iaido we train to adapt to situations, so our cuts have to be quick and efficient. In other way we don't stop in middle of the movement to judge. All movements have to be determined before action.

      Hey thanks for pointing out what I fail to mention! Yes in practice and reality we don't stop at that posture it's one smooth movement, and yes I have heard movements have to be determined and committed before action - that's a really good point.
      I guess the point I tried to bring up was- what if there's an unexpected reaction from the opponent...for example...inyoshintai, as we make the first sheath during zanshin, then the opponent comes for the second strike, would that be pre-determined or reactionary? What's your view on that? (Could be another video to explore in future)

    In what year in history did the sword carrying Samurai start to sit or kneel with the long sword still on the hip?

    • @doomedtolove9214
      @doomedtolove9214 3 месяца назад

      There isn't, Katana is like their secondary weapon. In fact when nobunaga got in touch with gunpowders he like it better than the sword. Even miyamoto musashi favorite weapon was a staff

      @@doomedtolove9214 I don't know about all that but from what I read; the long sword was not worn while kneeling or sitting down, these martial arts schools that claim to be traditional have included a lot of made-up stuff, to decorate the way of the sword. Like the action of flicking blood off of a sword when in reality it would be cleaned with a cloth, but I asked because maybe what I read is not true, maybe later Ronin sat around in seiza with swords at the ready for a duel, so I asked.

      I wish I have an accurate answer to that, didn't have enough concrete research on the subject manner.
      But yes iaido is a modern concept and wearing an uchikatana in seiza position is fairly modern idea too. What I do know, there was a sword student that brought in the seiza in iaido because he was practicing in an etiquette school. He brought the seiza into their style and it becomes what we are practicing today, hope it shed some light as how many modern ideas tend to be practiced now.
      It's not always a matter of "how it's used to be" more what new ideas and adaptations been introduced to the more newer styles
