I have seen the idea of winding an old spool with serger thread, but I haven't seen the bobbin gluing part - that's really helpful! I just recently found out (after sewing for 50-odd years) that how your spool pin on your machine is oriented dictates whether you should be using cross wound or standard up and down thread. If your spool pin is horizontal, then you are supposed to use cross wound thread (like Gutermann) so that it's coming off the top of the spool. If your spool pin is oriented vertically (like vintage machines), you are supposed to use standard thread that unwinds from the side of the spool. To use cross wound thread on a vertical spool pin machine, you should use a thread stand so that it unwinds from the top of the spool and then thread your machine. I can't wait to try this tip, I've got a spare empty spool and was going to try to figure out the best way to do this for using my serger thread on my vintage machines so they don't get twisted!
Interesting. Yeah I have read/heard lots of talk about how the thread comes off. I honestly don’t ever see it make a difference in the sewing. What is the reason? How does it help? What’s your experience with how it’s sewing differently?
That's awesome! It's always great to repurpose things instead of throwing them away. Your sewing friends will definitely appreciate your resourcefulness!
If I only have one cone of serging thread I hand wind some onto 3 regular thread reels to have four on the serger which takes ages, now I can do this, thanks!
Wow how cleaver. I can get some of that thread at the op shops I come across them so many times and never buy them.❤ I'll be getting some next time thanks Anastasia 😊
Thank you so much for your kind comment! I'm glad you found the video helpful and that it inspired you to try something new with the thread. Happy crafting!
New sub!! 👍 So clever! Especially when you use mostly white or black thread. I understand why specific colors aren't cheap, but white & black should be -- except they aren't! I bought cones of white & black to flesh out my stock and felt kinda stuck with them -- UNTIL NOW. Thank you! I tried 'stuffing' the cone to fit snugly on the thread spool, waste of time!!
Isn't it fun. I think it was from amazon or some cheap site like that. I just had to have it. I love a great sweater. I think it is a knock off of a Gucci sweater. Let me see if I can find it......I can't find the gucci one but here is one kinda like it on Amazon. www.amazon.com/Mansy-Leopard-Knitted-Pullover-Sweater/dp/B097GSQRWK/ref=asc_df_B097GRWC1V/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=693712782178&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11736374175125420509&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9197710&hvtargid=pla-1910212625644&mcid=644b5f72a27538f0a1d52b8ec72dd751&th=1&psc=1
It was my understanding that serger thread has fewer strands than regular sewing thread and would not be as durable for seams. Sergers use 2 3 or 4 threads to make a seam so don't need to be as strong.
My cone says "For Overlock Machines" so it seems to be the more delicate thread as you describe. :( I mostly make decor and practical items like GrowBags, totes, and table napkins, so I might be able to get away with cone thread. I guess I would NEVER rely on it for a pair of pants or shorts, or a fitted top. Thanks for your comment, you have saved me from an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction lol
I did the same. Great minds think alike. Also, I sell the spools. Transfer thread from large cone to small spools for Serger ruclips.net/video/nIIfeKCsugQ/видео.html

What a great idea. I'll never throw and empty spool away again. Maybe sewing friends will give me theirs if they don't want them.

I didn't think I needed this, but I do 😂
Well, sometimes life surprises us like that! Who knew you needed this until now? 😄

excellent idea!
Cool video, I will totally try it ❤
Woohoo 🥳
Yes! That IS a great sewing hack!
I know, right? It's like magic for your sewing projects!
Thank you! I ran into a great deal on thread BUT when they arrived they were the big spools!! LIFE AND MONEY SAVER!! ❤
Happy winding.

Happy winding. Thank you for watching.
I've never had trouble sewing directly from a standalone cone holder. They're only about $10, well worth the price if you go through a lot of thread.
Totally! I have a few of them but don't always have enough when students being in extra machines.
Thank you for sharing, God bless you always ❤
Thank you for watching :)
I just use a free standing large spool holder for the cones like they use on industrial machines.
Yeah that works too.
Thanks so much im going to do this this evening 🇨🇦🙏🙏🙏 brilliant 👏
Welcome.
Maybe its me but it seemed like this video was done as a voice over! Cool idea! Thanks!!!
Hummm maybe the timing was off. I will have to watch it again.
Love this trick!
Thank you for watching :)

I’m using regular thread. It’s just a big spool. I buy it wholesale for my industrial machines.
My cone says "For Overlock Machines" so it seems to be the more delicate thread as you describe. :(

Epic!
Right!!!? Thanks for watching today.
Wao, thanks❤
Welcome. :)
A cone holder costs six bucks. And sewing machines have a whole series of tensioners, so I question the “better results” theory.
Haha, who knew sewing machines could be so complicated? But hey, at least we have options, right?
Okay am I the only one that didnt know the bobin has to be a certain way up? 🤔.
On the viking machines the H has to be up. It is different on other machines.
@BBYDl1 Not so on Janome or Kenmore bobbins.
I did the same. Great minds think alike. Also, I sell the spools.
