I wouldn't call the recon tanto a survival knife. But it is a monster. I remember them using it to stab a metal truck hood and 55 gallon drums over and over and it didn't break. But the shape doesn't naturally lend itself to survival. I'd recommend something like the Gerber StrongArm instead.
Agree, own the carbon v recon tanto going on 30 years now and this video is a testament to its durability even though its intended use is combat. I do believe the old owner stated he wanted to ensure the soldiers had an affordable option with no compromises. For survival, Id go with the CS Survivalist or for half the price a CS Black Bear Bowie. I'm eying the CS Republic Bushcraft as it is made in USA to match my carbon v recon tanto that price is hard to convince so I have to find something that cost more for her she wants.
To some extent, you shot an ASMR video with this knife (in a good way). It was nice to see, even though I've been familiar with this knife for a long time, and I know about its capabilities)
Yeah but his only purpose is to f*ck all knives into oblivion.😅 I am not talking about hating him for that, as any other "bushcrafter" (god I hate this name), I do like somr sort of hardcore testing so I do not bux a complete gobshitte. Not that it is bad but for 90% average knife guys that use it on their average woodcraft/outdoor adventure or while doing normal backpacking it can be a little too extensive. You know JoeX said that the knife was average cause he broke it (on purpose) but come on...for such a small amount of money the knife held up like a beast😅.
@@vandrakpita Actually the knife shattered rather early in JoeX's testing. Any knife can be broken. When a knife is tested to destruction, the litmus test is the longevity it can endure stress before breaking.
@@Man_Cave Yeah the tip or I think 3,5cm broke in the beggining, why? Well even tho I like his content I must say because he was hitting a STEEL pipe like a freaking APE. :D But again he is the knife destruction testing guy sooo...I like to see what it can endure, I for instance know I would never do even 10% of the things he does to the knives he is "testing". Because lets be real, who will do this stuff to his blade? On daily basis? I guess even SpecOps operators do not smash bricks, pipes and punch holes into steel.
@@vandrakpita Breaking the knife is a foregone conclusion with JoeX. I would rather watch him break his knife than mine. In this way, I know what I have. In this particular instance, there is a chance the temper was not done properly. When a knife shatters, rather than bending before breaking, it indicates the temper is too hard.
@@Man_Cave Yes that is indeed true. Also yeah it could be an issue in tempering or otherwise heattreating the blade. Making a knife is not as easy as someone would think, and I have had my fair share of broken and shattered blades because, lets be real, what 18 year old would care about learning something at the school forge :D . Now I know aaand well I f*cked a shit ton of material for no reason...the older you get I guess.
Ive had a recon tanto for over 30 years. Its taken all of the abuse an outdoorsman can give it and i never had a problem. I even let my idiot buddy hit it repeatedly with a 16 ounce hammer and it didn't break.a carbon 5 recon tanto is a bulletproof knife,i don't think ill ever need a new one.
This knife is a thing of beauty and very functional. I especially like the "blue steel" finish. Thanks for sharing.
Expert testing!! Every single test showed me something I needed to know, thanks.

The CS recon tanto is a much better knife than the strongarm is in terms of quality and especially price to quality ratio.

Agree, I'd reach for the Strongarm, even the Temu fakes are great knives.
Picture speaks a thousand words, enough said!

CS’s high quality sk5 and high quality heat-treatment procedures🎉
You need to view JoeX's review of this knife. It can be broken!
