  • In 1962, to prepare for a diplomatic trip he planned to take in 1964, President Kennedy asked his brother, Robert Kennedy, to travel to Japan. Watch RFK's oldest child, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, discuss her parents' historic visit with Dartmouth College Professor Jennifer Lind and Harvard Professor Emeritus Akira Iriye.
This event was co-sponsored by the Consulate-General of Japan in Boston.

There is also one more Waseda anecdote that people should know about. On Jan. 15, 1964, Robert and Ethel Kennedy returned to Waseda's Okuma Auditorium, just a couple of months after his brother died. Arthur Schlesinger poignantly describes the second visit in his book "Robert Kennedy and his Times":
"At what the American Embassy [in Tokyo] called 'the insistent urging of the students and faculty,' he returned to Waseda University, where students had raged at him only two years before. The auditorium was packed with an enthusiastic crowd. Thousands more, standing outside in a soft rain, listened over loudspeakers. He talked about his brother. 'He was not only president of one nation, he was president of young people around the world.' ... The crowd cheered wildly. Then he led the students in singing the Waseda song."
Imagining this sad epilogue to Robert Kennedy's history-changing performance at the school in 1962 never fails to move me deeply. I'm sure some of the same students who were protesting angrily two years ago were now just hanging their heads in sorrow with tears in their eyes.
