Nice clean look. Great utility knife. The hollow grind is a bit of a letdown. It would have been nice to have a steel pommel and hand guard so that it can be used for hammering stuff. Coldsteel is leaning a little too heavy on making their knives "combat" when we actually use them for cutting stuff around the house. It is nice enough for what it is.
I think you just summed it up perfectly. The 14 year old mall ninja in me, but the 40 year old man I am actually needs to use my tools. Thanks for your input! (I'm pinning this comment.)
They actually have models that are as you ask, and the hollow grind on this need not be a disappointment!!! My friend has had this knife for over 15 years and has utterly abused it!!! He's a police officer, and also works at knives plus and while he always has other knives, this is the one he abuses and calls his shit knife!!! Meaning he uses this knife for the shit jobs!!!
I love this knife for the history, this was issued to task force jawbreaker. Those were the first CIA operatives into Afghanistan after 911 in order to Facilitate operations with the northern alliance. One of these sits in the CIA museum in DC.
A good friend of mine served in Afghanistan with the Canadian special forces. The CSOR unit to be exact. He told me that most of the CIA paramilitary guys that he interacted with on a few occasions shared ideas and tactics with each other and they chose to carry this knife as their go-to fighting knife because when they used it in that fashion, it would always be in a stabbing scenario, not slashing. Taking out guards silently type of thing, because even silenced firearms still made too much noise in certain situations. And that's the reason for them choosing this knife. It's tanto tip is the strongest of all knife tips and won't chip off or break when it hits bone or some other hard material. And they said it's the perfect length fighting knife for taking out sentry's / humans. Too long is pointless and cumbersome. It's basically the perfect fighting knife. The only difference is they would carry one with a black blade and they would usually strap it to their plate carrier on their chest. And they could also easily conceal it if they were dressed as civilians due to it's compact design. So basically it is best used on the field of combat.
Totally disagree. Navy Seals get the SRK after training. That knife wouldn’t even be in my top 10 if I had a choice. They’re cheap and easy to replace. The military spends money on tech, not knives. I come from a military family and have only ever met one person in my life that’s used a knife in combat… which was a ka-bar- another knife I wouldn’t pick. Appreciate you joining the discussion. 🍻
Excellent points! I did have a problem cutting my pinky off cleanly though, as the aus8 steeel, hollow grind, and thin handle made performance and edge alignment a little tricky, but in the end, she popped right off. Thanks for sounding off!
@@5MinuteKnives I have, I think, 3 of these. I'm aware it's absolutely a stabby-stabby tool, NOT a "Survival Do-Everything" knife, any more than a stiletto is... Long as nobody gets delusional, is all good. ;)
I would have to say this much. Aside for the sheath and the clip design. I can see quite a bit of use for this tanto outside of combat purposes. This tanto has a belly which is good for slicing. Fits very well concealed inside a waistband or belt. Very fast in hand, And very light for a 5 1/2 inch blade. I decided to replace mine and ordered one to carry for EDC.
Glad you found your reasons tonight incorporate this one into your rotation. I have knives that do everything better that I would use this for, so it didn’t connect with me.
What do you mainly use it for? I have too many options I would go for instead that do each task better with both geometry, legality, and steel choices.
I love those cheap tantos by Cold Steel. My Recon Tanto is my "trash" knife, it's full a chips, dents and battle scars from the war on backyard junk. SK-5 is so easy to reprofile and to sharpen, it's really good to learn sharpening skills on different tools. I also use it to practice metal engraving (with very poor results haha). Now it's the equivalent of lil' uzi's face of the knife world. Great review by the way and greetings from Belgium.
Thank you and well put! I have been selling a lot more sheaths for the srk and recon tanto lately. I love the cheapo sk-5 versions too. I'm even considering upgrading like the designs so much. This one was just a lil too think for any real use but that's a great thing about engraving. I just picked up an ortur laser engraver for adding logos to my sheaths but haven't tried engraving metal yet. Thanks for the idea! Happy holidays!
Thanks for the review. I like that you talked about some odds and ends that other people seem not to have mentioned. Namely, the amount of play (none) once it's in the sheath, the pressure required to release the knife, and the presence of the sharpening choil. Appreciate the honest opinion!
I love cold steel knives. I just got a lynn thompson signiture kobun, in s35vn, and a Saber tip. Kinda like a outdoorsman profile blade. And he signed the box with a sharpie. I love it!! Hair popping sharp.
And yes about the little pouch on the side my SOG seal pup has a pouch like that I love it because there’s just enough room for a fire starter stone and a sharpening stone and it’s secured tightly with a snap. So my little set up would be perfect for a survival knife

"Fun knife"? It's definitely not a utility knife. Potentially it is an excellent self defense belt knife. Except, it needs a larger reinforced guard - hit a belt buckle, thick belt or other harder obstruction and you might partially sever your four fingers. It is not a boot knife - too long. As a belt knife it needs a belt attachment that won't slip over and off the belt. As is, you will pull the sheath out with the knife. Better would be a strong j hook or sharply back-angled metal clip. I'm surprised Cold Steel used such a slippery clip on the sheath
That's true about the clip. it was designed to go in an 8" boot btw... Not bragging, but I have 30+ years in martial arts with a lot of that dedicated to the sword and blade training of all kinds. I would never consider something with such a thin handle for self defense for edge alingment reasons. (The same reason most people can't hit with a single stack 9mm handgun for example.) Also, this wouldn't be legal to carry in mist states concealed, so your adversary would already know it was on you before the fight starts. (Strike two for me.) Finally, it isn't full tang, so when the rubber grip starts to get worn in, you can feel the thing move aorund in there (I've had 3 of these now). Finally, if you were to bring this into combat on your armor for example, it would be a little on the short side, the hollow grind and steel choice would make it terrible for feild use if you got stranded or needed to build a makeshift shelter. Also you mentions the flimsy, rubber guard. Not great when you hit something hard like armor or bone. It's fun to carry around the house for letter and box opening, but other than that, I wouldn't use it for anything. I'm giving another fo these away on my subscribestar soon if you love it so much. I don't but good luck! 🍻
I agree with almost everything you say. I happen to live in a jurisdiction where you can carry anything, any length - even switchblades - as long as it doesn't have a knuckleduster type guard. Bayonets, swords machetes ok too. Don't recall offhand, but I think the steel is AUS 8. While this steel doesn't have fantastic corrosion resistance, or edge retention, it is not brittle, and easy to sharpen. This to me is a good concealable defense knife for the price. As you point out, it has a skinny handle, and I would have thinkened the handle (and I font have large hands) as well as enlarged the guard. I have two serrated models. The Cold Steel serrated blades as delivered will cut like blazes. I would never use them for "cutting chores", I have utility pocket knives for that. But the Kubon is a "ready to go" if needed. Like all self defense weapons you must adjust your mental conditioning according to what you have on you. Like carrying a single action pistol as opposed to a double action revolver. In this case number one is ensure a super tight grip.
Great review !! Kobun is, with no doubt, excellent knife choice (I own one), but what I really want to know is the name and manufacturer of those nice gloves you have. Is it possible to send me more info? Thanks.

The clip on the kobun is hot garbage. I ended up taking mine off completely as it does not provide enough force to keep the knife anywhere. You yank the handle to deploy the knife and the whole sheath comes with it. As a result, I have taken to tying the tip of the sheath to my belt with the grommets there, and then just stuffing it down the front of my pants. When I yank the handle out, the sheath comes out and then yanks free because it's attached to my belt. Whacks me in the dick sometimes, but that's the price you pay.
My main issue was steel choice, handle felt flimsy and was too thin for good edge geometry, and that crappy rubber cross guard that doesn’t like kydex (since the sheath dulls the blade).
Agreed. I liked it. The handle was a lil thin for edge alignment (for me) I wasn't impressed with the steel and the sheath was fixed in one way. Oh and I don't generally go for hollow grinds but I agree with you that it's mainly for one thing. I did like it, I just couldn't figure out what to do with that (and all my tactical systems already have higher budget knives in em). Appreciate you tunin in! New giveaway coming soon!

lol noper. I only see it being useful for the one thing.... Def need a backup throughout the day. Thanks for tuning in Vin! 👍
I think its more of a budget collector "fun" item rather than a use everyday knife. Alot worse ways to rid yourself of 40 bucks.
💯💯💯💯
The Kobun is designed to be a back up weapon.....last ditch before you use your fists.
Well put! I didn't look at it like that but it makes total sense. Thanks for stopping by!
Damn that costed me 80$ 💀
Like it alot.Can I have it ?
Sure!
“Right right right” 🤣
Good giveaway idea
Maybe it can be used to go running 🏃♂️ - I live in Latin America dude - it's a light knife
Make it fun. Sign me up.
It is a good give-away, specially if you'd considering giving it to me. :)
lol I already gave this one away one, but someone just sent another in to use in a giveaway, so there's one more coming. (Also some sweet giveaways on our Subscribestar) Thanks for stopping by!
this is my edc, i never use knives for utility i dont want people to know im packin, if a knife is needed and we dont have one, it doesn't get opened or cut.
All depends on the laws in your area. I would say due to the thinness of the sheath, it is fun to carry around the house. :)
@@5MinuteKnives indeed, im being kind of harsh, ill have another knife for utility.
@@Konstantinos340 good to go Bro, opsec Is your friend.
I WANT IT AS A GIVE AWAY PRETTY PRETTY PKEASE 😭😭😭
This is a really old giveawy so this one was gone a long time ago BUT I'm giving another one away on our subscribestar soon. check it out. 👍
@@5MinuteKnives I shall
I does not do anything ! it is a tool ! the user is the doer !
it could be no shorter on function than any other knife that size !
I see so many knife reviews where the reviewer says a knife can not chop or whatever function , when the knife will do just fine and it is the reviewer that does not have the skill to use the tool effectively !
. . . and you wouldn't believe how many dumb comments I see from weirdos with no channels of their own who don't seem to understand blade geometry, steel, heat treating, or why a 5 ounce, hollow ground tanto might not be the most practical tool for an outdoors guy with about 60 fixed blades and knife review channel. Sorry I insulted your girlfriend. Now go make your own channel, there genius. (easy on the exclamation marks too. Do you just scream everything all the time? PLease make videos of you talking then.)
I wear really tall leather submariner boots and the Kobun fits perfectly inside of it. It's exceptionally flat which makes it quite comfortable.
Self defense concealed carry iwb
It is legal in a lot of States, so be careful with that.
9; 23 minutes that i will never get back
That's what you get for looking up old youtube videos instead of doing something productive in the real world. Add your stupid comment and the time you took to read this as well. Thanks for the bump in the algorithm sucka! (Burps 10 minutes of your life) 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Cuts things.
🤣🤣
it is a weapon
Is it??!
It's pronounced coeboon
But are you sure?
@@5MinuteKnives Japanese person here. actually, it’s “CO-BOON” We forget that Lynn Thompson is somewhat of a Weeb/Weaboo* and therefore, he would mispronounce/lazily label a Japanese-inspired product.
Furthermore, for some reason, Lynn can’t stop making Overpriced -OR- Sub Par quality Japanese products.
Hope I helped! 👌
*Weeaboo is a mostly derogatory slang term for a Western person who is obsessed with Japanese culture, especially anime, often regarding it as superior to all other cultures.)
@@Callsign_Kishin Right?????? 550 for the long handle wak??! Also, I'm a bit of a weeb meeseff. (Iajutsu student when I was a young guy, huge anime fan, life-long martial artist.) That's not to say I know how to say Ko-booon or will ever get it right. I think I said it again in my new vid (when I picked on Lynn Thompson's sneakers). Haha, anyway, you're awesome and thanks for the comment!
@@5MinuteKnives nah man you’re good! Wanting to study an Asian Discipline is respect and appreciation for their culture. But doing what Lynn does? Taking designs from another culture, making your own products, misnaming them and selling them for way too much? Cringe. Also: white sneakers. 😂
@@Callsign_Kishin For sure. I pick on the mall ninja side a lot myself but admittedly, I will always be one. 🤣 You seem alright though. Stick around. 👍
I subbed gimme a knife please
🤣🤣🤣🤣
